Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Quiz Corner: Part 3
By Derf on Monday, April 22, 2002 - 6:49 am:

Match the song title with the artist/group

1. Misirlou______________The Tornadoes
2. You Never Can Tell_____Maria McKoo
3. Lonesome Town_______Dick Dale & His Del-Tones
4. Bustin' Surfboards_____Chuck Berry
5. If Love Is A Red Dress__Ricky Nelson

extra points if you can name the movie all these songs appeared in.

By Butch Brookshier on Monday, April 22, 2002 - 7:12 am:

Miserlou..........................Dick Dale & his Del-tones
You never Can Tell............Chuck Berry
Lonesome Town.................Ricky Nelson
Bustin' Surfboards..............The Tornadoes
If Love is a Red Dress..........Maria McKoo

A guess since I haven't seen it:Reservoir Dogs

By Derf on Monday, April 22, 2002 - 1:33 pm:

Nope ... a hint:

This movie won best picture at the Cannes Film Festival 1994 ... starred (among others) Bruce Willis, and was a film by by Quentin Tarrantino.

By ScottN on Monday, April 22, 2002 - 1:46 pm:

Pulp Fiction.

By Butch Brookshier on Monday, April 22, 2002 - 5:01 pm:

Darn, that was my other guess but it's been a while since I've seen it so I wasn't sure if all those songs were in it.

By Derf on Thursday, April 25, 2002 - 6:37 am:

Quiz: What do these four items have in common?
1. The liberty bell
2. A naked person
3. A serpent that squeezes the life from it's victims
4. Le Cirque Du Soleil

(hint: only #1 deals with a musical topic)

By cazbob on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 9:08 am:

Not sure how liberty bell fits in, but the other 3 stand for Monty/Python/(Flying)Circus.

By Butch Brookshier on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 9:46 am:

I think the opening Python music is The Liberty Bell March by Sousa.

By Derf on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 11:49 am:

The opening theme for Monty Python's Flying Circus is indeed Sousa's Liberty Bell (less the "fart" sound at the end) ... and I figured that Le Cirque Du Soleil (The Circus of the Sun) was the closest thing to a "flying" circus with an easily recognizable name. Congratulations, fellers!

By Anonymous on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 2:47 pm:

And the naked person?

By Derf on Friday, April 26, 2002 - 2:50 pm:

"the naked person" was answered by cazbob ...
(another way to say "completely naked" is "the Full Monty").

By Derf on Tuesday, April 30, 2002 - 5:59 pm:

Next quiz ...
Name the song/group from this snippet of lyrics:
You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
But don't listen to my replies
You say to me I don't talk enough
But when I do I'm a fool
These times I've spent, I've realized
I'm going to shoot through
And leave you

By Sven of Nine - Mad4It! on Wednesday, May 01, 2002 - 3:11 am:

Oooh! Oooh! I know this one!

It's "Unbelieveable" by E.M.F. - a classic from my own childhood.

By Sven of Nine, in the nick by the Spelling Police on Wednesday, May 01, 2002 - 3:16 am:

Sorry, that should be "Unbelievable" - the rest of the lyrics go:

The things, you say
Your purple prose just gives you away
The things, you say
You're unbelievable

By Derf on Wednesday, May 01, 2002 - 8:56 am:

Very correct, Sven ...
I collected this one on a '90's Greatest Hits CD.
There's another one on that CD I'll quiz you about:
Name the song/group
Lord I've really been real stressed
Down and out, losin ground
Although I am black and proud
Problems got me pessimistic
Brothers and sisters keep messin up
Why does it have to be so damm tuff?

By Derf on Thursday, May 02, 2002 - 1:42 pm:

Okay, a hint: This group's album (which contained the song in question) was titled 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days In The Life Of...

By Benn on Sunday, May 05, 2002 - 6:38 pm:

"Tennessee" by Arrested Development? (I've got the CD. I just have played it in eons.)

By Derf on Monday, May 06, 2002 - 7:16 am:

Correct, Senior Benn. You get the banana peel.

By MarkN on Monday, May 13, 2002 - 2:38 am:

Besides Dexy's Midnight Runners' Come On, Eileen, what other song mentions Johnny Ray and who sang it?

By Derf on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 4:24 pm:

I ain't gotta clue, but after a futile websearch, maybe ... JUS' maybe it's a song by The Sex Pistols? (couldn't find a name, but got referenced to the group by a Johhny/Johnnie Ray search)

For those of you just as lost by the above riddle, here's an easy quiz:

Name the group that offered these lyrics ...
(extra points for naming the songs refered to)

1. It was a hot summer night and the beach was burning
There was fog crawling over the sand
When I listen to your heart I hear the whole world turning
I see the shooting stars falling through your trembling hands

2. You'll never find your gold on a sandy beach
You'll never drill for oil on a city street
I know you're looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks
But there ain't no Coup de Ville
Hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box

3. Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

By ScottN on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 4:41 pm:

#3 -- Meat Loaf "Paradise By the Dashboard Light"

That brings back memories! When I was in college in St.Louis, we'd go to the midnite Rocky Horror showing, and they'd always show Tim Curry's "I do the Rock" and "Paradise Garage", and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" before the movie!

By Derf on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 8:02 pm:

MeatLoaf is the correct answer. Here are #1 and #2 ...
1. You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth
2. Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad

By MarkN on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 - 11:56 pm:

The answer to my question is Don't Need A Gun (Johnny Ray he's always crying) by Billy Idol.

By Derf on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 11:27 am:

Thanks MarkN ... I think The Sex Pistols got into it by Lycos latching onto Johnny Rotten ...

Here's a quiz for the brainiacs out there:

What does John Phillip Sousa and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier have in common?

By ScottN on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 12:53 pm:

"Row, Row, Row your boat"?
Marshmellons?

By Derf on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 1:06 pm:

No ... here's a quick hint: The common item is spoken/seen in the first few scenes of the movie.

By ScottN on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 2:08 pm:

The Laughing Vulcan and his Dog? :O

By Sven of Nine on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 2:20 pm:

"El Capitan"!!!

By Derf on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 3:48 pm:

Sven gets the fish!!!

JPS composed a march titled El Capitan ... and Kirk was attempting to free climb El Capitan at the beginning of the movie. Good job!!

By MarkN on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 10:27 pm:

You're welcome, Derf. Those two songs were the only ones I was aware of to mention Johnny Ray, and only then last week when I was listening to Billy Idol Greatest Hits.

By Cazbob on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 11:39 am:

New quiz!

Here is a list of numbers that come from lyrics of classic rock songs. Name the song and the artist. I believe that each of these numbers is unique to one song, but I could be wrong. Anyway, the songs I am looking for were all from the 60's or 70's.

262
1277
1352
30000
40000
100000

Good luck!

By Todd Pence on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 4:26 pm:

The first two are from Blue Oyster Cult. The 262 is from the song "ME-262" and the 1277 is from the song "Hot Rails To Hell" "1277 express to heaven"

By Cazbob on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 8:54 am:

Todd,

Correct so far. Anyone need a hint?

By Butch Brookshier on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 5:32 pm:

30000 is also from Blue Oyster Cult, "Don't Fear the Reaper".
'Another 30000 coming every day'

By Todd Pence on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 6:52 pm:

Methinks they might be all from BOC . . . I'm going to take a stab at the "40,000" it might be "40,000 faces/with their eyes turned toward the sky" from Mirrors' "The Vigil".

By Todd Pence on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 7:04 pm:

Actually, come to think of it, the "40,000" may be from "Reaper" and the "30,000" may be from "The Vigil". ("Thirty Thousand Years Ago") I'm just remembering the lyrics from memory.

By Butch Brookshier on Saturday, June 01, 2002 - 8:17 pm:

You're right, Todd, I mis-remembered the figure in the song.

By Benn on Saturday, June 01, 2002 - 10:52 pm:

Todd, the line in "The Vigil" is "Twenty seven faces (faces)/With their eyes turned to the sky." (See http://www.blueoystercult.com/Studio-main.html The other verse is "Many thousand years ago."

"30,000" could refer to "Stairway to the Stars": "Go can drive my motorcar/It's insured to thirty thou (30,000)".

"1352" I thought might have been from "Magna of Illusion" from B.O.C.'s Imaginos album, however...

All of this assumes that Caz is referencing B.O.C., of course.

By Cazbob on Sunday, June 02, 2002 - 3:43 am:

Sorry, but only 3 were BOC songs. ME262, Hot Rails to Hell (1277), and The Reaper (40000).

Hints:
1352 comes from a great 60's band that had a million hits, even though they existed for only a few years.
30000 is from a soft rock songwriter. The number is in the title of the song.
100000 is from the first group I ever saw in concert, in 1977. They were hot stuff then. They also had a very successful tour not too long ago. The number is in the title for this one too.

By Benn, who did admittedly cheat on Sunday, June 02, 2002 - 4:17 am:

"30000" is "30,000 Pounds of Bananas" by Harry Chapin.

The "100,000" is "100,000 Years" by KISS.

By Cazbob on Sunday, June 02, 2002 - 4:43 am:

OK, that leaves only 1352. In the same song, another unique number is mentioned - 16,821. The leader of the group played at Isle of Wight in 1970.

That should give you enough to work with.

By Benn on Sunday, June 02, 2002 - 4:58 am:

I can only guess at who the act you're refering to is, Caz. It's gotta be the Jimi Hendrix Experience. (Well, it doesn't have to be...)

By Cazbob on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 7:20 am:

No, it's not Jimi.

OK, I'll spoon feed you one final clue. The 16,821 refers to mothers and the 1352 refers to guitarists.

Are you lovin' this quiz yet?

By Butch with the light finally going on over his head on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 5:49 pm:

"Nashville Cats" by The Lovin' Spoonfull

By Cazbob on Tuesday, June 04, 2002 - 4:19 am:

"There's 1352 guitar pickers in Nashville,
And they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennesee anthill."

This concludes out little numerical quiz. We now return you to your regular program.

By Todd Pence on Thursday, June 20, 2002 - 5:29 pm:

Name the three songs which appear in the soundtracks for both of the seventies retro-films "Dazed And Confused" and "The Stoned Age".

By CC on Thursday, June 20, 2002 - 10:22 pm:

Guess: "Dazed and Confused," Zep.

By Benn on Saturday, June 22, 2002 - 10:40 pm:

I'm gonna guess Foghat's "Slow Ride", Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and Deep Purple's "Highway Star". But I haven't seen The Stoned Age in a long time. (I need to get it on DVD.) And I have never seen Dazed and Confused. (I'm looking at the listing for the CD on CDNow's website.)

n.p. - Bigger, Better, Faster, More - 4 Non Blondes, specifically "What's Up?" I still like that song.

By Benn on Saturday, June 22, 2002 - 10:42 pm:

I was gonna post a quiz meself, but I'll wait 'til Todd's has been answered.

"25 years of my life and I'm still/Trying to get up that great big hill/Of hope/For a destination."

By Todd Pence on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 5:40 pm:

Benn you nailed it. Pretty good for not having seen one of the movies. And, CC, believe it or not, "Dazed And Confused" is not in the film that bears its name - probably because Zeppelin charges so much for the rights to their songs that it's not feasible for low-budget films like these to use them. Actually, Stoned Age was supposed to center around Zeppelin rather than BOC (and "Stairway To Heaven" was the "p....y song" instead of "Reaper") but they found out it would cost too much to get the rights to "Stairway".

By Benn on Friday, July 12, 2002 - 10:19 am:

I didn't that about The Stoned Age, Todd. Zeppelin, actually makes more sense than Blue Oyster Cult, to be honest.

Now for my quiz. It's a long one. On other boards I've mentioned a Dr. Demento song called "Rock Rap" by Whimsical Will (again, Whimsical Will is Billy Sampson, the voice of Spock as a boy in the animated Trek ep, "Yesteryear".) What you see below are the lyrics to the song. The quiz? By my count 203 music acts are mentioned in the lyrics.
Some are very blatant. Your task, to find all 203 acts. And please try doing it without going to All Music Guide, or other such websites. It is fairly easy.

“Rock Rap”

I lived on level 42 of my Wadsworth mansion in the Frankie Valley for four seasons, in exile from the general public. It’d been an icehouse lately as that motley crew at Pacific, Gas and Electric hadn’t been by to fix our canned heat or ac/dc since last Donna summer.

There were men at work on the foundations and brass construction. And the carpenters’ cutting crew had removed five stairsteps from our spiral staircase. And spiro gyros is going through the doors.

It was a crowded house, ‘cos I had more animals than the pet shop boys. Besides from my cats Steven and bow wow wow, Toto, I’d taken in such beastie boys as John the cougar, Eddie the rabbit and Adam the ant. And they were fat boys too, as the monkeys ate all my banana-rama, the birds ate bread. And while the stray cats drank the cream, my Steppen wolf devoured the meatloaf and the turtles ate the ambrosia and peaches and herb.

The deaf leopard was going after the glass tiger. And my white snake was attacking the chipmunks who were chasing the beetles right into the rat poison, when I got a sting from the scorpions, wasp and killer bee, jeez.

Yes, it was the time to journey on. I was in dire straits and there was no cure for the moody blues and quiet riot inside me. I’d given 10cc of blood, sweat and tears for fear. And I wasn’t sure if I was dead or alive, although I’d’ve been grateful dead. But thanks to Dr. John, Dr. Hook and Dr. Demento, I’m a survivor!

But I was afraid I’d become an Eric burden on my mamas and papas, my doobie brothers and my twisted sister. They didn’t have the knack or heart for my madness.

So I set my strawberry alarm clock for dawn one Sharday and went to see the singing nun to practice my blind faith. Now I believe in Genesis, Nazareth, Madonna, Peter, Gabriel, Judas Priest. And I try to rest on black Sabbath. And I always wear my Jesus and Mary chain.

My supreme temptation to become a drifter had me in a rush to go go. I put on my simply red new shoes, cuff links, zee zee top, golden earring and shocking blue chiffon. But my James, tailor, said my psychedelic furs would clash with my pink Floyd. And although I’m usually one of the men without hats, I put on my deep purple fog hat top hide my crew cuts. Hey! You never know when a loverboy like me might run-dmc into a concrete blonde or iron maiden at a procol harem.

There was moon glow and a midnight star as I set out ready for the world. It was a three-dog night in the middle of Edgar winter. There was a steel breeze in the air supply. At no more than three degrees, it was too chili whack for the crickets.

If Frankie goes to Hollywood, then I could venture from the sticks to Chicago or Kansas or Boston or Alabama. I could take the Jefferson airplane, one of the jets, to Europe to visit the King’s men and Queen, Prince and Napoleon the Fourteenth. Or I could take the Grand Funk railroad from Brownsville station with a Manhattan transfer to Black Oak Arkansas. Or I could take a Pablo cruise past the Edison lighthouse to Asia. Or I could fly a lead zeppelin or iron butterfly to Berlin where the new edition of the paper lace has an expose on the war – with b52s and u2s!

Or I could see grass roots America, this big country, in one of the cars at Mike and the mechanics’ place. My r.e.o speedwagon has bachman, turner overdrive and my van halen has a stealer’s wheel. That’s why the police pulled guess who? over and said, “Aha!” And my cadillacs has Stevie nicks and my Capri's hooters need work.

Instead, I’ve been keeping bad company as I joined the Blue Oyster cult and was a beach boy lying on the stry sand, waiting for the Creedence Clearwater revival. Then I was a Herman’s hermit, a Super-tramp, a missing person, barely a talking head, living off the rare earth, wind and fire and drinking April wine from dixie cups, coasters and platters.

Then I joined the human league to learn the undisputed truth as member of the Culture Club, Club Nouveau, the Tom Tom club, the Timex Social club. Even the Breakfast Club, At least 'til Tuesday.

I live in the motels, eating electric prunes, red-hot chili peppers and Fleetwood Big Macs. A pretender with a simple mind. And the moral of the story is… a rolling stone can sure mess up his life!

If you'd like to hear it (in Real Audio), just go to http://www.concentric.net/~Whmsicl/DementedNews.html I'm pleased to say, Whimsical Will even mentions my name.

Have fun.

In order to help ressurect the quiz Benn posted weeks ago, here's an easy one ...

Name the group/song title

But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door

By Butch Brookshier on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 7:22 pm:

Derf, you're here! I thought you had gone off. I was getting worried.

Oh, I have no idea what the song or artist is.

By Hannah F. (Cynicalchick) on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 7:44 pm:

I know this one, Derf. Yet another one-hit wonder...

"Five Hundred Miles," Thomson Twins, isn't it?

By Derf on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 9:17 pm:

They may have been named "Thomson" ... but their billing was "The Proclaimers". The ACTUAL title was "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" ...

By Hannah F. (Cynicalchick) on Friday, August 02, 2002 - 10:25 pm:

Proclaimers, that's right.

There WAS a one-hit wonder named the Thomson Twins, though...

(Yeah, I watch a lot of VH1.)

By Derf on Saturday, August 03, 2002 - 1:37 pm:

The only song I could scratch up off the net that made anyones list from The Thomson Twins was "Hold Me Now" ...
I also found a CD from them titled "Greatest Mixes" released in 1991 containing the following tracks:
1. In The Name Of Love '88
2. Lies
3. Love On Your Side
4. Lay Your Hands On Me
5. The Dap
6. Hold Me Now
7. Doctor, Doctor
8. You Take Me Up
9. King For A Day
10. Get That Love

If you're at all interested, here is a site for The Thomson Twins ... The Thomson Twins

(Never again will I post a quiz this big. Never!)

By Derf on Friday, September 06, 2002 - 11:51 am:

Next quiz ... name the group/song this lyric is found:

I was stumblin' through the parking lot
Of an invisible 7-11

By Derf on Friday, September 06, 2002 - 6:36 pm:

BTW, Benn ... HOW on God's green earth can you ask a music quiz that has OVER 200 answers!!!? ... (I mean ... really!!) It's a brain frizz just to answer ONE!!

By Benn on Saturday, September 07, 2002 - 12:52 pm:

True. But the answers were right in front of everyone. That is they were in the text of the song's lyrics. I thought that might help. Guess I was wrong.

By Sven of Nine on Saturday, September 07, 2002 - 2:35 pm:

It was a good quiz, though. Similar to the effort going on at the moment to identify all 101 intros in the epic 12-minute bootleg track "Intro-Inspection" by the mysterious but devilishly good OSYMYSO.

I got as far as 90.

By Benn on Saturday, September 07, 2002 - 3:15 pm:

You mean someone was working on answering the quiz? Wow. If I'd'a known, I wouldn't have posted the answers. I thought everyone was discouraged by the number of answers required to even attempt it? Of the 90, Sven, how many were right? Which ones did you get?

By Sven of Ninety out of 101 on Saturday, September 07, 2002 - 6:15 pm:

Oh, no, I wasn't referring to your quiz, Benn - I was referring to this 12-minute track I stumbled upon one day.

By Benn on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 1:05 am:

Never mind.

By Derf on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 12:40 pm:

name the group/song this lyric is found:

I was stumblin' through the parking lot
Of an invisible 7-11

Hint #1: another verse from the song ...
Last night I saw a naked cowgirl
She was floating 'cross the ceiling

By ScottN on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 1:54 pm:

Group is ZZ Top. I can't remember the song... I'll have to drag out my "Greatest Hits" CD.

By Derf on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 4:29 pm:

The song is ...
My Head's In Mississippi

I was shufflin' thru the Texas sand ...
But my head's in Mississippi

BTW ... ZZ Top IS the correct answer)

By Derf on Sunday, September 08, 2002 - 4:40 pm:

Not to underplay other ZZ Top hits such as:
Gun Love
Pearl Necklace
Viva Las Vegas
Tush
I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
Sharp Dressed Man
Cheap Sunglasses
Gimme All Your Lovin'
La Grange

By Derf on Tuesday, October 08, 2002 - 6:21 pm:

Name the song/group that sings it:

I woke up this morning with a bump on my head
An empty corral and a stone cold bed
Well, all of my livestock was nowhere in sight
She took all of my horses when she left me last night

She cut me off at the roots when she took my best boots
I'm hung over, and barefoot and alone
You know I can't blame her, try as I might
She took all of my horses when she left me last night

She rode off by moonlight and cut through the fences
Looks like somebody's done come to her senses
You know I can't blame her, try as I might
She took all of my horses when she left me last night

Too much time on the range and too much time at the bar
She warned me and warned me, but I took it too far
The whiskey was wrong, and the woman was right
She took all of my horses when she left me last night

By Derf on Saturday, November 09, 2002 - 6:30 pm:

The Refreshments recorded the above song titled "Horses" ... a "refreshing" country-western style tune from the rock group.

Next quiz ...
Name the song and group that sang it from this snippet of lyrics ...

Now I know you're not
The only starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again
It's all the same to me

extra points for naming the person credited with writing the song ...

By Benn on Saturday, November 09, 2002 - 11:44 pm:

Given that we talked about this on AIM, Derf, I'm afraid I'm disqualified from giving the answers to this one.

By Derf on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 5:01 am:

Thanks for your input, Benn ... it made for a much better quiz question than the one I had planned.

By Derf on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 9:16 pm:

How-evah, 'ole buddy ... looks like you might be de only one dat can answer da quiz! ('jus frum folks not lookin' in on quizzes now and den, I 'spoze)

By Benn on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 7:11 pm:

Thanks to you, Derf, that song's been circling around in my head. Bouncing around like a rubber ball.

By Derf on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 - 7:10 pm:

Nice clues ... Benn!!!

By Derf on Thursday, November 14, 2002 - 5:05 am:

Hint:
I think it's going to be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining
Like a
___ ______ ____

If folks can't answer this one, they'd be RED with embarrassment! (Either that, or I'm gettin' too dern old!)

By Benn on Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 9:22 pm:

We're both must be gettin' too old, Derf. Time for us to start posting on the Retirement Home board in The Kitchen Sink. Of course, I never heard the song in question 'til the Seventies when I heard it on KFJZ. (Remember that station on your AM dial?)

Anyway, the answers to Derf's quiz is "Red Rubber Ball" by The Cyrkles, co-written by Paul Simon. Funny, I remember there being a discussion of that song on one of these boards...

Now for another quiz. This one involves cartoons. Warner Brothers cartoons. One in particular: "Ducking the Devil". For those to whom the title's unfamiliar, "Ducking the Devil" is the one where the Tazmanian Devil has escaped from the zoo. There's a big reward for Tazzy's capture.

Daffy Duck decides to collect the reward. As he says at the end of the cartoon, "I may be a coward, but I'm a greeedy little coward."

Daffy learns that music can render the Tazmanian Devil docile. So Daffy tries playing the radio, a trombone and bagpipes. Nothing works. Then Daffy starts singing to Taz.

Here's the quiz, Daffy sings five songs to the Tazmanian Devil. What are those five songs? If you don't know the titles, just give me the lines Daffy sings. In order, please.

By Derf on Sunday, November 17, 2002 - 5:38 pm:

Here's the low-down on "Ducking the Devil" ...
Release Date: 8/17/1957
Starring: Daffy Duck & Tasmanian Devil
Synopsis: Daffy trys to snare the Tasmanian Devil for a $5,000 reward. He has one weapon against the duck-devouring brute: as the radio says, the Devil "becomes docile when exposed to music." Daffy is ten miles from the zoo, and has to keep coming up with music to lure the Devil there. First he tries a radio, which is no good as the cord gives out, then he purchases a trombone from one of those cartoon mail order firms that delivers a few moments after the order is dropped in the mailbox. The slide goes shooting away from Daffy too quickly. So, he starts singing, beginning with "Tourjours, Lamour," then "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover" and "Carolina in the Morning," but ten miles is a long time to keep singing and walking. By the time they're only a mile away, Daffy's hoarse voice can barely croak "When Irish Eyes are Smiling." (Taz, however, is totally in the spirit, sporting a clay pipe!) Finally approaching the Devil's cage at the zoo, Daffy's voice gives out on "Moonlight Bay." He revives it with an atomizer just long enough to slam the door on the beast. He then goes to collect his reward, happily counting and passing the Devil's cage. A dollar bill slips from his hand and Taz's hand grabs the bill. Daffy goes in and fights for it, emerging triumphant, with the torn bill in hand. "I may be a coward," gloats Daffy, "but I'm a greeeedy little coward!"

I hope that by answering this quiz question, I'll be equal with you, my local hero who answered my last question! (I remember this cartoon, just couldn't remember the tunes sung by Daffy!)

By Benn on Monday, November 18, 2002 - 3:30 pm:

Well, Derf, congratulations! You got it right.

|Drags a dusty box out to center stage. Blows a massive cloud of dust from the top of box. Opens the lid of the box, which whines and moans in protest of being put to a use for which it is long out of practice. A couple of moths and a bat fly out of the open box.|

You get your choice of a prize from the Nitcentral Music Toy Box! Enjoy!

By Derf on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 4:54 pm:

Okay! ... I'll take the rubber snake and the joy buzzer!

By Sven of Nine, a porn star, and a fish on Tuesday, November 19, 2002 - 4:58 pm:

Please don't tell us what you intend to do with those items... :O :O :O

By Derf on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 5:08 pm:

Next quiz ...
The topic is musical "duos" ... List the GROUP name of the following "first" names of the band members:

1. Phil and Don
2 Dick and Tom
3 Paul and Art
4. Daryl and John
5. Bono and Bono
6. Lester and Earl

By ScottN on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 5:16 pm:

1. The Everly Brothers
2. The Smothers Brothers
3. Simon and Garfunkle
4. Hall and Oates
5. I want to say Sonny and Cher, but that's backwards. U2?
6. No clue.

By Benn on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 - 5:19 pm:

Number 6 is Flatt and Scruggs. Famous for "The Ballad of Jed Clampett".

Bono is not U2. But it might be Sonny and Cher.

By ScottN on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 12:17 am:

Except Bono wasn't Sonny or Cher's "first" name.
However, I expect that #5 is Sonny and Cher, and Derf just kind of kludged it to fit.

By Benn on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 2:31 am:

"Except Bono wasn't Sonny or Cher's 'first' name." - ScottN

True. I didn't think about that, Scott. If it's not Sonny and Cher, I have no idea who #5 is.

Incidentally, ignoring the fact that U2 isn't a duo, their lineup is Bono Vox (Paul Hewson), The Edge (Dave Evans), Adam Clayton and Larry Mullens, Jr.

By Derf on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 5:02 am:

Nice to see switching Sonny and Cher's name around sparked so much confab (had to, if the clue was "Sonny and Cher", the answer was the same ... sort of a trick question)

By ScottN on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 9:45 am:

So do Benn and I get to pick toys?

By Derf on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 11:21 am:

Sure ... just be apprised that the rubber snakes and joy buzzers are on order.

Speaking of Phil and Don ... can anyone name the song that these first names were used in?
(extra points automatically awarded since the person(s)/group writing the song is immediately evident)

By Benn on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 5:30 pm:

"Let 'Em In" - Wings?

By Derf on Friday, November 22, 2002 - 1:27 am:

Quite correct, Benn ... grab an extra toy while you're perusing the toy box.

By ScottN on Friday, November 22, 2002 - 9:26 am:

Ohhh! Look, an ORIGINAL Captain Midnight Decoder Ring!

By Benn on Saturday, November 23, 2002 - 7:07 pm:

Oh cool!! There's a Freddy the Flute! Just like the one I ordered from Kellogg's cereal when I was a kid! Gimme!

By Witchiepoo on Saturday, November 23, 2002 - 7:10 pm:

Orson! Seymour! Get my Vroom-Broom ready! We gotta get that magic golden flute!

By Benn on Monday, November 25, 2002 - 2:42 am:

Okay, so new quiz:

We're all familiar with the Doors' song, "L.A. Woman", right? In it Jim Morrison intones the phrase "Mr. Mojo Risin'". Does anyone know what is the significance of that phrase is? What it means?

By Cazbob on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 - 8:15 am:

Mr. Mojo Risin is an anagram of Jim Morrison.

By Benn on Thursday, November 28, 2002 - 5:35 am:

Congratulations Caz, you get to pick a prize from the Music Board Toy Box!

|Pushes the box towards Cazbob.|

By Cazbob on Monday, December 02, 2002 - 5:28 am:

Thanks Benn. Let's see that toy box. Hmmmn... I think I'll take this one. I'm not sure what it is, but it goes "Zip" when it moves and "Bop" when it stops. It even goes "Whirrr" when it stands still. I think I'll give it to my son for Christmas.

By Benn on Monday, December 02, 2002 - 4:37 pm:

Wow! That was in the box?! I haven't seen one of those in... since... Gawd, it has been awhile!

Well, Caz, I hope your son likes it. Those things are pretty rare. I imagine you can get a pretty good price for it off eBay.

Enjoy!

By ScottN on Monday, December 02, 2002 - 5:25 pm:

I hope you learn just what it is, but I guess you never will!

By Benn on Tuesday, December 03, 2002 - 2:23 am:

C'mon, Scott. I thought by now everyone knew what it was.

By Derf on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 5:25 am:

Next quiz …
Name the artist and the tunes these snippets of lyrics belong:

1) Who's that knocking on the door
It's gotta be a quarter to four
Is it you again, coming 'round for more

2) You stole my soul and that's a pain I can do without

3) His lips are dry, her heart's gently pounding
Don't you just know exactly what they're thinking

4) Her adlibbed lines were well rehearsed

5) Kick off your shoes and sit right down

6) I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone who's torn it apart

By ScottN on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 7:51 am:

2) Rod Stewart, "Maggie"

By Derf on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 10:26 am:

Rod Stewart is correct, ScottN, but my album cover says the title to the song is Maggie May ...

That leaves 5 other titles by Rod to be filled in.

By The Return of Snickerdoodle! on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 12:43 pm:

1, "Hot Legs"
3, "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"
4, "You're In My Heart"
6, "First Cut Is The Deepest"

5...hmm...

By Miko Iko on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 1:28 pm:

5: "Tonight's the Night" ?

By Derf on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 1:32 pm:

Snickerdoodle ... CONGOMULATIONS!!
You've nailed them all! (except for #5, of course)

However, title #4 is listed on my album cover as You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) ...

Here are a few more lines from #5 ...
Kick off your shoes and sit right down
Loosen up that pretty French gown
Let me pour you a good, long drink
Ooh baby, don't ya hesitate

By Derf on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 1:33 pm:

Miko Iko ... that's a BIG Yepper!!!

By Snickerdoodle on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 1:51 pm:

So who gets to do the next quiz? The first to answer, the one who answered most, or the one who finished the question correctly? :-D

By Derf on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 10:17 am:

To make a "fairly" fair reply, since Snickerdoodle answered the MOST, can go first. Then ScottN who answered the earliest, and last (but not least) Miko Iko with the answer to the stumper.

(Hope I did that right)

By Snickerdoodle on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 12:42 pm:

Okay, here we go. Artist and Songs, please.

1. "I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark"

2. "Broken glass of my mirror
Makes my eyes see much clearer"

3. "Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand
I search for the time
On a watch with no hands"

4. ""Sell me sell you" the porpoise said
Dive down deep to save my head
You...I think you got the blues too."

By Derf on Monday, March 24, 2003 - 10:11 pm:

Okay, I'll start the answer session …
1) Alone - Heart

By Miko Iko on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 - 8:45 am:

4) "Barracuda"- Heart

Thanx for the clue, Derf

By Miko Iko on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 - 8:48 am:

3) "These Dreams"- Heart

Dunno 2 (yet), but it seems pretty clear who it's by...

By Snickerdoodle on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 - 10:32 am:

Excellent, Derf and Miko!

Still got #2 left...

By Derf6217 on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 10:04 am:

Okay, my guess for #2 is ...
Strangers of the Heart - Heart

(but I cheated and used LyricFind.com to dig up the title ... thanks for the cerebral cortex stumper, Snickerdoodle!)

By Snickerdoodle on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 12:26 pm:

Righto!

And I forgive ya, Derf, it was tough.

So, ScottN gets the next one?

By ScottN on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 12:58 pm:

I'll post one or two in a little bit...

By ScottN on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 1:06 pm:

OK, try these on for size.

1. Well the blaze and noise boy,
he's gunnin' that bitch
loaded to blastin' point

2. And if we blow this one
They ain't gonna be looking for just me this time

3. Queen of diamonds, ace of spades
Newly discovered lovers of the Everglades
They take out a full-page ad in the trades
To announce their arrival

4. Well, I'm just a lonely acrobat
the live wire is my trade

By Butch the Baffled K Man on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 5:52 pm:

Derf, this is up to 107k.
I have no idea on any of the lyrics.

By Derf on Friday, April 04, 2003 - 11:09 pm:

Butch, Ole Boy, YOU can start part 4 as easy as I CAN! (but since you requested it ... okay, dude!)
