Soldiers of Fear (TNG)

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Star Trek Novels: Invasion: Soldiers of Fear (TNG)

Anyone care to venture a guess as to when this series (the 24th century parts) take place? The cover clearly show Picard and Riker in the TNG uniforms. Yet, the DS9 book shows Sisko as he appeared between "Explorers" and "The Adversary". And of course, only a samll period of time occurs between the TNG book and the Voyager one.

I find often that the covers don't always correspond exactly to when the book may take place, espec with the early Star Trek novels with the covers done by Boris Vallejo. He'd have a cover with Kirk or someone in the red and white tunic and black pants but the book may take place during the original series run, give or take. Certainly before the change to the next outfit, which are my favorites of them all. I'm not sure why but they look nicer. Better protection against the cold, too, I'd imagine.

I thought this was the third best book of the series. I gave it an 8 out of 10.

I very much enjoyed the series. I don't know how these people kept the continuity going, but I didn't feel the same about the horned creatures in book 2 as in book 1. In book 1 Kirk seemed to be able to deal with their looks but it was almost impossible for the TNG crew. I suppose that during the intervening years the aliens used their prior experience to develop that "ray" to inspire fear but it wasn't explained well enough to let me suspend my disbelief on that point.

Did anyone else notice that in "First Strike" the Furies called themselves "the Unclean" but, in this novel, the citizens of the Federation are the ones now called "the Unclean"? What gives?

I don't think the Furies ever called themselves the Unclean though. This book was the easiest one to read. Quick and straight forward. Although I didn't really like Redbay much. And yeah, I agree about that ray thing and how Picard's crew can't really deal with it.

Travis - At the end of First Strike, the Furies said something to the effect of "We aren't the Unclean anymore - you are."

Owen: Yeah, that's right. I finished that book last week. I had this series onmy bookshelf for about 6 years, but I FINALLY got to them. Next up? Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising! Yeah, I know, I'm slow. *shrugs*

Geordi has his VISOR in this story, so that puts it at least up to the time of Generations.
