We all have these people in our lives, that want us to be EXACTLY like them, like what thye like, na dhate what they hate. People like them (i.e. my dad) really get on my nerves. So let's talk about these doofuses.
I often find myself defending Garth Brook's Chris Gaines album. I'm also tire dof my dad mocking me for liking trip-hop. Pshaw! It's WAY better than that so-called Rap that gets played by the FM Shlockfests! But to him, Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, Trance, House, Techno, etc. is all the same thing. I tlel him, "Dad, that's like saying all Asian-Americans look alike." My dad's 'liberal' repsonse? "Well they do all look alike. Your music sucks. Deal with it."
Your dad sounds like a frumpy old numbskull. (forgive my slander) But if he'll just take a minute or two to listen to the music/words/whatever-it-was-that-turned-him-onto-the-music-he-likes-now he'll find that SOME hip-hop, SOME Rap, SOME R&B, SOME etc contains elements he can listen to and like!
I learned this lesson when my teenage daughter (way back in the early '90's) brought home an album called "C&C Music Factory: Gonna Make You Sweat". She played it in her room and I soon found myself stopping in front of her bedroom door for several minutes on end listening to the music! I eventually bought my own copy.
Hell, I even have a copy of Sir Mix-a-Lot!
I don't listen to Chris Gaines, but I'll be damned if I castigate YOU for doing it!
Personal fave: "90125" by Yes.
"She's So Unusual" by Cyndi Lauper
"Self Control" by Laura Brannigan
"Touch" by The Eurythmics
"Pac Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia
"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by The Eurythmics
Middle of Nowhere Hanson
Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life"
Uh, what's wrong with Songs In the Key of Life? I happen to have it on CD, myself. It's the only Stevie Wonder I own currently.
"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand." - Stevie Wonder
Nothing's wrong with the album. Forgive me, Benn. I've just gotten so used to so many people hating what I like.
In times past, whenever I used to play my favorite music in public, people looked at me like I was a freak or something.
Now I play my music inside all the time....alone.
Madonna's "Immaculate Collection"
That's not freakish either, John. What kind of people are you usually around?
Obviously the wrong people.
(Not counting the people at Nitcentral...they're fine)
IDEA: We should organize a "Nitcentral Convention" at a dining hall & meet each other & chat about our favorite nits. Phil Farrand would be the "guest speaker"
