Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Star Trek Novels: New Frontier: House of Cards

All right, I guess I'll break the ice here.

First off, Peter David is my all-time favorite author. It took me a while to decide to dive into this new series (somehow, I missed it until long after the first six had been published and I didn't know if I wanted to spend the money to buy them all), but *I like it*.

Nits, and this is such an interesting venture for the nitpicker's guild...

First: Just a question. Did we ever find out Shelby's middle name (Paula) in NG?

Second: Re: the laser stitchy-weldy thing. OWWWWWWWWW. And I repeat: OWWWWWWWWWW. That must be one darned fine tool; I imagine it would have been hard for him to avoid slicing his eye apart!

Hoping for more comments here...AFC

I love Peter David's books too, but I couldn't really find any nits. :-o

An interesting note: Using these stories we can "prove" that NG books 47-49 (a trilogy about Q) actually happened. In both 48 and 49, Crusher mentions Selar transfered to the Excalibur, where she ends up in this series. True, it isn't positive, but it was worth noting.

BTW, this is a great series.

47, huh? GR&D (everyone's getting a little tired of this, I know...)

Actually, we didn't even get a FIRST NAME for Shelby in Best of Both Worlds. We only knew her as Lt. Commander Shelby. PD invented a first and middle name for her (of course, the actresses first name IS Elizabeth...)

I FINALLY got around to reading Books 1-4 in the Hardcover colelcter's omnibus, and I must say it was awesome. Just to tell you how awesome, it took me only about 3 days to finish.

At last! A board dedicated to my current favourite incarnation of Star Trek, New Frontier! :)
Peter David is indeed awesome, I think by far the best Star Trek writer out there, and certainly my favourite. It's been months since I've read a non-Davidian Star Trek novel.
You know what the thing about the New Frontier series is? It doesn't much bother with all the 'by the 24th century, humans will have evolved and things are bright and cheery' stuff, which is an improvement. Not that I didn't love TNG, mind you.
I completely agree with the Chief Nitpicker about the laser welding thing. That's one thing about Peter David: in almost all of his books (and especially the New Frontier books) there will be something that's hard for me personally to read, due to its unpleasantness.

Re Shelby: Ron D. Moore admitted he goofed when he dropped a reference to her in DS9, after he'd promised John Ordover(sp?) he'd let her alone for the novels' sake. He sheepishly tried to explain it away by saying there were perhaps two Shelbys. NANJAO.

I just purchased the first four books in omnibus form and I am excited. I wasn't super-into the ST novels until somewhat recently, blasphemy I know, but I'm looking forward to this series. Hopefully I can still find most of the novels fairly easily/cheaply if I end up enjoying it as much as everyone here does.
