If ONE is the loneliest number, then what about -1?

By Benn on Saturday, November 24, 2001 - 10:16 pm:

The story of my love life.

Thanks a lot, Butch, for that link to Where Were You.
I don't usually fancy sentimental country songs...but this one just brings those first few days after so clearly...too clearly...into focus. :(

By Butch Brookshier on Sunday, November 25, 2001 - 7:57 am:

You're very welcome. Glad to have been of service.

Here's A Kenny Loggins Christmas ...

Ridin' on your donkey
Listen to Mary travail some more
Joseph's under tension
Lookin' for an inn for sure

Highway to the Manger Zone
Ride into the Manger Zone

Headin' into the stable
Spreadin' out swaddling clothes
She got to deliver that new baby
Surrounded by sheep and goats

Highway to the Manger Zone
I'll take you right into the Manger Zone

After all these years, I just found out that Van Morrison does not open "Brown-Eyed Girl" with "Hey there, amigo"!

By Benn on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 - 7:43 pm:

LMAO! I thought the same thing, Goog! I still hear that way, too. Despite knowing the real lyrics.

By goog on Thursday, December 27, 2001 - 12:38 am:

Whew! Now I don't feel so bad. :-)

By Snickerdoodle on Thursday, December 27, 2001 - 1:13 pm:

But the second line to that song is "Braves won the A's game", isn't it?

By kerriem. on Friday, December 28, 2001 - 11:43 am:

From Train's Drops of Jupiter:

She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey hey hey...

So tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Can't quite decide whether that's genius or goofy...but I like it.

By Derf on Thursday, June 20, 2002 - 6:40 pm:

And now, the news ...
Today, it's been disclosed that Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle have confessed that they are responsible for the recent rash of pet store raids resulting in many breeds of canines being freed from local stores, confirming the rumour that The Who let the dogs out ...

Benn! Derf's got loose again!

By The men in white coats on Friday, June 21, 2002 - 7:12 pm:

Now, now, Mr. Derf. It'll be okay. There, there.

You're going to come with us, now...here, put on this jacket...yeah! That's right! You're going to come back with us! Uh-huh! The rubber room..yes, that's it...

"Benn! Derf's got loose again!" - kerriem

I'm gonna have to have a long talk with that boy at the next "North Texas Nitpickers Meeting". Whenever that'll be.

By Sven of the Black Report on Sunday, June 23, 2002 - 11:05 am:

Derf, don't you mean the World Health Organization?

By kerriem on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 - 7:44 pm:

Don't remember the exact song, but I have a soft spot for these lyrics of Jewel's:

Out of the corner of my eye -
Was that you
Passing me by...

Carried over from another board- the lyrics to Iain Matthews' "God's Empty Chair". There are a number of Miles Davis references within, but I'm not giving my count 'til Benn posts his :) And yes, the recorded song has a trumpet solo (quite nice one, too).

GOD'S EMPTY CHAIR (for Miles)
--------------------------
Well gold in the eyes of a rich man
Is pure joy and I guess that's okay
To me, joy is a warm and a muted horn
It's you, in a silent way

What if nobody suffered from heartaches?
If we never played music again
No Prez, no Bird, no nothing at all
No you and no sketches of Spain

Now all that I choose to remember
Is all you've decided to share
As surely as night is descending
On God's empty chair

And just when we thought it was over
When there's fear in the eyes of the fool
We were ready to say
Man let's call it a day
In you came with the birth of the cool

Oh how could I start to explain it
Just how long I've been humming that tune
Won't you turn and look over your shoulder
again
It's just me and I'm kinda blue

All that I choose to remember
Is all you've decided to share
As surely as night is descending
On God's empty chair
How surely the night has descended
On God's empty chair

Off hand, I see four references. All album titles. They are In a Silent Way, Sketches of Spain, The Birth of the Cool and Kinda Blue.

np - The Gentle Side of John Coltrane - John Coltrane

"It's all one song." - Neil Young

By MrPorter formerly Miko Iko on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 - 11:55 am:

Yeah, that's all I got as well, Benn. It seems that each verse is geared to end with an album title. The phrase "God's Empty Chair" comes from Kerouak's On the Road.

Along the same lines, here's Sweet Vine's 1997 tribute to Jim Croce entitled "Up To You". See how many Croce song titles and references you can find in these lyrics:

Whistle a melody in the Alabama rain
Speedball Tucker's truckin' down the road like a runwaway train
In a song you said
I leave it all up to you

Bleached blonde bombers and box number ten
Make up the love affair for the guy you don't mess around with
In a tale you said
I leave it all up to you

It's all up to you to let the people know what you're feelin' inside
When your day is through
I hope your lines weep gently without compromise

You sang of salon, sang of saloon
Hangin' on the lover's cross was the hard way every time for you
In a tale you said
I leave it all up to you

My day has come, your dawn is calling
The last drop of Alabama rain has fallen
Though I'm gone I'll say
I leave it all up to you
In a song I'll say
I leave it all up to you
On and on you've got to say
I leave it all up to you

By MrPorter on Thursday, August 28, 2003 - 9:49 am:

I'll claim the easy ones-

Alabama Rain
You Don't Mess Around With Jim
Speedball Trucker
Box #10
I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song
Saloon and Saloon

Other phrases stick out at me, though I can't place them at this time:

"I leave it all up to you " clearly comes from a lyric- they say as much- but it ain't coming to me right now.

There's probably at least 6 more, and of those I still can't find a Leroy Brown reference.
