According to the previews there was an Earth colony that disappeared. Ummmm, here in the area that even the Vulcans didn't bother exploring & some people decided to go set up a colony. Okaaaaaaay, NNAN, but how could they be certain they would even find a habitable planet? It seems to me that usually explorers go first & then colonists head out when they have a general idea of what's out there. (Not that colonists don't discover things explorers missed, but if these colonists headed out blind then they were very foolish.)

Ok, judging from the pictures on at The Offical StarTrek website, this looks to be a Malcom Reed character building episode :) He is my favorite character right now, so this is good news to me!
