Best Drum Solo

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Music Catch-Basin: Best Drum Solo

Hmph. Cynical Chick thinks the great drummers don't deserve anything more than a footnote in the "Best Guitar Solos" thread. Shows what she knows. (Note that I am a drummer.)

Um... can't actually think of any right now. ^_^;;;

Oh, wait, there's a good one in the middle of Fiona Apple's "Limp." Drummer appears to be either Matt Chamberlain or someone by the name of "Butch." (The liner notes list them both for "drums and percussion" on that song.)

I quite like the drum solo at the beginning and end of "Elephant Stone" by the Stone Roses.

The 17:05 minute version of Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida."
Also, a couple live Rush tunes (pre-Power Windows)have some good solos. Sorry I can't recall which songs; guess I'll be listening to Rush this weekend.
I'm not a drummer, but I love drums. Great category!

Queen's Roger Taylor's tymphani solo in the Live Killers' version of "Brighton Rock."

Otherwise, the most important element in any rock drum solo is brevity.

Oh, thought of another. The Modern Jazz Quartet's version of "It Don't Mean a Thing" has a tremendous cymbals-only solo section performed by the great Connie Kay. (At least, I think it's him.) The vibe part really takes center stage in this tune, but the drum solo is one for the ages, I've always thought.

I remember hearing that once Louis Bellson and Buddy Rich had a drum-off. Does anyone know anything about this, and where I could buy (or download if not for sale) a copy of it?

ANY solo from Lars Ulrich (Metallica), and ANY solo from Christoph "Doom" Schneider (Rammstein).

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, July 07, 2002 - 12:51 pm:

I'm sorry, but Lars Ulrich is a complete and utter tool.

By CC on Sunday, July 07, 2002 - 1:57 pm:

Because of Napster? I agree, but the boy can play.

Alan White of Yes in "Ritual (Nous Sommes Du Soleil)"

Not really a solo, and not actually a duet, but a duel: Harry Belafonte and Animal in an episode of the 1970's The Muppet Show.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, July 11, 2002 - 12:08 pm:

Well, no contest. Animal, of course, comes out on top.

While technically somewhere between a "solo" and a duet with the band, Bun E. Carlos smokes on the intro of "Ain't That A Shame" (and throught out that whole song in particular) from Cheap Trick's Budokan album. Reminds me in some ways of Ringo's solo on "The End," which is another solo worth mentioning here.

Can't believe no one has mentioned one of the most famous (or infamous, depending on how you feel about drum solos): Greg Lake's from "Tank".

... or the drum solo in Chicago Transit Authority's song I'm a Man ...

Edgar Winter's Frankenstein or Ringo's The End.
