Well, Columbia finally, finally, finally lived up on their promise to release her complete early recordings in a box, and a wonderful set it is, despite a couple omission. The sound is much improved over the earlier Quintessential series, plus there's a lot more music.
If anyone's interested, BIllie's "complete" box sets are as follows:
Columbia: 10 discs
Commodore: 2 discs
Decca: 2 discs
Verve: 10 discs
That's still not everything by her--it's not even all her studio recordings--but it's quite a lot. The only major recording not represented on those is the controversial Lady in Satin album, which is also on Columbia but of a much later vintage and available on a single disc.
God she was wonderful.
