Where Is The Box Set For...

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Boxed Sets: Where Is The Box Set For...
By Benn on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 1:01 pm:

You'd think, that every artist with any longevity would have a box set by now. Not so. Here's are some acts that do not have a box set (at least in the U.S.) and should.

1. The Beatles - unless you count the three volume Anthology set
2. Paul McCartney - Wingspan is not enough! Where's "Give Ireland Back To the Irish"?, "Spies Like Us"? (Okay they're bonus tracks on import CDs. Where their American release?) Surely Macca has some unreleased material, live tracks, or alternate versions of songs that his fans would want to hear.
3. The Kinks - A criminally under-rated band. They deserve a box set for that reason alone.
4. Neil Young - He's promised a follow up to Decade, which has never happened. There was talk of a ten disc set box set which has never materialized. Whassup? (And god let it include his version of "Sweet Home Alabama".)

Anyone else?

I don't think we'll see a Beatles set, at least not for a very long time. The Anthology set *is* the box set; it just isn't box shaped.

Kinks--completely agree (that they need a box and that they're underated.)

And let's add Queen to the list.

By Benn on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 6:28 pm:

Yeah, a Queen box set would be nice at that.

By Todd Pence on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 8:52 pm:

The Rolling Stones have not had a proper box set unless you count the three-CD singles collection, which contains no post-1970 material.

Benn, you had pointed me in the direction of a 5 CD boxed set of Scott Joplin's works, yet I cannot find it in any music store so far. (don't want to plug those money-hungry #@!#$$'s yet) If you would be so kind, did you aquire this set in a TV offer, or what? (I know I'm asking YOU to plug those money-hungry #@!#$$'s, but hey ...)

(as a sidebar, I actually typed "[shift] 31445's" for the alluded curse word, but the [shift] 5 (the percent key) came up "96" when I previewed the message. ? ... what the %%%% is that?)

There was a Queen box set! I had it (but had to sell it to make rent).

By Benn on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 7:19 am:

It's called The Complete Works of Scott Joplin. It's on LaserLight records. There are five CDs to it. I should clarify that it's really not a box set per se. I've seen the discs sold together as a package, but the ones I got I bought individually, which will be your best bet. But don't worry, the last time I saw a disc at Best Buy (the one out at Midway and LBJ), they were asking $6.99 for it. I'm heading out to that Best Buy later this afternoon. Today's payday (Yay!). Blue Oyster Cult has a new disc out and I'm grabbin' it! Anyway, if I see it there, I'll let you know, if you want.

Hey Dw, was the Queen box set an import? I don't recall that was an American box set for them

By Todd Pence on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 11:52 am:

Hey, Ben, I expect a review of Curse of the Hidden Mirror.
I just got the new Asia album Aura, and now a new BOC is out! Can my wallet take it?

By Benn on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 1:24 pm:

I just woke up. (I work grave yards. The time you see listed when this messages is accurate for me within minutes.) I gotta get dressed, then get my check, then get Curse of the Hidden Hirror. I'll let you know about it, either tonight or tomorrow morning!

By Benn on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 7:53 pm:

Derf, I checked at that Best Buy today. The only Scott Joplin they've got is a "best of". For all I know it's been deleted. When I've got time, I'll look into it.

Thanks, dude ... (um .. er ... cowpoke)

By Benn on Thursday, June 07, 2001 - 6:06 pm:

I checked with cdnow.com. They've got the Scott Joplin discs I spoke of, at least individually. They're priced at $5.27 each. (I need to order the first and fifth one myself.)

I got a couple this weekend for Perry Como and Sammy Davis, Jr, the latter of which I'm listening to the third CD of now, specifically "The Candy Man". I love that song. I downloaded it off of Napster but several seconds were cut off at the end. Now I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Now "Mr. Bojangles" is on. I like only two versions of that song: Sammy's and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's (I like their's a little more). Sammy's is the more mellow of the two, till it reaches a slight crescendo, but it works and is a good version.

Now it's the "Beretta" theme, "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow". I'd forgotten he'd done that, but then I never was much of a Beretta fan.

By Benn on Monday, June 18, 2001 - 7:10 am:

Bob Dylan did a gawdawful version of "Mr. Bojangles". He took a three minute song, and doubled its length by repeating the chorus after every verse. Nightmarish.

The version of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Mr. Bojangles" commonly heard on the radio is incomplete to me. I used to have it on a 45. The B-side had another version of the song. It was preceeded by a bit called "Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy" that segues into "Bojangles". It's a wonderful, complementary combination. The only way to really hear the song. It's on The Best of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on EMI records, though they call "Mr. Bojangles/With Prologue". Same thing.

The Beatles' red and blue compilations effectively act as a box set in themsleves.

By Benn on Sunday, March 03, 2002 - 5:08 pm:

Yeah, but box sets generally have previously unreleased tracks on them, too. The red and blue compilations lack these. I suppose if you count them and The Beatles Anthology discs, you could say that there is now a Beatles box set.

KISS has a box set out now. It was released last year, btw.
