Star Trek soundtracks

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Movie Music: Star Trek soundtracks

Who's got any or all ST soundtracks and what do ya think of 'em?

I have a couple of sets of TOS music, one's even all actual sound effects from it.

By Spornan on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 9:33 am:

I have (had, since it got lost. :( ) a "Best of" Trek CD a while back that featured each series' opening theme, and a few pieces from individual episodes. From memory, I think they were "The Trouble with Tribbles" "Heart of Glory" "Inner Light" "The Visitor" And that's all I remember.

The best part of the whole CD were the themes, the DS9 must have been a special version or something, because it sounded great, with a lot more bass.

By Sven of Nine on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 9:44 am:

Yeah, the so-called "super-duper" season 4 DS9 theme, which Dennis McCarthy apparently thought was too fast and reduced the majesty of the original, but I think it's great.

There was also a single version of the original DS9 theme, which might have been re-recorded instead of sampled (they made a c*ck-up of the middle section of the theme, with the brass etc.) and featured slow-rock guitars and everything.

It was bizarre. And it's on the "Emissary" soundtrack.

I've got ST III. I've been wanting to play "Stealing the Enterprise", my favorite cut on the soundtrack. I used to have all the movies soundtracks up to Generations. I plan to eventually regain all of them.

I've got the same Best of Trek suite that Spornan has. It also had music from Voyager's "Heroes and Demons." I always liked the first track of the Heart of Glory music. All that percussion... woo!

By MarkN on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 6:49 pm:

My ST CDs are Star Trek Sound Effects, The Best of Star Trek 30th Anniversary Special! and the 3CD collector's set of Volume One: The Cage/Where No Man Has Gone Before, Volume Two: The Doomsday Machine/Amok Time and Volume Three: Shore Leave/The Naked Time}.

Oops! Messed up with the formatting above. Oh, well, silly me. I used to have STII:TWoK's soundtrack on cassette, but I'm not sure if I still do or not. It was the first ST soundtrack I'd ever bought.

By JAM on Monday, June 04, 2001 - 6:14 pm:

My favorite soundtracks:

1. Star Trek IV. Whatta great score. The intro music is bright and uplifting, matches the tone of the movie well.

2. ST:TMP. A great soundtrack, has the score that made TNG famous, and some well-done Klingon themed music.

3. Star Trek: Generations. The great bonus to this CD is the movie effects tracks at the end, with a sampling of warp effects, cloaking, to bridge background noise from both 1701-B and 1701-D.

4. Ditto on the 30th anniversary special mentioned above. Themes from every show to date, and the signature music from "Inner Light".

5. ST:II. I liked this one, but I have not heard the ST:III soundtrack. Can anyone tell me if the music is the same between these two movies, or the soundtracks are mostly different.

Its a shame Leonard Rosenman never returned to score another Trek film. Messrs. Rosenman and Goldsmith (ST-TMP) both had their scores nominated for Oscars, and both pics have the two best Trek scores.

By Mark Swinton on Thursday, September 06, 2001 - 11:42 am:

I've said this before on the film's own board, and I believe it's worth saying again here. Whatever one might think of Star Trek V, it is certainly redeemed by the score. Every time I hear it, the orchestration (clearly a very large and very proficient orchestra was involved) unfailingly sends shivers down my spine.

Has anyone got the 20th Anniversary Soundtrack from ST:TMP?

By Benn on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 12:01 am:

Not yet. But I've been wanting to get it. I haven't heard Inside STAR TREK in years and would love to hear it.

By ScottN on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 9:37 am:

I asked my kids for it for my birthday (coming up next month), seeing as it will be my last birthday ever (I'm not going to turn 40 next year... I'll just stop having birthdays!).

I just got a CD, I think it's "Ultimate Star Trek" (?) with the main themes for each movie and each series. For me, the best main theme (hands down) is ST:FC. I get chills everytime I hear it.

By Derf on Friday, September 07, 2001 - 2:45 pm:

I own that CD myself ... I tend to agree with you. Yet I always also find myself replaying the theme for DS9 over and over ...

Strangely enough, it's often regarded as the worst Trek score by many film music fans. I don't necessarily agree, though :)

Has anyone got the 20th Anniversary Soundtrack from ST:TMP?

I've had it for some time now; highly recommended.

I LOVE the Star Trek First Contact score. Hauntingly beautiful.

By Merat on Sunday, November 11, 2001 - 1:55 pm:

The Klingon Theme from TMP is the epitome of Klingon for me. My favorite part of my favorite Star Trek movie (First Contact) features this theme. Its when Worf first pops up on the Defiant. When I saw this in the theatre I kind of "whooped" at this point. It earned me some strange looks :)

There's some nits on the publicity photo on the back of the ST-TMP CD original issue. Which I think was also on the 1979 LP release. Stephen Collins is wearing a gold uniform in the pic; he wore a gray one in the film. Shatner is wearing the Captain's long-sleeved uniform with shoulder bars; the bars were eliminated from the uniform in the movie. And, Nimoy is not wearing the collar under the uniform that he wore throughout the movie.
Here's Trekmovie's review of the new three-CD release from La-La-Land records.
