The Final Fury (VOY)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Star Trek Novels: Invasion: The Final Fury (VOY)

I am SO ANGRY about this book!! I gave it a 5 out
of 10. This was an excellant series idea by Diane Carey and this is the way that it's finished! This book sucked! I mean why the hell didn't the furies use force fields instead of wooden doors that escaping Voyager crew could just
run through.

By Matthew Patterson on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 - 8:52 pm:

That. Was. The. POINT!!!!! THe whole thing about the Furies was that they had a mix of old and new tech! It was really a wonderful plot twist to see the Voyager people stymied by regular old superdense metal bars. And it was great to see B'Elanna baffled by technology that she could have easily gotten around, if it were only three cubic miles smaller! I always love Dafyyd ab Hugh's work. I'm not sure why, though. They always seem to have the perfect blend of comedy, drama, and good characterization.

Are you taking emphasis lessons from William Shatner? ; )

By Bullet on Saturday, June 10, 2000 - 11:29 pm:

This was the worst of the novels, but not because of what Alfonso Turnage says. I think that they could have expanded it a bit more. Also, if you've been watching Voyager for the last 6 seasons, the characterization of the crew seems odd. Like, you would never hear Janeway say or do the things she does here. Perhaps, because this was written in '96 when the series was just beginning. But it doesn't FEEL like the Voyager crew. The characters aren't really INTO it at this point. Also, no one really calls Tom "Paris" as often here...

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, June 10, 2000 - 11:37 pm:

So? I think the series might have been a bit more interesting if they'd picked up on a few of these characterizations.

By Harvey Kitzman on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 - 6:50 pm:

I also think that some of the characterizations are way off.

2 nits: At one point Kes is spelled Kess, and a reference is made to Tuvok having 2 hearts. Vulcans have only 1 heart.

One nice thing: the book mentioned Okudagrams. This is the joking name for the display panels on the ships that were created by Michael and Denise Okuda.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 - 7:37 pm:

Like which characterizations?

By Bullet on Friday, June 30, 2000 - 9:43 pm:

Well, you have to understand that this book was written in 1995, just when Voyager came out. I don't think Janeway is properly characterized (well, you can say that about her on the actual TV series)

I do think that some of them are better, though..

Kes is out of character, she seems too emotional (about Voyager's decision on dealing with the Fury threat)

The interaction between Tom and Harry is very different...almost as if they weren't really friends..

(After being pointed to this board by ScottN) - here's a nit. This book's what, first/second season? (Doc is sans holoemitter, Harry calls Tom 'Paris' like he did in the early eps).

So why does B'Elanna say to Paris in chapter 11 - "Well, lover, been nice knowing you", even though Paris doesn't start making moves on her till the 3rd season, and she doesn't admit she loves him till the 4th?

By Klingon Warrior on Thursday, May 02, 2002 - 11:09 am:

Another nit:
After Paris does the Swoop of Death, he and Kim black out as a result of pulling high g. When they wake up, they both experience a blinding pain for a second.

However, in real life, when a person wakes up after losing consciousness from pulling g, they don't experience any pain of this kind at all. (I consulted an ex-fighter pilot on this).

Matthew,

Sorry about the 4 year delay... Haven't looked on this board much.

Bullet stated it well. The characters were not acting like we expected them to. Paris-Kim, Kes, etc. It is very obvious that this novel was written well before the actors established their character's personalities.

a reference is made to Tuvok having 2 hearts. Vulcans have only 1 heart.

Someone clearly confused Vulcans with Time Lords!
