Berman blames too much Trek for cancellation

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Enterprise: Enterprise Kitchen Sink: Berman blames too much Trek for cancellation
By Harvey Kitzman on Thursday, March 03, 2005 - 10:08 pm:

Berman is citing overkill. Maybe the lack of continuity in the first three seasons is more like it.

I am glad he realized that the Voyager episode Threshold is a terrible episode. There may be hope for him yet.

Hopefully he and Braga will leave the franchise.

By Harvey Kitzman on Thursday, March 03, 2005 - 10:09 pm:

Shoot, meant to say Braga. The same thoughts hold true though.

By Influx on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 8:55 am:

He joked taht Next Gen characters seemed to be taking Adult Education courses to better themselves, confessing that he wasn't really sure how the economy worked in a future without money.

Yeah, perhaps you should have examined the premise of your series before beginning to write it, hmm?

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 10:16 am:

No offense, guys, but couldn't this have been placed on the board initially created to announce the cancellation? Do we need a new board for every single news story or post made in reference to the cancellation or the finale?

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 10:20 am:

Interesting that Berman states in the story, "After 18 straight years on the air and 750-some episodes, the current run of Star Trek is over." Interesting, since, with These Are the Voyages, the total number of episodes will number about 692 (or 700 if you count two-eps as two eps), not "750-something."

By Influx on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 10:37 am:

Yeah, I didn't know if it was a new Anonyx board or what...

By Josh M on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 12:22 pm:

Influx: Yeah, perhaps you should have examined the premise of your series before beginning to write it, hmm?
Didn't all of that start way back in Star Trek IV, though?

Luigi Novi: Interesting that Berman states in the story, "After 18 straight years on the air and 750-some episodes, the current run of Star Trek is over." Yeah, the article mentioned that. And wasn't it Braga that made that comment?

By Harvey Kitzman on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 1:43 pm:

Luigi,

I posted it on a different discussion to point out that the Killer B's really have no clue as to reality. It wasn't overkill that cancelled Enterprise - it was bad writing and a bad series premise.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 1:51 pm:

Why could this not be pointed out on the other boards for the general topic? :)

And Josh, what in Star Trek IV were you referring to?

And thanks for the correction, as it was indeed Braga, not Berman.

By NSetzer (Nsetzer) on Friday, March 04, 2005 - 3:23 pm:

From "The Voyage Home":

Waiter: Who gets the bad news...?
Gillian: Don't tell me: they don't have money in the 23rd Century
Kirk: Well, we don't

By Harvey Kitzman on Sunday, March 06, 2005 - 8:53 pm:

The Killer B's need to go. Give the franchise to Coto.

By LUIGI NOVI on Monday, March 07, 2005 - 2:00 am:

In any case, overkill might've been a viable excuse during the year when we had DS9 and Voyager on the air, and Generations in theaters, since that's three different Trek's being produced. But now there was just one show on the air, and the last movie was a few years ago, which was a few years after the previous one had been made. So where's the overkill? Or did he simply mean having so many continuous seasons of Trek? If so, perhaps he should've listened to all those people who thought the franchise needed a rest after Voyager?

By John A. Lang on Monday, March 07, 2005 - 1:51 pm:

RE: Harvey Kitzman: The Killer "B"'s need to go. AMEN!

But give the franchise to >ME< so I can do "Star Trek: Aphrodite". I'd hire Bjo Trimble as my Executive Consultant.

By ScottN on Monday, March 07, 2005 - 3:47 pm:

And Marina Sirtis as the Captain? :O

By John A. Lang on Monday, March 07, 2005 - 5:40 pm:

That's a thought. Thanx!

By Rene on Monday, March 07, 2005 - 7:42 pm:

What's so special about Bjo Trimble. She's a has been from the 60's who keep milking her so called "fame" long after her 15 minutes were up.

By Influx on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 6:20 am:

And Marina Sirtis as the Captain?

If she is the Captain, the ship won't make it through the first show...

By Captain Deanna Troi on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 7:27 am:

I'm sorry, what's a core breach again? *BOOM!*

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 7:34 am:

RE: Influx: That'll be Deanna Troi's "challenge". It'll be her first command. And along with other first year Academy graduates, they will work together to get the ship home....despite the odds.

Also, there will be alien women...an Andorian, a Klingon, a Vulcan, and even a Romulan! (She'll be there as a sign of "good faith" to the Romulan Empire to signify the completion of the reunification between Vulcan & Romulus)

By Thande on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 7:48 am:

Apart from John's female slant, it sounds a lot like an idea for a new Trek series I saw on the interweb a while back, set about 50 yrs post-DS9 and exploring a bridge crew including new Federation members from formerly hostile races such as the Cardassians and Klingons.

By Harvey Kitzman on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 10:15 am:

John, I think your all female show would be great!

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 10:29 am:

Here's the working plot: (as of now)

The reunification of Vulcan & Romulus is complete. The Neutral Zone is gone. The Beta Quadrant is now open for exploration. Deanna Troi & Will Riker have separated over Troi's frequent vists from Mr. Barclay. (Riker thinks she's cheating on him) Troi requests tranfer to the Aphrodite as First Officer. After the launch from Dry Dock, the Captain (a male) goes below decks to his bachelor party...leaving Troi in command....with a bunch of first year Academy students on the Bridge....most of them aliens. Suddenly, an explosion occurs below decks. The explosion opens a wormhole into an unexplored area of the Beta Quadrant...leaving the ship "dead in space". The explosion ripped a large section of the hull...where the men were gathered for the bachelor party. Troi assumes command and orders an investigation into the explosion. After the investigation is complete, it turns out that someone from the Tal Shiar had planted a bomb in the room where the men were gathered. (The Tal Shiar is under Sela's command now) With only life support, artifical gravity, short range communications & thrusters working, Troi must find a way to get the ship back to the Alpha Quadrant by allying herself with the aliens of the Beta Quadrant & utilizing their technology to repair the ship.

(BTW---This idea is in the process of being copyrighted...only a matter of days now)

By The Undesirable Element on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 3:17 pm:

What's your reason for the all-female cast aside from the novelty of the situation?

And what are you planning to do with this idea that you need it copyrighted? Novel? Short Stories? Web-series?

TUE

"Is this a ship of the Valkyries, or have you human women finally done away with your men altogether?"

By Harvey Kitzman on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 4:09 pm:

TUE,

For ratings of course. You want the male demographic to watch? Make it an all female crew.

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, March 08, 2005 - 7:52 pm:

The all-female cast serves a dual purpose:

Your first assumption is correct....I want the male demographic to watch AND the novelty of the idea is appealing.

The second reason is to appeal to the WOMEN demographic as well. To show the young women who watch that they can do the same things that men can...like take command, fix things, get things done, solve problems, etc without a man's help. (Sort of N.O.W. in space.)

The series will be a combination of:
Star Trek
Xena.......and
Charlie's Angels

all rolled into one.

The female cast will be resourceful, smart, beautiful, and strong. They will be seductive, yet still kick alien butt!

They will not be kicked around, yet they will not forget that they are women and need an occasional hug once in awhile from a man that's passing by their way!

I'm speculating that with my "new angle" to Star Trek, the ratings from both demographics could be very high.

I wish to get the copyrights for my ideas...just in case the idea is rejected...then they can't use it...without my permission!

By Influx on Wednesday, March 09, 2005 - 8:22 am:

There's another male demographic, who would be watching just to see what everyone is wearing that year... ;)

By Influx on Wednesday, March 09, 2005 - 8:25 am:

BTW, John... Putting a ©, your name, and the year might suffice on a web page, as may explicitly stating your copyright.

By Harvey Kitzman on Wednesday, March 09, 2005 - 4:11 pm:

John,

Just make sure there are plenty of Seven of Nine catsuits around.

By Thande on Wednesday, March 09, 2005 - 4:19 pm:

Strikes me that the Bs might be amenable to John's idea, if he also promised to write 56 time travel episodes per season...

By John A. Lang on Thursday, March 10, 2005 - 7:56 am:

I'm pleased to announce that there will be NO "time travel" episodes in "Aphrodite". Those stories are "out of gas"

By K Kounter on Thursday, March 10, 2005 - 8:40 am:

John- I d rather put Captain Janice Rand as the ship s captain lol, ubba ubba

By John A. Lang on Thursday, March 10, 2005 - 10:13 am:

Janice Rand is "scheduled" to appear on "Aphrodite"..if / when it is accepted

By Harvey Kitzman on Thursday, March 10, 2005 - 5:05 pm:

As long as she has the beehive! Yes!

By Harvey Kitzman on Monday, March 14, 2005 - 4:47 pm:

New series by Braga:

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=30595

I don't know about you guys but I will be sure to skip this series.

How did this moron ever get Jeri Ryan?

By John A. Lang on Monday, March 14, 2005 - 7:24 pm:

With him gone, that just leaves my series (ST: Aphrodite) as a hopeful legitamate contender for the next "TREK" series. WOOT!

BTW...I mailed my idea to a representative of the WGA yesterday. They should get it before the end of the week.

By Josh Gould (Jgould) on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - 5:49 am:

A series called "Threshold"? Is Braga deliberately referencing the awful Voyager episode of the same name? ;)

By Influx on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - 6:31 am:

Maybe he'll find that without the built-in base of the already established universe of the Star Trek franchise (and the fans to go with it), that he really is a lousy writer.

By ScottN on Friday, April 01, 2005 - 3:49 pm:

Enterprise saved with strings attached?

Happy 1 April, everyone.

By adam on Friday, April 01, 2005 - 10:40 pm:

"Braga will oversee the pilot, which examines the international fallout of an alien invasion."

Excellent. Not content hijacking and destroying only one of "The Great Bird's" ideas, he's moved on to Earth: Final Conflict.
Hey Braga, the lowest level of Hell is reserved to those that betray friends and benefactors for personal gain. Take a ski-jacket, its a little cold where you're going.

By Harvey Kitzman on Friday, April 29, 2005 - 11:00 pm:

Berman is still an idiot!

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?id=30935

I love this sentence: "As far as the next iteration of Star Trek goes, as to whether we'll have anything to do with it, I think it's way too early to tell."

If there is any justice, he won't! Moron!!!!

By brent on Wednesday, May 25, 2005 - 7:00 pm:

It's pretty ridiculous to talk about Trek needing a rest because of Trek "overkill", when we still have novels, video games, role play games, stage productions, Las Vegas extravaganzas, reference books, nagazines, interviews, biographies, web sites, fan-produced stories and films, newspaper articles, TV interviews, to keep us occupied. If Berman and Braga think there's too much Trek, what do they think of all that stuff I listed?

By Will on Thursday, May 26, 2005 - 10:21 am:

Not to mention reruns of all five series, weekly conventions, model kits, and DVDs.
we reached the point of overkill YEARS ago and most fans LIKED it! We've always wanted more, and Paramount was always obliged to give it to us. Why stop now?

By elwood on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 9:09 am:

I hope B&B find a job in a very good series
and work there for the rest of their natural lives
because I don't want them to ever have a finger in Trek.

By Josh M on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 - 1:22 pm:

Braga already has "Threshold". I don't know about Berman.
