Metallica S & M

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Misc. Albums: Metallica S & M
By Brian Webber on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 2:11 pm:

The WORST of the WORST of MEtallica. My God what happened? It's like, every album after Master of the Puppets was worse than the one before it! At least Garage Inc. had the pretty decent cover of Turn the Page going for it, but S & M has none of that!

By Benn on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 2:34 pm:

Actually, Brian, I think ...And Justice For All was the last great Metallica album. But, yeah, they've been going downhill since. I blame "Nothing Else Matters". Yeah nothing, but money, right Lars?

"Hero of the Day" is the last great Metallica song, and "Whiskey In the Jar" is the best cut off Garage, Inc. (redeemed because it includes the Garage Days Revisited E.P. on it, otherwise, Garage, Inc. is Metallica ripping off its audience, who are too dumb to know better anymore.)

As for S & M, I haven't bought it or heard much of anything from it. Let's keep it that way. No wonder Jason quit. Cliff probably would've killed himself rather than contribute to this mess.

S&M does have No Leif Clover

By Brian Webber on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 5:49 pm:

Whiskey in the Jar? Ugh! That song was terrible! BOTH versions! *vomit*

By Benn on Sunday, May 27, 2001 - 8:24 pm:

Hey! It ain't as bad as their version of "Tuesday's Gone". Metallica has no business doing Southern Rock.

For that matter it's not as bad as "I Disappear". (I wish you would.) That song has the worst excuse for a riff I ever heard. It's like Kirk had the hiccups while playing his guitar and they thought it was kewl.

By Cynical-Chick on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 7:00 pm:

HEY! What's wrong with "Nothing Else Matters"?

I think it's a good song...and besides, not only do I like Metallica, my boyfriend (long-distance) e-mailed the lyrics to me, and I sent him the MP3.

So, yeah, it has direct meaning to me...

And I really like Ride the Lightning.

And "Turn the Page" is a GREAT song, Benn.

By Benn on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 5:46 am:

I agree.

Bob Seger's version.

Are you looking to be slapped?

By Hannah F., West Wing Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:11 pm:

Interestingly, REload's cover was cow blood & the artist's semen/urine pressed between glass. (Even Hetfield called the artist a 'sick f*&k).

Hey, if they were going to put $hit between the covers....:O

By Hannah F., West Wing Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:12 pm:

Oh, I bought 'Master...' tonight.

By Benn on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:12 pm:

Just speaking the truth, my dear.

I LIKE "I Disappear." *smacks benn*

By Benn on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:18 pm:

I still say, "I Disappear" should.

By Benn on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:22 pm:

And y'know, I still haven't heard anything off the current Metallica album, St. Anger. Nor do I have a desire to. The band is finished, far as I'm concerned.

Um, yeah, well, so does its "prequel" album, Load.

Same with everything since ...And Justice for All.

By Benn on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:35 pm:

Huh? And by that you mean....?

By Hannah F., West Wing Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 11:40 pm:

Pure "Scheisse," as they say in Germany.

By ScottN on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 - 12:19 am:

Just make sure you Pay Lars.

By Brian Fitzgerald on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 - 12:23 am:

I like Matallica's cover of Turn the Page better than Seger's. With that cover they managed to do what many cover's don't. They took the original and made it there own (rather than just sound like a bad imitation of the origional) but at the same time not ruin what was good about the original.

As for St. Anger and Metallica today; I've seen Metallica twice, once in 2000 and once in 2003. The 2000 show is still the best concert I've ever been to, even if it did cost $65.00 to see. The 2003 show cost nearly $90.00 per ticket and didn't impress me nearly as much as the 2000 show. When Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park (2 of of the 2003 opening bands) return to Atlanta I will probably go see either of them agian, but if Metallica returns I probably won't go see them, espically at the prices they charge.

Limp Bizkit & Linkin Park? *shudder* No offense meant, buddy.

I hear Metallica is fantastic live.

ATL, huh? You probably met a few of my coworkers.

It's a shame you haven't heard "St. Anger" Benn. You might actually enjoy some of it.

I personally think S&M was a brilliant fusion of orchestra and metal. Michael Kamen is an absolute master of his domain.

I was also lucky enough to be present at the Kiss Symphony earlier this year. I am curious to know what others think of Kiss' foray into this territory.

By Benn on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 6:37 pm:

Well, Rodney, as I've indicated earlier, I feel Metallica has deteriorated since the Metallica album. "Nothing Else Matters" may be a good song, but its success ruined the band. It's taken the edge off the band's sound, IMHO. It may be that I'm missing a Metallica classic by not listening to St. Anger. But quite honestly, I don't care. Of course, Lars and James Hetfield's position on the whole Napster thing a few years back also makes me think even less of the group. Sorry. But thanks for the recommendation anyhow.
