Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Music Videos: Current (or recent) videos you either love or are sick of!
By BF on Monday, June 11, 2001 - 3:59 pm:

The title says it all. By recent, I mean anything that's only been out for a couple of months at most.

By BF on Monday, June 11, 2001 - 3:59 pm:

Love:

"BootyLicious" - Destiny's Child

"There She Goes" - Babyface

"My Way (remix)" - Limp Bizkit

There are more, but I can't think of the titles right now.

Like, but am starting to get tired of seeing:

"Blow You Mind" - Eve & Gwen Stefani

"Lady Marmalade" - Mya, Pink, Lil Kim, and Christina Aguilera

Sick of:

Anything by Britney Spears, N*Stink, Backstreet Boys, Marilyn Manson and Eminem that's EVER aired (actually, I liked "My Name Is", but that's the only Eminem song I ever liked).

"Get Your Freak On" - Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot. That *song* should be a felony!

By ScottN on Monday, June 11, 2001 - 5:50 pm:

Sick of: pretty much all of them.

By Benn on Monday, June 11, 2001 - 6:12 pm:

BF, it sounds almost like you're critiquing the songs and not just the videos.

I agree with Scott. I don't watch videos, so much as I listen to them. I've got a good enough imagination that I can supply my own image of what a song's about.

By Brian Fitzgerald on Monday, June 11, 2001 - 9:08 pm:

I dug the video for My Name Is by Emminem, love that spoof of Clinton & Monica. Also by Emminem The Real Slim Shady

"so I can sit next to Carson Daily and Fred Durst and hear them argue about who she gave **** to first............I'm sick of all you little girl and boy groups. All you do it anoy me; so I have been sent here to destroy you." How can you not like a song with that messege?

By BF on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 1:54 am:

Nope, Benn. I'm sick of them being overplayed on MTV & VH1. There is such a thing as burnout, ya know! :)

Bootylicious - I like the video, because: 1. It has good choreography during the dancing portions.
2. The outfits they are wearing in the video! `nuff said.
3. Its probably the best video Destiny's Child has done ("Say My Name" is the only one that even comes close).

There She Goes - Hmmmm.....Babyface (looking a little like Lenny Kravitz), some dude whose name I don't know, and A BEVY OF HOTTTT WOMEN! Plus, it doesn't have a ton of flashy imagery and does have a sort of minimalist approach. What's not to like?

My Way (remix) - Seeing the members of Limp Bizkit is several different silly outfits (Wes in the "nude muscle" suit and straw hat, and the members of the band as cavemen, in particular) is just too hilarious!

I think Lil Kim and Christina look horrible in the Lady Marmalade video. I like the concept, but its been aired waaay too much, in my opinion. (I saw it 4 times in 5 hours once. Most videos get played twice at most in that span of time)

On to the videos on my "Sick Of" list:

Get Your Freak On (may be "Ur" instead of "Your"):
The song is godawful, and the video is even worse. All the artists with cameo appearances in the video (LL Cool J, Eve, Aaliyah, etc) must either be TRUE friends of hers, or were forced to appear by the record company. Dancing in camoflague is waaaaay passe, and I won't even comment on the dancers who look like miners\sewer workers in black pleather!

(I like some of Missy Elliot's stuff, by the way. Just not this piece of drek.)

Britney Spears - Not only can I not stand her singing (she's one of the worst singers out there, bar none!), but she's as fake as Vanilla Ice! She launched into an obsenity-laced tirade backstage at an awards show and had her microphone on, but was saved because the P.A. wasn't on. Plus, she claims to be a virgin but dresses like a totat slut! (See the videos for "Hit Me One More Time" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", for example) I did like the video for "Lucky", however, but I watched it with the sound off.

N*Sync - The video for "Bye, Bye, Bye" and the video after it, where they were dolls were pretty good. But I can't stand their other videos. The new one for "Pop" is their worst yet. BSB? Hate every video of theirs I've ever seen. I liked the parody Blink 182 did of one of their videos, though. And I'm surprised "Weird Al" hasn't done a BSB parody.

Eminem - Liked the video & song "My Name Is" and I thought the video for "The Real Slim Shady" was hilarious, but other than the lines Brian Fitzgerald mentioned, I absolutely hate the song!

Marilyn Manson - Can't stand him. Ergo, I can't stand his videos.

There ARE some artists I like but I feel have done crappy videos, and vice versa (Hate the artist\song, but like the video). For instance, I can't stand Bjork, but I like the video where she blows up an art museum at the end. And I like "Weird Al", but I don't like the video for "Jurassic Park" (I'm not a big fan of claymation).

My favorite video of all time is a three-way tie between "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, "Photograph" by Def Leppard and "Every Breath You Take" by the Police.

By BF on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 1:59 am:

By the way, I actually like some Boy & Girl Band songs, but not many. ("One More Night (Una Noche)", "I Do" - 98 Degrees, "Bye, Bye, Bye" - N*Sync, "Get Over Yourself" - Eden's Crush.....that's it, unless the Spice Girls count)

By ScottN on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 2:07 am:

Guilty Pleasure: Backstreet Boys "Larger than Life" video.

I hate the song, but I think the vid is OK.

By Brian Fitzgerald on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 2:18 pm:

She launched into an obsenity-laced tirade backstage at an awards show and had her microphone on, but was saved because the P.A. wasn't on.

I downloaded the mp3 of that and didn't think it was as bad as everyone said.

Plus, she claims to be a virgin but dresses like a totat slut! (See the videos for "Hit Me One More Time" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know", for example)

I do know a girl who dressed like a slut all through HS and beyond but did not loose her virgenity untill she was 20. So it does happen, although I don't think that is the case with Britney, because her BF from which ever boyband he's from could ditch her and find someone who would give it up if she wasn't.

By BF on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 8:13 pm:

I'm not worrying about Britney Spears (perfect initials, in my opinion), because she won't be around in another 5 years. I predict the Backstreet Boys won't be, either (a few of them may be, as solo artists).

Christina Aguilera may still be around in 5 years. Unlike Britney, who I think will have a great future in the porn industry once everyone tires of her, Christina CAN sing!

Is "Larger Than Life" the video where they're on a spaceship?

By ScottN on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 - 10:44 pm:

BF. I agree about Christina. And yes, that's the spaceship video.

By Benn on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 7:28 am:

I'd be very cautious about making any predictions, gentlemen. I remember back in the `80's, it was predicted that Cyndi Lauper's career would overshadow Madonna's. If Britney proves resillient and very media savvy, she could outlast Christina. The music industry is not one that rewards talent. If that were true, The Spice Girls would never gotten near a recording studio.

By Adam Bomb on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 8:37 am:

Definitely sick of "Southside," that Moby/Gwen Stefani duet that VH1 seems to play every 20 minutes or so. Also, the freak show "Lady Marmalade", with four ladies soon to be featured on VH1's "Where Are They Now?"

By BF on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 4:14 pm:

Actually, Benn, you're right about the Spice Girls. But, I think Melanie C is a •••• good singer. Its her looks that would have held her back. She's gone solo. I recommend checking out some of her work. (No, I don't own her album, or any of the Spice Girls albums, but I've heard a LOT of tracks from them)

By BF on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 - 4:17 pm:

The only thing good about the "Southside" video (which I'm sick of, too) is that Gwen looks HOT in that video.

I wouldn't be too harsh about those artists in "Lady Marmalade", Adam. I think they'll all still be around in a few years, except maybe Lil Kim.

By MarkN on Friday, June 22, 2001 - 5:05 am:

Regarding Britney's "obsenity-laced tirade backstage at an awards show" I heard she only said the F-word once. And if you think that's bad, did anyone see the new "South Park" episode tonight? They said "sh¡t" about 165 times, as shown by the running count they had of it. It's basically about how people cuss way too much and that it should only be done sparingly, or the ancient Standards and Practices Gods will come and smite you. Now I wonder how soon other shows will follow suit, how many and how often.

By Brian Webber on Friday, June 22, 2001 - 8:00 pm:

162. Not 165. :)

And it was the KNIGHTS of Standards and Practices.

By MarkN on Sunday, June 24, 2001 - 3:25 am:

I meant 165. Really I did. I dunno why I said 162. Ok, so it was Knights of Standards and Practices. I'm an old fart and ferget easily sometimes, ok? Gimme some leeway, why don'tcha ya young whippersnapper?

Anyway, how'd ya like it? I thought it was hilarious. I doubt they're gonna say that word every episode from now on, though, but I wonder if shows like NYPD Blue, CSI, The Beast (which had NYPD Blue-class nudity on its first ep), the two Law and Order shows and others will start using it now, since they're all on at 10pm.

That reminds me (and this is purely rheotorical). Why does ABC allow "ass-hole" on NYPD Blue at 10pm but not at 12:05am when "Politically Incorrect" is on? Totally doesn't make any sense.

By Cartman on Sunday, June 24, 2001 - 1:41 pm:

Meebroc!!!!!

By Brian Webber on Sunday, June 24, 2001 - 2:30 pm:

MarkN: You got it wrong again. I meant 165. Really I did. I dunno why I said 162. You said 165, and I corrected you. It was 162. How old are you anyway?

By Brian Fitzgerald on Sunday, June 24, 2001 - 10:01 pm:

Chicago Hope had someone saw "$hit Happens" a few years back and the rest of the networks didn't follow. South Park was one of the first to say God D@mn, and I don't know how many have followed that one.

By BF on Sunday, June 24, 2001 - 11:33 pm:

Move this shiznit over to the South Park board, please!

YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORI-TI! :)

Incidentally, I got sick of South Park. I haven't watched it since LAST season's premiere, when Mr. Garrison finally admitted he was gay.

By Adam Bomb on Monday, July 09, 2001 - 8:16 pm:

Best Song and video of 2000-"Kryptonite"
3 Doors Down RULE!

By Benn on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 4:20 am:

Has anyone seen Weezer's new one, "Keep Fishin'"? I love tht video! It has Weezer performing as the musical guest on The Muppet Show. Miss Piggy kidnaps the band's drummer and Animal ("An-i-mal!" My favorite Muppet) fills in for him.

The recreation of the show's sets is letter perfect. Heck, even Statler and Waldorf make an appearance. (But then, so Bunson and Beaker, The swedish Chef, Gonzo, Rowlf, Fozzie, Kermit [of course] and the chickens.) I cracked up when I saw it. It's as good as the video for Weezer's "Buddy Holly".

By Brian Webber on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 1:34 am:

I don't like the song, or the artist (she scares me a little. Don't know why), but I enjoy the video for Objection (Tango) by Shakira. Frankly I just love any story where a cheating schmuck gets his ass whipped. I cheered during the chapter of Stepehn King's Rose Madder where the fat black woman peed on the wife-beating thug's head. :)

By Sven of Nine, the non-expert on boy bands thanks to all of you guys on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 1:16 pm:

But, I think Melanie C is a •••• [sic] good singer.

I take it you didn't see or hear her rendition of "Anarchy In The UK" at a fairly recent music festival, then?

I don't watch many music videos as of late, but although I'm in no way a fan I did like Marilyn Manson's video for his cover of "Tainted Love". (Then again that's my uncle talking.)

By Brian Webber on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 8:58 pm:

Svben: Actually, it seems that at least 2 of the Spice Girls can actually sing. Wonder why they didn't do so when they were in the group. Anyway, I own solo albums by Geri Halliwell and Mel C. and they are quality albums.

By ScottN on Monday, September 09, 2002 - 9:46 pm:

Re: Spice Girls.

The most frightening thing I have ever read is in Arthur C. Clarke's "The Light of Other Days", where Ms. Halliwell is the SecGen of the UN!

By `Svben` of Nine on Friday, September 13, 2002 - 2:20 pm:

Speaking of the late lamented Spice Girls (if not already then surely by now defunct), I did like their video for their first single "Wannabe" - allegedly filmed in a single take (you can see Geri stumble a bit towards the end of the video) and, it seems, Mel B having a bit of a "cold feeling" during that video... :O

By Vortaka on Saturday, May 08, 2004 - 9:00 am:

I don't care what anyone says.
I like the Spice Girls "Say You Will Be There" video. It's a fun catchy song and a fun video. The girls all look adorable in it too.
They're all wearing gloves (that would appeal to people with glove fetishes...just kidding).

By Adam Bomb on Saturday, October 30, 2004 - 10:11 pm:

Sheryl Crow's video for "Steve McQueen" rocks. But - the song on the CD has an expletive that's deleted on the video. I thought VH-1 censored it, but the expletive is also out on the DVD of Sheryl's videos that came with the special edition of her "Very Best Of" collection.

By NGen on Saturday, January 29, 2005 - 1:15 pm:

I like Gwen Stefani's new video "If I Were a Rich Girl".

It starts out with the young Hokuku girls (Gwen's special "find" from Japan) imagining an adventure for their Gwen and Eve dolls in a toy ship in an aquarium. The scene then shifts to Gwen and Eve in a sort of pirate movie. Both are attired rather like skank stowaways, but that's expected. The Hokuku girls dance behind Gwen. They almost look like zombie hookers, but its all in fun. The song is also a clever and catchy take on the ultra kitschy "If I was a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof.
