Discs 45, 46, and 47 coming soon!

C'mon am I the ONLY one making these things anymore? The first board got huge, but this one is dead as a doorknob.

By Todd Pence on Saturday, July 27, 2002 - 9:06 pm:

Well, I've recently put together a 2-CD compilation of my personal choices for the most gorgeously beautiful songs in classic rock history - 40 tracks on two CDs. This originally began life ten years ago as a 90-minute tape compilation inspired by a friend's suggestion that he'd like to hear someone make a comp tape of the greatest slow songs ever made. Although I've of course added more songs as I was exposed to more bands and the CD format permitted for more room, most of the basic track lineup from that original compilation remains unchanged. If anyone's interested, I'll post the track listings and people can agree or disagree with my choices.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, July 27, 2002 - 10:58 pm:

Ack! I Dumped the two messages from RIAA guy and Brian Webber that originally appeared before Todd's post and forgot to note it here.

By BrianW ebber, Overreacting on Monday, July 29, 2002 - 5:30 pm:

What? Why? Me and the guy who posted as The RIAA were just mocking this whoel DMCA thing. They do it all the time at PM and nobody deletes those. I wasn't aware mocking a Senate Bill counted as ad hominem. I guess we can't make fun of insects anymore eithger? And what about pens? Oh no, what if someone says, "My •••••• pen ran out of ink"? It'll be sent to the Dump!

AAGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, July 29, 2002 - 6:50 pm:

Matt,

Speaking on behalf of the person who posted as the RIAA (namely, me), I would have to say that Mr. Webber interpreted me correctly.

I was attempting some political commentary in response to "am I the ONLY one...".

The Fine Print:
Disclaimer: I do not work for the RIAA, nor do I work for any of its member companies. I posted as the RIAA for political/satirical commentary purposes only.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 - 1:33 am:

Okay, Scott, you possibly have a point. I can't really bring myself to interpret Brian's response as acceptable, though. Even though it was joking, and I understood it to be so at the time, it went *way* over the top.

By Anonymous on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 - 2:11 pm:

Guys,

It does not matter if what you are doing is legal. It doesn't matter if during the investigation you are completely OKed. The investigation itself is a female dog. By posting those lists you've given a grand jury probable cause to let RIAA investigate any claims as to ownership of those songs.

Derf,

I may be paranoid, but I'm serious. Delete this board before it is found.

(Yeah, I know they can figure out who I am, but why make it easy on them? BTW, "they" exist. I may sound paranoid, but their is an antecedant for that pronoun.)

By Todd Pence on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 - 3:08 pm:

I just want to say for the record that any compilations I've ever made have all been from commercially released CDs that I've bought and paid for.

By Brian Webber on Monday, December 16, 2002 - 4:45 pm:

I think Anonymous mya be right (now). Just go ahead and sh!t can this board and the other one before anybody (me) gets into trouble.

By Sparrow47 on Monday, December 16, 2002 - 7:09 pm:

So, I was looking over those lists you had posted, Brian. Two questions:

You're aware that it's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," right? You had "As My Guitar Gently Weeps." Also, does "The Fall of Terok Nor" have anything to do with what I think it does?

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 11:22 am:

Let me address thhose points in order.

1: My bad, sorry.

and 2: The title of the song refers, of course, to DS9, but the song has absolutely NOTHING to do with the station, Captain Sisko, or anything Trek like.

By Sparrow47 on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 9:14 am:

So, in other words, it's a song about Trek that isn't about Trek? Uh... 'k.

By Brian Webber on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 7:09 pm:

Oh don't act so confused. It's not as if that's the firt time the title of the song had absolutely nothing to do with the actual song.

By Anonymous #228 on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 7:35 pm:

The "firt time"?

By Sparrow47 on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 7:35 pm:

This is true. However, I'd be remiss in my duty as a Nitpicker if I didn't call 'em on it. :)

By Benn on Wednesday, February 05, 2003 - 11:40 pm:

I think I mentioned elsewhere that I was wanting to put together a series of tapes or CDs of songs that were no. 1 on my birthday. Disc one has been created. The series is called In My Life. To determine what songs were number one on my birthday through the years, I'm using these websites: http://www.8ball.com/t40tunes/byyear.html and http://www.hart87.freeserve.co.uk/us1.html The first site was consulted for disc one. Where the two lists differ, I'll make a note. Disc one was made at my sister's, so I did not have access to the second site. Nonetheless, where the two lists differ, I'll make note of it. On disc one are the following cuts:

1963 - "Walk Right In" - The Rooftop Singers

Overall, I'm going by Billboard's charts. Frankly, this isn't the song Billboard lists as being the top song of the land the day I was born. "Hey Paula" by Paul and Paula is. However, the website I used, for the first ten years, lists other number one songs, compiled, I believe, from other charts.

"Walk Right In" was one of the other songs listed. It's probably the earliest pop song I can remember hearing and liking. I still like it. And since I'm not that fond of "Hey Paula"...

Tempting as it was, this is the only time I knowingly deviated from the Billboard charts.

1964 - "I Want to Hold Your Hand" - The Beatles

Not my favorite Beatles song, but it's still cool one of their songs was number 1 on my first birthday. Plus this song marks the first time that someone who is the same zodialogical sign as I am appears on these disc. George Harrison was a fellow Pisces. (His last album, Brainwashed had a song on it called "Pisces Fish". )

1965 - "This Diamond Ring" - Gary Lewis and the Playboys

1966 - "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" - Nancy Sinatra

1967 - "Kind of a Drag" - The Buckinghams

1968 - "Love Is Blue" - Paul Mauriet

1969 - "Everyday People" - Sly and the Family Stone

Sly Stone is another Piscean.

1970 - "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Simon and Garfunkel

1971 - "One Bad Apple" - The Osmonds

Not the worst song on this, or any of the other discs. Actually, it's not bad.

1972 - "Without You" - Nilsson

1973 - "Killing Me Softly (With His Song)" - Robeta Flack

1974 - "The Way We Were" - Barbra Streisand

Ugh! Now this is bad!

1975 - "Pick Up the Pieces" - The Average White Band

1976 - "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon

Paul is the first artist to be repeated on In My Life. This is also one of the discrepancies between the two lists. The second website lists "The Theme from SWAT by Rhythm Heritage. I'd forgotten about that when I made disc one. I'm not sure which I'd have chosen if I knew of the difference at the time. I will admit I like Simon's song better, though.

1977 - "New Kid In Town" - The Eagles

A long time personal favorite. We're entering my favorite stretch of the CD.

1978 - "Stayin' Alive" - The Bee Gees

1979 - "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" - Rod Stewart

Not one of Rod's best songs, but I still like it.

1980 - "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Queen

This ends the best part of the album.

1981 - "9 to 5" - Dolly Parton

According to the second site, Eddie Rabbit's "I Love a Rainy Night" was number one. I think I'd've rather used it instead of this one. Oh well.

1982 - "Centerfold" - J. Geils Band

Peter Wolf is also Pisces. So is J. Geils himself.

1983 - "Come to Me" - Patti Austin and James Ingrams.

And that completes the Number One Hits for the first 20 years of my life.

np - Music for The Native Americans - Robbie Robertson and the Red Road Ensemble

By MrPorter on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 4:18 pm:

A couple of years ago I started a series of Mix Discs to be built around the theme of the Seasons. Actually…it started out as an excuse to get out some songs from my vinyl collection onto a single disc and they just happened to work around the concept of Autumn. So there was a bit of initial inspiration there and I even posted the set list on the other board, but I have decided to be patient with the other seasons and jot down songs here and there until a set list evolved. I’m in no rush to force these things, but I just completed Winter and I really like it.I still haven’t decided if I’m going to go with the obvious for Summer , yet, though my gut tells me it will be built around The Raspberries’ “Drivin’ Around” and stuff like that…

There’s a lot of stuff here, stylistically, but it works because the segues are designed to be sort of ‘stepping stones’, and it’s an interesting trip besides.

Winter
1- Winter Heart- Pete and Maura Kennedy
2- B.C. in the Winter Time- Grievous Angels
3- California Snow- Tom Russell
4- Six Feet of Snow- Little Feat
5- Ice Age- Jorma Kaukonen
6- Ice- Daniel Lanois
7- Freeze Tag- Suzanne Vega
8- Winter in the Firelands- Pere Ubu
9- Ice Cold Ice- Husker Du
10- Cold- Tears for Fears
11- Icefire- Pat Metheny
12- Icy Blue Heart- John Hiatt
13- The Coldest Night of the Year- Bruce Cockburn
14- Frozen Man- Fairport Convention
15- Under Ice- Kate Bush
16- The Winter Tree- Renaissance
17- February Stars- Foo Fighters
18- Summer Kisses Winter Tears- Julee Cruise
19- Gloomy Winter- Dougie MacLean
20- When the Nights are Cold- Jimmie Dale Gilmore

By Benn on Monday, June 21, 2004 - 11:28 pm:

Here are tracks (so far) for an instrumental tape I'm working on. These are my favorite instrumental tracks. One caveat. Some of the cuts do have some vocals to them, but the lyrics are extremely minimalistic. Here we go:

SIDE 1

  1. "Blade Runner End Titles" - Vangelis (This is the tune playing as Blue Öyster Cult hits the stage.)
  2. "Miserlou" - Dick Dale (The Pulp Fiction song.)
  3. "Death's Other Dominion" - Barry Gray (From the soundtrack to Space: 1999.)
  4. "Fire On High" - Electric Light Orchestra
  5. "Twisted Nerve" - Bernard Hermann (Learned of this one from the film Kill Bill, vol. 1.)
  6. "Rockestra Theme" - Rockestra (The final lineup of Wings plus Pete Townshend, David Gilmour, John Paul Jones, Ronnie Lane, John Bonham, Gary Booker and Kenny Jones among others.)
  7. "Linus and Lucy" - Gary Hoey (A hard rockin' version of Vince Guaraldi's classic Peanuts theme.)
  8. "Pipeline" - Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan
  9. "Zap (original version)" - Eric Johnson
  10. "Christmas Eve In Sarajevo" - Savatage
  11. "STAR TREK III - The Search For Spock" - James Horner
  12. "Last Date" - R.E.M. (A nice take on the Floyd Cramer classic.)
  13. "One of These Days" - Pink Floyd
  14. "Band 6" - the Monkees (Sorta kinda an instrumental. The closest the Pre-Fab Four ever got to doing one.)
  15. "The Wild Wild West Theme" - Richard Markowitz
  16. "Barney Miller Theme" - Jack Elliot/Allyn Ferguson (tentative)

SIDE 2
  1. "Boogie Woogie Bagel Run" - Buck Dharma (A little something from the Buck Dharma Archives.)
  2. "Born Under a Bad Sign" - Jimi Hendrix
  3. "So What" - Miles Davis
  4. "Daybreaker" - Electric Light Orchestra
  5. "Buck's Boogie (original studio version)" - Blue Öyster Cult
  6. "Wham" - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
  7. "Easy Days" - C.J. Chenier (A little zydeco thrown into the mix. )
  8. "Midnight Cowboy" - Faith No More (I love this version of the song.)
  9. "Riviera Paradise" - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (My favorite SRV instrumental and the one playing as of now. A haunting jazz-like tune.)

And there you have it. As soon as I think I've got it right, I'll let you know. (Not to mention as soon as I come up with a title for it...) (Incidentally, only one of my favorite instrumentals is not on here - "Carnage Visors" by the Cure. Given that it's about 24 minutes long it almost had to be excluded.)

"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand."

By MrPorter on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 1:20 pm:

Now I understand all of the mention of playtesting. Very interesting setlist, culling selections from a variety of sources and periods- just my speed. I can imagine it already, sort of, but nothing compares with the actual experience.

I was just joking about the title, btw. Don't drive yourself nuts- these things can be the hardest to come up with a name for if you let them. Lately I've been taking a song from the setlist and making it a "title track", provided it's evocative enough.

I'll post my own setlist from an instrumental disc that I recently made. I came up with the motivation to do one after I completed my own Bruce Cockburn instrumental disc (I took all of the instrumental tracks that he has included on his albums since the early 70's and made a set out of them). At that point it seemed like a good idea (still does) to make a rock based instrumental disc.

So it was originally supposed to be all these bands like Hot Tuna, Genesis, Husker Du, etc., with well known instrumental tracks, and then it took on a life of its own. Maybe I shouldn't put it that way, since nothing is preventing me from going ahead with my original plan and I really do like this disc and it's a staple when I'm driving now. But the 'mood' of the tracks that I started building around opened the door for other genres to be thrown into the mix. It's got some feisty tracks for sure, but also has a really dreamy quality over all. It's called-

The Other Side
1- "King Arthur's Dream"- The Hellecasters
2- "Ur"- Steve Tibbetts
3- "Previous Man"- David Torn (featuring Bill Bruford and Tony Levin)
4- "Scandanavia"- Van Morrison
5- "Ver Les Iles"- Dan ar Bras
6- "The Howl"- Wolfstone
7- "Portmeirion"- Fairport Convention
8- "Ngombi"- Baka Beyond
9- "Saucer Crash"- Tom Verlaine
10- "Ariel"- Heidi Berry
11- "Ambiguity"- Terje Rypdal
12- "Lizard's Tail"- French Frith Kaiser Thompson
13- "Ballet for a Blue Whale"- Adrian Belew
14- "Dreaming of the Other Side"- Rare Air
15- "Goodbye Walker Percy"- Brooks Williams

I could do a bunch of these things but next up is definitely going to be that original idea. But I do like what Benn's done with the TV themes, hmmmm...

By Benn on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 11:59 am:

I can think of a couple of other instrumentals I left off that are favorites of mine. They were omitted mostly due to length. The tunes are "Stealing the Enterprise" by James Horner from the STAR TREK III - The Search For Spock soundtrack and "Hebrides Overture" by Medelssohn.

"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand."

By Benn on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 - 12:00 pm:

That's Mendelssohn.

By Todd Pence on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 6:34 pm:

>"Death's Other Dominion" - Barry Gray (from the >soundtrack to /i{Space: 1999})

Hmm. I didn't know that "Death's Other Dominion" contained any music that hadn't been used in previous episodes. I'll have to watch that one again and check. Awesome episode, though.

By Benn on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 10:50 pm:

The cut is basically blitzkrieg of guitar and Moog synth. It rocks - hard. I used to have the soundtrack l.p. and along with the title track, it was my favorite cut. I used to think it was called "Death's Other Domain". I now know better. Found it on Napster, BTW.

There are two other favorite instrumentals I've left off - "Jonny Quest Theme" by Reverend Horton Heat and "Sirius" by the Alan Parsons Project. Unfortunately, the Rev. Horton Heat track is part of a medley and "Sirius" might as well be as it leads directly into "Eye In the Sky".

np - Tales From the Edge Volumes 5 & 6 - various artists (A double disc set of various Texas artists, signed and unsigned. It's pretty good. Just got it today.}

"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand."

By MrPorter on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 - 1:50 pm:

About the TV themes:

This past weekend I was at my parents' house for a family get together around the pool. Somewhere along the line my mother decided to play this Classic TV Theme Song disc that she had recently purchased. It was pretty cool, and certainly fit in with the mood of the day. But after the first 10 or so it became pretty plain that the selections really needed to be broken up (her disc had over 40 theme songs in a row). So I added a couple of mix discs to the player, including a Rockabilly disc and a Country disc, and hit the shuffle button. I am amazed at how well it worked (there definitely was some synergy on a 'period' basis between the discs- 50's 60's and 70's) amongst a broad demographic. God only knows what the neighbors thought, but the summer is just beginning :)

By Benn on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 11:14 pm:

Well, Instrumentally is finally completed. I'm listening to disc one now. Here's the final song tracking:

Disc 1

  1. "Blade Runner (End Titles)" - Vangelis
  2. "Drum Dreams" - Electric Light Orchestra (this song has never been on any album, much less an official CD.)
  3. "Miserlou" - Dick Dale
  4. "The Force Theme" - Meco
  5. "Funeral For a Friend" - Elton John (Thanks to my Wavpad program, I'm able to edit songs so I can have this version of this tune.)
  6. "Death's Other Dominion" - Barry Gray
  7. "Fire On High" (mirror version) - Electric Light Orchestra (Another Wavpad creation. I took the backmasked part of the song and flipped it over. What you get is the song playing normally, then it flips til the backmasking part is finished [revealing what was said], then continues on with the rest of the song. I heard a radio station do that in Dallas back in the '70s and always wanted to have a copy for myself.)
  8. "Twisted Nerve" - Bernard Herrman
  9. "Sanford and Son Theme" - Quincy Jones
  10. "Rockestra Theme" - Rockestra
  11. "Popcorn" - Hot Butter
  12. "A Fifth of Beethoven" - Walter Murphy
  13. "Last Date" - R.E.M.
  14. "Jonny Quest" - Reverend Horton Heat (Yet another Wavpad creation. I had to edit out the "Stop That Pigeon" portion of this medley.)
  15. "Linus and Lucy" - Gary Hoey
  16. "Pipeline" - Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan
  17. "Christmas Eve in Sarajevo" - Savatage
  18. "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)" - Benny Goodman
  19. "The Search For Spock" - James Horner
  20. "One of These Days" - Pink Floyd
  21. "Nadia's Theme (The Young and the Restless)" - Barry DeVorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr.
  22. "Band 6" - the Monkees (A questionable entry to be sure, but what the hey!)
  23. "The Wild Wild West" - Richard Markowitz
  24. "Barney Miller" - Jack Eliot/Allyn Ferguson

Disc 2

  1. "Layla (outro)" - Derek and the Dominoes (I've also thought this should be a stand alone tune. Now it is. Thank you Wavpad.)
  2. "Stealing the Enterprise" - James Horner
  3. "Theme From Close Encounters of the Third Kind" - Meco (Yes, the disco version. But I love it.)
  4. "Boogie Woogie Bagel Bun" - Buck Dharma
  5. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Main Title)" - Ennio Morricone
  6. "Born Under a Bad Sign" - Jimi Hendrix
  7. "The Empire Strikes Back Medley: Darth Vader/Yoda's Theme" - Meco (Much better than the disco version of Star Wars. By far.)
  8. "Sirius" - Alan Parsons Project (Actually downloaded it like this. So this one is not a Wavpad creation.)
  9. "All Blues" - Miles Davis
  10. "Moonlight Serenade" - Glenn Miller
  11. "Midnight Cowboy" - Faith No More
  12. "Daybreaker" - Electric Light Orchestra
  13. "Easy Days" - C.J. Chenier
  14. "Wham!" - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
  15. "Buck's Boogie (studio version)" - Blue Öyster Cult
  16. "Riveria Paradise" - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Well, now Disc 2 has just started and so far, I like it.

"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand."
