Let's start with this;
One of my favorite songs is You're So Vain by Carly Simon.
Why is it, that song seems so appropriate for you, Brian Webber?
Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" is a classic song. Mick Jagger sings backup on it. And the way Mick sings it, though, it sounds like he's singing "You're so vine."
Anyone ever heard the version by Jack Klugman and Tony Randall?
Brian - we already have a whole lot of fun topics about songs, over in the Catch-Basin. Check it out.
(So I'm not sure why a Misc.Songs board in the first place?)
cazbob...I sincerely hope you're kidding. One of the secure foundations of my existence is that I will never, ever have to hear Jack Klugman sing.
I like You're So Vain, too. Apparently speculation ran rampant about the song's subject when it first came out - was it James Taylor (ex-Mr.Simon) or Warren Beatty? Or even Jagger, displaying a sense of humour nobody knew he had? Me, I'd go with the Beatty theory, myself. The lyrics just sound like a Hollywood star's excesses.
More recently I heard the chorus sampled in a Janet Jackson song. Fairly nifty...and maybe this is why it suddenly appears on Brian's list of favorites?
kerriem - Somewhere I have a novelty tune cassette with Oscar singing You're So Vain to Felix. It's pretty funny.
One can hear Jack Klugman "sing" on the original cast album of GYPSY. He goes toe-to-toe with Ethel
Merman on "You'll Never Get Away From Me" and "Together Wherever We Go." He was no Vaughn Monroe, but wasn't expected to be.
Fine. You can hear him. My secure existence is threatened and now I'm going to curl up in the corner with my hands over my ears.
(Not that I have anything against Klugman himself...other than a scary mental picture of Broadway tunes coming out of that face...anyway. I just basically cringe whenever non-singing stars suddenly start making like Caruso. Even had to turn the channel when those William Shatner Priceline commercials were on.)
kerriem--
Everyone had to change the channel when Shatner came on in those Priceline commercials
