So I Dunno If This Goes Here Since There's Few Anime Related Stuff Here... But Here Goes...

Hmmm... I Know This Goes In NEON GENESIS EVANGELION But CRUEL ANGEL THESIS...
Hmmm... The Japanese Theme To GUNSMITH CATS... GHOST IN THE SHELL Main Theme... Uhm... MANATSU NO EVE From TENCHI The Movie 2...
So Anyone Else Here Watch Anime other Than POKEMON Or DIGIMON Or Sailor Moon?

By BF on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 - 3:38 am:

Yes. I watch a series called Martian Successor Nadesico, which has great beginning and end themes. I just bought and watched tape #6, but I believe there are 8 or 9 tapes out.

I picked up the first tape of Sorceror Hunters recently, but I'm going to have to watch at least one more tape before I decide if its worth watching the entire series (and the sequel series) or not.

My favorite Anime theme is the theme to the original Tenchi Muyo OVAs. That, or the theme to Gigantor (the original series, not New Adventures Of Gigantor)

I'm considering picking up Cowboy Bepop, but I've heard the series is kind of slow until the third tape.

I only watch dubbed; only have one subbed tape, which is Bubblegum Crisis Volume 1 from Animego. Unfortunately, about two months after I got it they started putting more than one episode on each tape. Nevertheless, I wasn't too impressed with the series and never picked up anymore tapes.

Haven't seen Ghost In The Shell yet, but I thought Akira was lousy, and Neon Genesis Evangelion doesn't look like my kind of show. I wish they would make Ninja Scroll into a series!

By BF on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 - 3:42 am:

Before anyone says anything, Ninja Resurrection is NOT a sequel to Ninja Scroll! It just has a character with the same name, and a similar title, in order to leech off of the popularity of Ninja Scroll!

I haven't seen NR, nor do I plan to. I've read enough reviews and talked to a lot of people who have seen it, and the general consensus is that its garbage.

I had the good fortune to be stationed in Okinawa in 1980 -- they were rerunning the Gundam 0079 series in the afternoon on local TV. Even though I understood only a few words, I was taken with the animation style, the characters, the sound effects, and most of all, the music! Japanese record stores had tons of BGM albums for any show you could think of. These ran about $15-$20 apiece (when most vinyl records you could buy on base were $6 to $8, if memory serves). There were dozens of variations of Yamato soundtracks -- one even sung by a high school choir!

My faves are Mobile Suit Gundam, the BGM for the show, and Symphonic Poem Gundam, a suite of music. I have since purchased both on CD. The first track on Symphonic Poem Gundam is GREAT to wake up to!

Japanese pressings were much better than any U.S. disc I bought. I heard that it was because the type of vinyl they used was illegal to use in the U.S. due to its toxicity (if it caught on fire -- poisonous fumes?) The Japanese pressing of the Star Wars soundtrack was unbelieveable!

BTW -- is there a soundtrack available for Ghost in the Shell? I've been looking all over for it.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 - 4:43 pm:

The songs and BGM used in the show "Shoujo Kakumei Utena" are quite exceptionally good. Some orchestral, some hard rock/metal, nearly all make no sense when you analyze the meaning of the lyrics. I mean, there's one entitled "Magic Lantern Butterfly Moth 16th Century," for Pete's sake! Still, they sound wonderful. And its theme song, "Rinbu Revolution," is one of the most relentlessly energetic and cheerful songs I've ever heard. It's one of those I cannot listen to and feel bad.

BF, it's my civic duty to insist that you watch subtitled anime to get the meaning that the creators of the show intended. (Except in the case of things like Evangelion, where nobody can figure out what the h*ll it meant anyway.) And you might want to rent or borrow the rest of Bubblegum Crisis - it does pick up somewhat. (I like its music, too. Priss and the Replicants, woo!)

By BF on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 5:27 am:

MattP, the only Japanese I want to hear is Takeshi Kaga on Iron Chef. I watch dubbed for two reasons:

1. Its harder to pay attention to what's going on onscreen if you have to read what everyone is saying! (rewind, rewind, rewind? No thanks!) Same reason I only watch dubbed HK films.

2. Subs cost more, and I have a limited budget. Don't tell me to rent, either, because most of the video stores around here have a crappy selection of anime subs. I've looked!

Amyone know where I can find a good pic of the Devil Gundam? I don't care if its from a show or a pic of a model kit.

I must admit that I really love the Gundam Wing Theme - it's so... cool.

Anyway, the soundtrack of Ghost in the Shell is indeed available - I have it on mp3. Also be sure to check out the Akira score by Geinoh Yamashirogumi (a performance group headed by Shuji Yamashiro). Just about anything by Joe Hisaishi, who composed the music for all of Miyazaki's Ghibli films, is worthwhile.

I have the Gundam Wing Theme on Mp3. I'm trying to find the extended version by Two-Mix, but the only sites I've found with it have broken links. :(

By SomeDude on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 4:56 pm:

Megumi Hayashibara Makes Some Great Anime And JPop Songs... ^_^ I have Her Iravati CD and Want The "BIRTHDAY OF REI AYANAMI" CDs

By SomeDude on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 4:57 pm:

Oop! OI Forgot This...
I Got Most Of My MP3s From NAPSTER Before They Changed,... You Can get A Few But Not As Big Of Selection...

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 - 7:04 pm:

Megumi Hayashibara is *always* great, no matter what she's singing or what character she's playing. Masami Okui is pretty good as well, and she and Hayashibara have collaborated a couple of times.

BF, I'm not really going to push it, but I have to say that you're missing out on a lot if you refuse to watch anime in its original form. If you'd just try and get into it, I think you'd find that it's really not very difficult at all to understand what's going on in any subtitled anime (except, of course, for Evangelion, which is incomprehensible in any language).

I know that many people didn't like the Final Fantasy Anime (I did like it), but the music in that was very true to the series. Anyone know if Uematso Nobeu (sp?) wrote the music for the anime?

By SomeDude on Friday, June 29, 2001 - 10:45 pm:

I Watch EVANGELION... I Get It Of Sorts... Except Why The Ending Of The Series Was In That Way....
Well Anyway, Back To Music... Anyone Here Listens To TENCHI Music?

By BF on Friday, June 29, 2001 - 11:44 pm:

I'm trying to find the soundtrack to the original Tenchi OVAs. I have a copy of the Tenchi Universe soundtrack, dubbed onto cassette.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, June 29, 2001 - 11:55 pm:

I haven't been able to find much. All I have is Ryoko's theme and "Photon, Proton, Synchrotron" in both English and Japanese. (I *heart* Washuu!)

By MarkN on Sunday, July 01, 2001 - 7:28 am:

"Dorothy? Dorothy! Where are you? Dorothy?"

"Oh, Anime! Here I am, Anime! I'm right here! Oh, Toto, I don't think she can hear me!"

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Has anyone seen anything about that new Final Fantasy movie yet? I saw on Dateline the other night a story they did on the making of it and it looks awesome! From the clips they showed it still looked a little like CGI cuz some of the movements were a tad stiff and halting but it wasn't noticable all the time. They used real people in suits with electrodes attached to all of their joints, and then had them do various movements, all of which was then fed into the computer and then the character movements were all created that way. Aki's 60,000 strands of hair were all animated individually. I can hardly even imagine how long that must've taken. She also made Entertainment Weekly's annual "IT" list and the picture is remarkable! It looks so real that I wondered if maybe they had an actual woman dressed as her.

No Gundam board that I could find! So it goes here!

Cartoon network started showing the new English version of the original Mobile Suit Gundam yesterday. I've waited 21 years to see this, ever since seeing the second run on afternoon TV in Japan, in 1980. I was taken with the story without even knowing much Japanese, and loved the music and theme song (bringing this on topic!)

I miss the original theme in the new version, but they are using the original BGM and sound effects well. It will take some getting used to the voice actors. But I can say I am so excited to finally be able to see this all in English!!

Concerning Megumi, has anyone else seen the first Tenchi movie? She voices Achika, Tenchi's mom.

Anyway, she sings the Japanese version of the theme song, "Alchemy of Love" - it's great. :)

I've Seen All Three Tenchi Movies... I Like The Ending Themes On All Three...
