Mix Discs/Tapes...watcha makin'?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Music Catch-Basin: Mix Discs/Tapes...watcha makin'?
By Miko Iko on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - 2:54 pm:

This was inspired in part by the lively discussion regarding Benn's "Numbers Racket" tape as well as a couple of series of discs I'm putting together right now. Lots of folks make 'em and the interesting ones usually get passed around, so....watcha makin'?

The two series I'm putting together right now are Cities and Seasons.

"Autumn" comes immediately to mind, and it came about because I have an annual ritual of playing certain songs this time of year, and they're on vinyl, so why not lump them onto a single disc for convenience? When looking through my collection it became clear that the other seasons should not be too hard. Still...I'm open to suggestion. "Autumn" already has a set list but the other three are open game, especially "Winter."

The Cities series is still just a fledgling concept, but my approach will be to feature music that represents the topic city stylistically, and not songs about the city. Frexample: "New York" will feature the Velvets, Talking Heads, Smithereens, etc. "New Orleans" will be pretty self explanitory. Also planned: "London", "Seattle" and "San Antonio".

Suggestions? Set Lists?

By Benn on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 4:48 am:

While I'm still hoping to get a burner by year's end, this may end up being on tapes. But assuming that I don't work New Year's Eve, I'm going to work up a series of tapes as year end review. This is something I've done before.

Included in the selections will be tributes to many of the celebrities who died this past year. Because of the way my work situation has been this year, I was going to make that an ongoing theme of the collection. While that may still happen, clearly the events of September 11th will be mentioned throughout the collection.

This is going to be a more somber set than I originally planned.

By Miko Iko on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 7:15 am:

Yeah Brian, you got it right, it's about homemade discs and tapes. I considered the sink but then this topic just seemed so lonely:) Anyway, it seems to work here too. Boy, you've been busy, and a man after my own heart too. What variety! Lots of my faves also (I once considered listing the Marvies under the Guilty Pleasures board, and you've got them on the same disc with the Old 97's- brilliant)

Benn, you've just gotta get that burner, especially if you've got old hard to get vinyl (which I guess you do). One of the first things I did was to record my old Tom Verlaine albums on to a disc- Warner Bros. will absolutely never release them (pity). Next thing was to make the Seven Dwarves (for the car)...you can guess what they sound like, especially Grumpy.

About your year end recap- I heard Dan Bern doing some songs about 9-11 on the radio during an interview, but I don't think I've heard of anybody recording anything yet.

Todd- it may be a cool idea to try to put together another set list for Autumn. Yours is definitely going in a different direction from mine, but that's why I opened it up: to find out what's blatantly obvious to others and consider it. Mine kinda wants to be more of an English folk thing, though it does venture into some jazz, revolving around harvesting and the like.

I still have some indecision regarding which version of "John Barleycorn" to use. Most people know Traffic's version, which really highlights the ironic nature of the song. But I also have friends who have been lobbying for Fairport Convention, who do it as a sort of celebratory drinking song complete with drunken harmonies. I'm leaning towards Traffic, myself.

By Brian Webber on Thursday, October 11, 2001 - 1:19 pm:

Ah gee, thanks Miko. I try to be as varitous as possible. Look at the stark contrast between songs 1 and 2 on Disc 7. A Kid rock parody, followed by a serious song about a battered wife who finally gets the courage to leave (it makes me cry occasionally it's such a good song).

By Cazbob on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 7:36 am:

Miko,

Here are the lyrics to the Dan Bern song you mentioned, along with another he wrote recently:

NYC 911

Written by Dan Bern

it was indian summer in new york
with an early morning sun
tuesday, september 11
2001

uptown, young moms with strollers
pushed baby boys and girls
across the hudson river
new jersey shone like pearls

downtown, wall street traders
stirred their coffee cups
across the great east river
brooklyn was just waking up

the sky was blue and cloudless
the birds they gave their song
a day so strangely perfect
but not, dear god, for long

the morning calm was shattered
a nightmare took its place
an airplane flew directly
in the world trade tower's face

a fiery explosion
thousand feet above the ground
it felt just like an earthquake
from miles you heard the sound

there was no explanation
folks stood shocked and stunned
and as they watched a 2nd plane
ripped through the other one

as firefighters rushed to cope
with what was going on
a 3rd plane full of passengers
smashed the pentagon

the awful truth was dawning
this was a planned attack
desperate people tried to leave
the cops kept going back

two towers now were burning
two deathly morning rides
no one could imagine
the terrible scene inside

people started jumping
to escape the howling flames
two went down while holding hands
we didn't know their names

thousands still were trapped inside
those fire sticks of hell
and as folks watched in disbelief
first one, then both towers fell

people screamed and fled
a dust cloud left you blind
and never once did you forget
the poor souls left behind

the news began to flash around
hijackers with knives
bravery on a 4th plane
saving who knows how many lives

scores of policemen died
when earth and sky converged
hundreds of brave firefighters
never did emerge

pictures of the missing
soon lined every new york block
some turned up in hospitals
most did not

people who would never have
flown the flag before
proudly hung the stars and stripes
over their front door

people they lit candles
and said what can we do
they went and prayed in churches
and in the subway too

the president he seemed to grow up
right before our eyes
said we'd find out who did this
and they'd pay with their lives

mayors, governors, senators
foes the day before
all joined hands as comrades
as the country edged toward war

but what kind of war can this be
when the foe don't show his face
when his own life ain't worth nothing
and fear's his only ace

i can't say what will happen
how ends this deathly game
one thing i know for certain
we'll never be the same

we'll look over our shoulder
pause when we hear a plane
we'll search the face of strangers
and wear the scars of pain

i pray we'll find who thought this up
no matter who or where
and that we'll string 'em up
and leave 'em hanging in times square

i pray we'll try to understand
the anger behind the deed
i pray we'll know all people are the same color
when they bleed

i pray we aren't so frightened
to let freedom find its end
the freedom that we desire
so much to defend

and as i sit over breakfast this morning
in my right hand's a cold, cold knife
that won't feel the same in my fingers
all the rest of the days of my life

and as i sit over breakfast this morning
in my left hand i'm clutching my fork
and i think back on an
indian summer morning in new york

America, Hometown of the World

By Dan Bern

amidst the pictures of the missing
and the flag at half mast
and the tears of ringing sorrow
nerves jangling from the blast
and the films deemed unnecessary
'cause the same thing's on the news
and old enemies embracing
there's no conflicting views
and the once-crass politicians
become leaders 'fore our eyes
and our lives, like the lottery
as far as who lives or dies
and you see it on every streetcorner
that love is stronger than hatred
and the strong will survive
america, hometown of the world
america, hometown of the world

from the towers of new york city
to the dust of san antone
boulevards of los angeles
dakota faces carved in stone
maybe your grandma and your grandpa
sailed the ocean long ago
hope in every drop of blood
hearts to melt the snow
and you can knock down a building
you can kill a woman or a man
but from the brooklyn bridge to the golden gate
what's born in love will stand
and you can see it on every streetcorner
love is stronger that hatred
and the strong will survive
america, hometown of the world
america, hometown of the world

over there is brooklyn
chicago, seattle, miami
dallas, las vegas, minneapolis
oklahoma city, memphis tennessee

out of the rubble
of the ruins still smoking
of the stones and twisted iron
and the searchers scraped and choking
comes a new hymn of allegiance
to compassion and rebirth
every color of the rainbow
in every corner of the earth
let the enemies of liberty
from this day forward tremble
let hatred and oppression
die with the heroes in the rubble
and you see it on every streetcorner
that love is stronger than hatred
and the strong will survive
america, hometown of the world
america, hometown of the world

By Miko Iko on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 1:16 pm:

Yowee, Cazbob! You musta got those from his website or something. Did it mention if they've been recorded yet?

By Todd Pence on Sunday, October 14, 2001 - 7:41 pm:

Since I haven't heard "NYC 911" yet, and don't know the tune; I've been putting the words in my head to the theme song of "Gilligan's Island" . . . how absurd can you get?

By Cazbob on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 9:48 am:

Miko,

I did get the lyrics from the website. I have not heard the songs yet. I am still waiting for my copy of New American Language to be delivered.

I find the lyrics very moving. Dan has the ability to write very sensitive material one day and very irreverent material the next. I guess that's why I like him so much...

Dan will be playing locally here in Northern Virginia next month. I will probably go to the show. Maybe he will do one or both of these songs.

By Todd Pence on Monday, October 15, 2001 - 5:41 pm:

Hey, you live in Northern VA too, Cazbob?

By Miko Iko on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 6:47 am:

I'm sure he'll do at least one of them. I heard him do both in a radio interview. There's a AAA format station in New York that not only plays Dan Bern but has live songs available for broadcast. They had a song that was very popular in the spring called "Kid's Prayer", I'm sure these two will have the same affect. They stream on line at WFUV, though it buffs out all the time on my computer.

By Cazbob on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 2:25 pm:

Todd,

I live in Falls Church and work in Arlington.

Miko,

I have the CD single of Kid's Prayer. Definitely one of the "sensitive" songs I mentioned earlier.

By ScottN on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 - 3:04 pm:

I've got a DCI '78 mix...

Alright, Cazbob, we're practically neighbors!

By Cynical-Chick on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 11:36 am:

Thanks for the lyrics; they were great.

Although I hate country (this from a Tennessee girl!), I like the lyrics to that Alan Jackson song.

As for mixed cds, I'm trying to burn some (CD-RW on my comp; not going well, won't do it for my MP3s) I'm putting my MP3's on there (I bought a box of 20 blank cds):

Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, the Supremes, Weird Al, G. Dubya parodies I got on Napster, Madonna, Toni Braxton, Metallica, Doors, Enya, En Vogue, Police, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, etc.

Yes, I have VERY wide taste. I listen to anything and everything except country and teenypop.

I'm posting as anonymous because the answer may be "Yes."

By Benn on Thursday, February 28, 2002 - 2:32 pm:

I've got a new project I'm starting to get ready to put together. I admit it's a bit egocentric, but it ought to be interesting.

The project? A compilations of all the songs that were #1 hits (according to Billboard) the week of my birthday. I'm only using songs that were number one in my lifetime. There's a lot of songs I outright hate, but I'm still gonna include them.

Here's the list if anyone's interested:

1963 - "Hey, Hey Paula" - Paul and Paula
1964 - "I Want to Hold Your Hand" - The Beatles
1965 - "This Diamond Ring" - Gary Lewis and the Playboys
1966 - "These Boots Were Made For Walking" - Nancy Sinatra
1967 - "Kind of a Drag' - The Buckinghams
1968 - "Love Is Blue" - Paul Mauriet
1969 - "Everyday People" - Sly and the Family Stone
1970 - "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Simon and Garfunkel
1971 - "One Bad Apple" - The Osmonds
1972 - "Without You" - Harry Nilsson
1973 - "Killing Me Softly With His Song" - Roberta Flack
1974 - "Love Theme" - Love Unlimited Orchestra
1975 - "Pick Up the Pieces" - The Average White Band
1976 - "Theme From S.W.A.T."- Rhythm Heritage
1977 - "New Kid in Town" - The Eagles
1978 - "Stayin' Alive" - Bee Gees
1979 - "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" - Rod Stewart
1980 - "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Queen
1981 - "I Love a Rainy Night" - Eddie Rabbit
1982 - "Centerfold" - J. Geils Band
1983 - "Baby Come to Me" - Patti Austin with James Ingram
1984 - "Jump" - Van Halen
1985 - "Careless Whispers" - Wham! with George Michael
1986 - "How Will I Know" - Whitney Houston
1987 - "Living On a Prayer" - Bon Jovi
1988 - "Father Figure" - George Michael
1989 - "Straight Up" - Paula Abdul
1990 - "Opposites Attract" - Paula Abdul
1991 - "All the Man That I Need" - Whitney Houston
1992 - "To Be With You" - Mr. Big
1993 - "I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston
1994 - "The Power of Love" - Celine Dion
1995 - "Take a Bow" - Madonna
1996 - "One Sweet Day" - Mariah Carey and Boys II Men
1997 - "Wannabe" - Spice Girls
1998 - "My Heart Will Go On" - Celine Dion (And I really, really, REALLY HATE this song! Arrrrgh!)
1999 - "Believe" - Cher
2000 - "I Know I Loved You Before I Met You" - Savage Garden
2001 - "Stutter" - Joe & Mystikal
2002 - "Always On Time" - Ja Rule featuring Ashanti.

I've got a buddy checking his collection to see how many of these songs he has. The last twelve years are particularly bad. But if I'm gonna do the job right, they'll have to be included. If anyone wants to see what was number one on their birthday, here's a website to consult: http://www.hart87.freeserve.co.uk/us1.html

Now, if y'all excuse me, I'm going offline for the remainder of the day to celebrate my birthday. (Me & some friends later this evening will be going to Red, Hot & Blue, a great rib joint that plays the Blues. I can't wait!)

n.p. - Spectres - Blue Oyster Cult

By Benn on Thursday, February 28, 2002 - 8:03 pm:

Funny, the song I'm thinking of right now is "We're Not Gonna Take It."

And good luck with "Away In the Manger" and other public domain songs.

By ScottN on Friday, March 01, 2002 - 9:46 am:

Benn,

My posts as the RIAA were sort of a joke at the time, but it is serious.

See this.

By Benn on Friday, March 01, 2002 - 11:58 am:

Lovely. I wish I could find where I read it, but I've read an article about record companies' MP3 offerings being a bit of failure. Not only are very few people downloading songs from the companies, but the artists are getting screwed by the record companies themselves. It turns out that the artists are getting very little in royalties for each download. (And I thought the record companies were shutting down Napster to protect the artists.) (Please note the previous sentence should be read with considerable sarcasm.) Some acts have said they prefer Napster to what the record companies are doing.

By the way, Scott, I hope you weren't offended by my posts. I kind of half-suspected you were "The RIAA". Any comments I made were directed at "The RIAA" and not to you.

By ScottN on Friday, March 01, 2002 - 12:07 pm:

No sweat Benn. I knew that. BTW, you might try C|NET, or ZDNet for that article.

Actually, now that I think of it, your best best is Wired. I think I saw it there, too.

By Benn on Friday, March 01, 2002 - 1:24 pm:

I believe C|Net is where I originally read the article, Scott. Thanks.

By Miko Iko on Saturday, March 02, 2002 - 8:23 am:

Benn, not many people would be so devoted to a theme that they include songs that they aren't so crazy about. But to one-up that and include songs that you actually dislike, well...that takes somebody special! I'm not sure if I admire you or not :) (tell me how that Celine Dion situation works out and then I'll decide).

I found some videos recently of the Night Music shows (including the Son House performance, thankfully) and I've decided to use some of the audio tracks as a springboard to making a few compilation discs. [Mind you that my approach is different from Benn's- I only include songs that I would want to hear over and over again. If that means that I don't include a certain artist's "big song" then so be it.]

Anyway, I've got some great NRBQ performances, particularly an awesome "duet" with Phil Woods on "Little Floater". And then there's a really cool version of Pere Ubu doing "Waiting for Mary" with Louden WainrightIII and Debby Harry on backup vocals. So my latest projects will be individual NRBQ and Pere Ubu discs, I can't wait.

For the record, my Autumn and New York discs are made. I made the mistake of lending New York out to my brother and it took two months to get it back. I might make a 2 and 3 disc for New York to incorporate Jazz and other styles- I kept this one focused on the whole Greenwich and CBGB's thing. The set lists follow:

New York
1- Cities- Talking Heads
2- Rockaway Beach- Ramones

"Benn, not many people would be so devoted to a theme that they include songs that they aren't so crazy about. But to one-up that and include songs that you actually dislike, well...that takes somebody special! I'm not sure if I admire you or not (tell me how that Celine Dion situation works out and then I'll decide)." - Miko Iko

Yeah, I think it's a matter of being slightly insane. Seriously, though, to me it's a matter of doing it right. This is a project that has, unfortunately, some rigid standards built into it. I suppose that if I wanted to, I could reduce it to only songs I actually like. But then only the '60s, '70s and '80s would survive mostly intact. There'd be nothing from the '90s or this decade.

Interesting choices on your disc, Miko. For Autumn might I also suggest "Autumn" by the Edgar Winter Group and "Autumn Leaves" by Miles Davis? Or is the project quite finished?

I have to admit, I'm more familiar with the songs from your New York disc, though. I love Talking Heads' "Cities", The Ramones' "Rockaway Beach", The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale", Violent Femme's "Blister In the Sun" and The Smithereens' "Cut Flowers". Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" and "Waves of Fear" are good, but there are other songs I prefer by him - "Romeo Had Juliet", "Dirty Blvd." "Caroline Says", "The Original Wrapper", "Video Violence" and "Walk On the Wild Side" (duh!). But that's just me. (BTW, it's Lou Reed's birthday. He's 60 years old today.)

n.p. - Summer 1967 The Complete U.S. Concert Recordings (disc four) - The Monkees

By Benn on Saturday, March 02, 2002 - 12:51 pm:

Oh, about Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On", I've always thought of it as the "You Light Up My Light" of the Nineties. Now, if turned out that that song would also have made the list, not only would the project be abandoned, no one here would know of it! (It'd be very hard for me to say which song is worse.)

I'm pretty that whatever follows the tape/disc (whichever format it ends up in), when I play it, will probably the hardest rock I can find - Marylin Manson, The Sex Pistols, Ministry, nine inch nails - anything to cleanse the palate.

By Miko Iko on Sunday, March 03, 2002 - 6:15 am:

Benn, you hit on one of the "eternal truths of compilations" in your 1:38 post, that is- a compilation will never be judged by what it includes but by what it doesn't include. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla, I suppose...

The "doing the job right" thing is certainly admirable, but sometimes, as you also hinted at, you just gotta junk the whole idea. I sincerely hope you come up with something that you're proud of. As for myself, I can relate to the concept. A while back I wanted to make a tape of Country Classics, Old and New with the same set list on each side, only side A would be the originals, and side B would be the covers. Stuff like both Hank Williams and George Thorogood doing "Move It On Over", etc. Problem is, I had to go out and buy a lot of source material (fortunately the 45's were still available.)

Thanks for the suggestions, but those discs are already in the can. I did consider "Autumn Leaves" (by Bill Evans) but there were time constraints. I also like to hear the how segues work before comitting to a project, and that occasionally will redirect my thinking. A few examples from New York: I originally wanted to use the Smithereens' "In a Lonely Place" after Suzanne Vega because she sings backup on that one, but I didn't like the flow so I changed it at the last minute. Same thing with the Velvets' "Rock and Roll", which was supposed to be "Waiting for the Man".

And if you need anything cleansingly loud, just let me know.

I've been toying with a similar concept. What I'm wanting to do is take songs with the same title, though. On one side would be, say, "Bluebird" by Paul McCartney and Wings and on the other, "Bluebird" by Electric Light Orchestra. It's really a back burner idea, though.

As for my current project, it's on hold. I have to wait until I can get the following songs:

"Love Is Blue" - Paul Mauriet
"One Bad Apple" - The Osmonds
"I Love a Rainy Night" - Eddy Rabbit
"Careless Whispers" - Wham! with George Michael
"Livin' On a Prayer" - Bon Jovi
"Father Figure" - George Michael
"Straight Up" - Paula Abdul
"Opposites Attract" - Paula Abdul
"To Be With You" - Mr. Big
"My Heart Will Go On" - Celine Dion
"Believe" - Cher
"I Know I LOved Before I Met You" - Savage Garden
"Stutter" - Joe & Mystikal
"Always on Time" - Ja Rule featuring Ashanti.

Maybe later this year...

I'm sure I've got plenty that's cleansingly loud, but out of curiosity, whatcha got in mind?

By Todd Pence on Sunday, March 03, 2002 - 7:08 pm:

What about "Bluebird" by Robin Trower?

By Benn on Sunday, March 03, 2002 - 7:19 pm:

Uh, well, to begin with, I'm unfamiliar with it. And secondly, I was only tossing out an example. I'll have to see if one of my friends has that song on a tape or disc and give it a listen.

By Miko Iko on Monday, March 04, 2002 - 7:06 am:

It's a pretty cool tune from a much underappreciated Robin Trower album In City Dreams. Worth looking into.

I'm sure I've got plenty that's cleansingly loud, but out of curiosity, whatcha got in mind?

Well...since you asked, this is what I'd do--->
Pop the following into your disc player:
Zen Arcade- Husker Du
In Utero- Nirvana
Workbook- Bob Mould
The Land of Rape and Honey- Ministry
Pure- Godflesh
and program the following: (there's an absolutely brutal section of six songs on Zen Arcade that I've always loved, and using the program function allows you to increase it to seven, so let's start with that)
1- Indecision Time
2- Beyond the Threshold (this one's called "Beyond the Threshold"...and that's what it's about)
3- Pride
4- I'll Never Forget You
5- The Biggest Lie
6- What's Going On
7- Masochism World
Which should segue quite nicely into Nirvana's
8- Tourette's
9- Scentless Apprentice
Back to more bile spitting rage from Bob
10- Whichever Way the Wind Blows
and a classic from Ministry
11- Stigmata
and conclude with 20-odd minutes of total feedback
12-PureII

You should be sufficiently cleansed at this point.

By Benn on Monday, March 04, 2002 - 11:15 am:

Well, I do have In Utero and Land of Rape and Honey. However, if I were to pick a Ministry album, I'd probably go for Psalm 69. "Jesus Built My Hot Rod" is a hard song to beat.

Where Nirvana is concerned, it would depend on my mood. I like In Utero, but I think Bleach and Nevermind are better. Again, it'll depend on how I feel.

For me, other possibilities would include B.O.C.'s Heaven Forbid, Metallica's ...And Justice For All, Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast and/or Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced? There are more. I could put together a little something from various albums, though.

Since CD player in my car will play data CDs, I like to put a TON of songs on one disc and then press RANDOM. My latest disc is a bunch of post-1970 songs by each of the four solo Beatles. Actually, it works pretty well.

By ScottN on Tuesday, March 05, 2002 - 9:49 am:

If the RIAA and MPAA and Sen. Hollings (D-Disney D-SC) get their way, you won't be able to do that any more, goog.

By goog on Tuesday, March 05, 2002 - 5:41 pm:

Those parties, to my knowledge, are only interested in stopping file sharing, aren't they? Surely they're not trying to prevent me from making copies of my own CDs. I didn't say I downloaded the music; I just put the highlights from my solo Beatles collection onto one disc.

By ScottN on Tuesday, March 05, 2002 - 6:47 pm:

Surely they're not trying to prevent me from making copies of my own CDs.

Read up on the SSSCA. Also the DMCA. Why do you think that Vivendi/Universal plans to copy control all it's newly released CDs? (I refuse to use the term "copy protect").

By ScottN on Tuesday, March 05, 2002 - 7:00 pm:

Also, goog, read up on the DMCA, in particular Section 1201, where it discusses the penalties for circumventing copy control.

So, it's illegal to even try to copy that copy-controlled CD you just bought from Universal.

Tell your friends: "Think you own that CD you just bought? Think again, thanks to the DMCA."

By goog on Wednesday, March 06, 2002 - 12:05 am:

Okay, I see your point. I do feel the companies have a right to protect themselves against pirating, and that new technology requires new measures, but this is going too far.

re: cities

If I have the time I like to play my sets first before I make them, especially if I'm mixing genres, which can be tough. Usually I let the mood of a track be the determining factor, or sometimes I'll create an "arc", where one song leads into the next and so on, but the end doesn't really relate to the beginning. I did that for a world music disc that I made.

ScottN- I glanced through some of your earlier links and will look at the rest when I have the time. Thanks for the research. Does this also apply to making discs onto Audio CD-R's through one's stereo? The way it was explained to me, a few years back, was that the difference between the standard CD-R's and audio ones is that the audio ones include a fee that goes into a pool to be shared by the license holders. There are some downsides, like being limited to 80 minutes, but I think it's worth it. And the prices have gone down lately.

Benn- if you and I each made a Nirvana disc they would probably sound completely different, but I would enjoy listening to both. Not bad for a band that only released 4 studio albums (3 proper ones). I would focus on the other two :)

By ScottN on Wednesday, March 06, 2002 - 9:40 am:

In theory, Audio CD-Rs shouldn't be covered. Congressman Rich Boucher (R-VA) has pointed out that the record companies may be in violation of the law by preventing copying to audio CD-Rs because of the "RIAA tax". In addition, Phillips, maker of consumer audio CD-R burners, and holder of the patents on CD, and holder of the CD trademark has said that copy controlled CDs may not be marketed as "CDs". I.e., they may not use the CDDA logo. Philips calls them "silver disks that happen to contain music".

People, this is important stuff. Write your Congressman and/or Senator and tell them that you definitely do not support the proposed SSSCA. Ask them to work to repeal the DMCA. Ask them to restore your Fair Use rights.

Making mix CDs of stuff you own is Fair Use. Downloading and burning like that could be considered a copyright violation.

Author's Note: In general I think the RIAA is a bunch of idiots who want to take away all our rights.

By Sneak Preview on Thursday, April 11, 2002 - 12:49 pm:

Well, a lot of the stuff I like is from INDEPENDENT labels that you RIAA muthaf***ers keep out of the big stores like Media Play And Virgin Mega, but the point is, since they are from NON major labels, you're pirate label doesn't apply. Double check, and mate, sucka!

Pirates say, "Arrrrrr." Buccaneers say, "Avast Ye." I hope that clears up the confusion.

Bucc: What, if anything, does that have to do with my Discs?

By The Twisted World of Sven of Nine on Thursday, April 25, 2002 - 9:58 am:

I once made a compilation tape of old and (back then) current songs, and put some of them in the following order on one tape:

Radiohead - "Street Spirit (Fade out)"
The Levellers - "Hope Street"
The Cardigans - "Lovefool"
The Stone Roses - "Fool's Gold"
The Small Faces - "Itchycoo Park"
[among others]

Amazingly, they all (sort-of) flowed extremely well, one into the other - because they were all recordings in the same root chord - A (major or minor).

I even tried it out on the following songs whereby the chords change from intro to verse to chorus to end etc. and I found *this* combo also worked:

Roy Orbison - "I Drove All Night"
Air - "You Make It Easy"
Kraftwerk - "The Model"
Madness - "It Must Be Love"
Roxy Music - "Oh Yeah (on the radio)"

[In case anyone's wondering, I compiled this collection during a time when I found true love... for about one week... then wasted one year trying to find her. :( But I digress. Ahem.]

In most of the cases, the final chord of the song was almost the same as the opening of the next one (the Air/Kraftwerk I'll admit is more tenuous...). I think in future I may try this technique when making new compilation tapes. (For myself, I'll have you understand. :))

Well, we all know that after a break-up you can't listen to anything on the radio for 8 or 9 years.

Here's a song for you gusy out there whose girl has accused them of a plot SO complicated that not only didn't you do it, you weren't even mentally capable of thinking it up!

It's a song called You'll Be Alone For The Rest Of Your Life, from the album You'll Die Alone In A Puddle Of Your Own Urine In A Welfare Hospital!"

I'm not sure exactly where to put this.

I saw a commercial for inspirational "hits". You know Christian alternative or whatever it is called. If I log onto Napster or Kazaa can I steal them.:) (Gee, your honor, I love the LORD so much I had to steal those Bibles.:))

Now the House has passed the "Piracy Deterrent and Education Act (PDEA)". Makes certain instances of filesharing a felony.

Aren't you glad we have the best Congress that corporations can buy?
