open wide for chunky!!! ...
BTW, you're welcome.
Continuing the "drive" songs:
"I drive the very lastest hovercar."
"Yours Truly, 2095" - ELO
I can't believe a Southern boy like me forgot this one:
"The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" - The Band or Joan Baez - take yer choice.
"Fun, Fun, Fun" - the Beach Boys
"Little Old Lady From Pasadena" - Jan and Dean
"Drivin' My Life Away" - Eddie Rabbit
"Interstellar Overdrive" - Pink Floyd
"Suzy and Jeffrey" - Blondie ("Jeffrey said, 'Let's wait.'/Sue took her foot off the brake/She drove into a wall.")
And I can't believe I left my fellow Texan off here. So here's two by Janis Joplin:
"Oh Lord, won't you buy me
A Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches.
I must make amends."
- "Mecredes Benz" -
"We sang every song that driver knew."
- "Me and My Bobby McGhee" -
I have no idea who recorded this, but on one of Dallas' radio stations (the late Q102 perhaps) I heard this parody of Fine Young Cannibal's "She's Drives Me Crazy" -
"He drives Miss Daisy.
She won't let no one else.
He drives Miss Daisy.
She can't drive herself."
"Highways filled with broken heroes on a last chance power drive"
- Born to Run, Springsteen
I already got that one, Scott.
Sorry.
Bummer!
"My Maserati does 185.
I lost my license.
Now I don't drive."
"Life's Been Good" - Joe Walsh
Has this been posted?
"I Can't Drive 55," Sammy Hagar
one I'm ashamed to admit:
"Distracted," i5. When I'm drivin in my car...
I take it there are three other boards. Sorry if these have already been mentioned.
Magic Bus by the Who
Bitchin' Camaro by the Dead Milkmen
Swing Low Sweet Cadilac by Dizzy Gilespie (a band of Fleetwoods comin' after me/ comin' for to carry me home.)
Hannah, I listed "I Can't Drive 55".
Um, William, what lines in those songs mention the word "drive"? I think "Magic Bus" has a line "Thank you driver for getting me here", but the other two I'm unfamiliar with.
One I keep thinking of, but have so far failed to post ('til now):
"Driven to Tears" - The Police.
May be time for a new word. Any suggestions? (I've got a couple, but I figure it's somebody else's turn.)
"I've been drivin' all night
My hands wet on the wheel."
- "Radar Love" - Golden Earrings
"I got my poor old gray hair daddy
Drivin' my limosine."
- "The Cover of The Rolling Stone" - Dr. Hook
"Drivin' With Your Eyes Closed" - Don Henley
New word(s): "Rock" or "Rock N' Roll" or "Rock and Roll". Should be an easy one.
"We Will Rock You," Queen
"I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night," KISS
"That Old Time Rock'n'Roll," Bob Seger
"Like a Rock," Bob Seger
Much more to come later...this is what immediately sprang to mind. If I give it thought, expect much more.

"Rock Music" - Jefferson Starship ("Rock and Roll is good time music.")
"Stairway to Cleveland" - Jefferson Starship ("What you gonna do about Rock and Roll?")

--The hungry
and the hunted
--Explode into rock and roll bands
"Rock around the clock" -- Bill Haley and the Comets
"Crocodile Rock" -- Elton John
"Rock the Casbah" -- The Clash
I think this one is as bad as suggesting "Love".
Probably, Scott. But I figure it's one to which everyone should be able to contribute at least one song.
DANG it! You got "Rock is Dead"!!!!!!!
:P I should've thought of that, seeing as how I love that song...
"Stairway to Heaven," Led Zeppelin
When all are one and one is all,
To be a rock and not to roll..
"Rock With You," Michael Jackson

Benn, it was on These Days
One of these I'll learn how to spell my own name!
Keep practicing, Scott.
"Benn, it was on These Days" - CC
Not according to www.cdnow.com I just looked. It is, however, on the albums Crush and One Wild Night. And it is the Neil Young song. (And Neil does it better, natch.)
"Rock 'n Roll is Here to Stay," Grease
Originally done by Danny and The Juniors in the late 50's, Hannah.
"Rock the Boat" - The Hues Corporation Note: this is considered by some to be the first disco song)
Actually, Scott, I think that The Hustle was, wasn't it? I always thought so, at least.
Nope. Van McCoy's "The Hustle" came after "Rock the Boat".

Oh, "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley, Ritchie Cunningham, and the Comet Cleansers. (I might be off on who performed it.)

Still looking for that blue jean, baby queen
Prettiest girl I've ever seen
Scott, the full title of the Neil Young song is "Hey Hey My My (Into the Black)". By the same token, the acoustic version of the song, "My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)", has the same lyric.

and the song "Take 5" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
"Every Breath You Take" - The Police
How about anything by the now legendary boy band Take That?
Sparrow47,
It was not nearly as good as take five, but the Brubeck Quartet did a "sequal" to take five. I'm not sure, but I think the alblum was Time Further Out.
Take Ten Brubeck Quartet
Blue, I'll check that out.
Meanwhile,
"Take the Long Way Home," by Supertramp.

Since Mark hogged up all the "take" words (well, I have thought of over forty other songs, but I'm not gonna flood the board with 'em), here's a new word for you-
"Goodbye".
"Hello, Goodbye," the Beatles
"It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," Boyz II Men
"Get Over Yourself (Goodbye)," Eden's Crush
"Say Goodbye Hollywood," Eminem
"Goodbye," Spice Girls
(note: I would rather chew rocks than listen to these last three. Em has maybe 3 good songs).
"I Try," Macy Gray I try to say goodbye and I choke..
"Goodbye to Romance," Ozzy Osbourne
"Power of Goodbye," Madonna
only one edition tonight ...
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

I'm still waiting for the day he does just that.
"Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye)" - Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons / The Bay City Rollers
Sophie: Chris de Burgh - "Say goodbye to it all"
Sven: I'm still waiting for the day he does just that.
He can't. He didn't pay the ferryman!
Benn, I deliberately left out many "take" songs so as to not hog them all myself, so that others can post them instead.
Two weeks silence! Wow.
Time for a new word in that case - we've already had rock, now let's follow this logically and ask for songs containing the word "pop".
Pop Muzik, M
Pop Goes The Weasel
Pop Singer, John Cougar Mellancamp
Pop Life Prince and the Revolution
Popsicles and Icicles, The Murmaids
Pop A Top, Alan Jackson. At least that's how I think the song's title is spelled. Anyway, it's a drinking song.
What, no more takers for "pop" Then how about "days of the week" songs?
Sunday
Never On Sunday, Connie Francis (which mentions all the days of the week)
Sunday Mornin' and Sunday Will Never Be the Same, Spanky and Our Gang
Monday
Monday, Monday, The Mamas and The Papas
Rainy Days and Mondays, the Carpenters
Tuesday
Ruby Tuesday, the Rolling Stones
Tuesday Afternoon, the Moody Blues
Wednesday
Can't remember any right offhand, other than Never On Sunday.
Thursday
Ditto
Friday
Friday I'm In Love, The Cure
Friday's Child, Nancy Sinatra
Saturday
Saturday's Child, The Monkees
Come Saturday Morning, the Sandpipers
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting, Elton John
"Happy Days" theme
"Eleanor Rigby," Beatles
Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace..
And a few more on the tip of my tongue, that I can't get to come out...
"Eleanor Rigby," Beatles
Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace..
Sorry, that's "Lady Madonna".
I just realized that after Benn pointed it out; came back here to correct myself.
"Another Saturday Night", Cat Stevens
"Saturday Night" - Whigfield
[MWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAAA!!!! -everyone]
"Friday on My Mind" by The Easybeats
Monday morning feels so bad,
Ev'rybody seems to nag me
Coming tuesday I feel better,
Even my old man looks good,
Wednesday just don't go,
Thursday goes too slow,
I've got Friday on my mind
"Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers
(different song than one by Whigfield)
Good going on the Wednesday song! And I didn't think of the Bay City Rollers song till later, as well as The Drifters' Saturday Night at the Movies.
Wednesday morning at five o'clock
As the day begins.
She's Leaving Home - the Beatles
"Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M." by Simon and Garfunkel.
"Lady Madonna," I think, references all days of the week, not just Monday.
Oh! Gah! "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2!
and then there's "Why Don't You Write Me," by Simon and Garfunkel:
"Monday morning, sitting in the sun, hoping and wishing for the mail to come, Tuesday never got a word. Wednesday, Thursday, ain't no sign, drank a half-bottle of iodine. Friday, woe is me, I'm going to hang my body from the highest tree..."
Two different songs called "Seven Days" mentioning all the days of the week in their choruses:
The Sting version:
Monday
I could wait till Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine
Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time
Saturday could wait
But Sunday'd be too late
The Craig David version:
Monday
Took her for a drink on Tuesday
We were making love by Wednesday
And on Thursday,
And Friday,
And Saturday,
We chilled on Sunday
By Marillion:
Chelsea Monday
Sugar Mice: I was flicking through the channels on the TV
On a Sunday in Milwaukee in the rain
Bitter Suite: A train sleeps in a siding
The driver guzzles another can of lager, lager.
To wash away the memories of a Friday night down at the club.
Heart of Lothian: Rooting, tooting Cowboys, lucky little ladies at the watering holes.
They'll score the Friday night goals.
I can't belive no one has thought of "Manic Monday". It was one of my favotite songs when I was a kid.
Small Faces: Lazy Sunday Afternoon
Scorpions: Loving you Sunday morning
This is a powerful one:
Marillion: Forgotten sons
From the dole queue to the regiment a profession in a flash
But remember Monday signings when from door to door you dash
On the news a nation mourns you unknown soldier, count the cost
For a second you'll be famous but labelled posthumous
"Pleasent Valley Sunday" by The Monkees.
Another one: "The Diary of Horace Wimp" - ELO
It mentions all the days except Saturday - because, according to Jeff Lynne, everyone stops for football [read: "saarkur"] on Saturday.
(OK, so I can't actually prove my last post without printing out most of the lyrics to the song thus risking the wrath of The Hairy One, but...)
Okay, here's some more "pop" songs:
"Pop Song '89" - R.E.M.
"Top of the Pop" - The Kinks
"Top of the Pop" - The Smithereens
"A.M. Radio" - Everclear ("I like pop/I like Soul/I like Rock/But I never liked disco.")
"Too Pooped to Pop" - Chuck Berry
"Coffee Shop" - The Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Meet me at the coffee shop/We can dance like Iggy Pop.")
"Peter Percevil Patterson's Pet Pig Porky" - The Monkees ("Peter Percevil Patterson's pet pig porky ate so much pie that you know what he did - he popped." )
Oh yeah! I knew I was forgetting a "pop" song:
"Pop That Coochie" - 2 Live Crew (Can't post the R rated title, though.)
Given the events of the last week or so in the UK, how about songs that contain the word fire, or burn, or other heat-related words...
Here are some fires to warm you all up:
"Fire" - (The Crazy World of) Arthur Brown
"Fields of Fire" - Big Country
"Light My Fire" - The Doors (or, if you prefer, Will Young)
"Firestarter" - Prodigy

"Fire On High" - Electric Light Orchestra
"Heaven's On Fire" - KISS
"The Devil Went Down to Georgia" - The Charlie Daniels Band ("He played 'Fire on the Mountain'/'Run Boys, Run.'")
"I'm On Fire" - Bruce Springsteen
The Last In Line" - Dio ("We are fire/We are stone.")

"Fire" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
"Fire Water Burn" - The Bloodhound Gang
"The City Sleeps" - MC 900 Ft. Jesus ("Everybody has a little secret he keeps/I light fires while the city sleeps.")
A few more:
"It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" - R.E.M. ("Wire
in a fire, representing seven games, a government
for hire and a combat site.")
"Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" - The Beatles ("And lastly through a hog's head of real fire.")
"Frozen Fire/Blood and Fire" - Type O Negative
Now I go enjoy Thanksgiving with my parents.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
Marillion - Forgotten Sons:
The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves
Alleys sing with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell
Chris de Burgh - What about me?
Our Leader will bring victory, but our land is in flames...
"After the Fire" - Roger Daltrey (a personal favorite of mine. Great lyrics,)
"Cities On Flames (With Rock and Roll)" - Blue Oyster Cult
"Disco Inferno" - The Trammps ("Burn baby, burn.")
Okay ... the one that should be on everyones fire list ...
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
"Smoke on the water ... a fire in the sky"
"But some $tupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground"
"They burned down the gambling house - It died with an awful sound"
BTW, there was a rock group mentioned in this song ... name it! (extra hooplas to the person that can name the group AND how it's name was spoken in the song)
There was ALSO a "side" reference to another rock group ... name THAT and you get double kudos!
Some others by Blue Oyster Cult:
"The heat from below can burn your eyes out." - "Hot Rails to Hell"
"Is it any wonder my mind's on fire?" - "Flaming Telepaths"
"An echo snap and scream of fire" - "Morning Final"
"Fireworks"
"They have killed the fire clown" - "The Great Sun Jester"
"A fiery night/The night that I saw/Lips in the hill" - "Lips In Hills"
"Burnin' For You"
"Eyes on Fire"
"And where there's smoke there's fire/The flipside of desire." - "Spy In the House of the Night"
"Still Burnin'"
"With the unknown zodiac, the untold sign/Of the fiery maniac within each breast" - "The Old Gods Return"
Well, that covers every album but Imaginos and the Bad Channels soundtrack.
BENN!! ... You can't name the song/group mentioned by me above?? ... (PLEASE tell me you are letting the "regular" public have a chance at an answer)
I didn't see your follow up post, Derf. The answer, of course, is Frank Zappa and the Mothers (of Invention).
No matter HOW the lyric people say the words go ... I ALWAYS hear "Frank Zappa and the Mammas". The "side" reference is listed in these lyrics:
We ended up at the Grand Hotel - It was empty, cold and bare
But with the Rolling Truck Stones Thing just outside making our music there
(there is also the line "Funky & Claude was running in and out, pulling kids out of the ground" and I have no idea if they/them/it is also a rock group reference)
Leave it to Benn to know that one. Anyway, Benn, how can you mention Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" without mentioning his "Fire" which he wrote and that the Pointer Sisters also did a pretty good version of? Or is it the same one Sven mentioned with (The Crazy World of) Arthur Brown? I know it's not the same as Hendrix's.
No, they're different songs Mark. I just left out the third song called "Fire" on purpose. I might have listed it as being performed by Robin Williams and said it was "Elmer Fudd sings Bruce Springsteen". "I'm dwivin' in my caw. You tuwn on the wadio." I swear that bit by Williams has ruined me. I have fun singing other songs in Elmer Fudd's voice these days.
Besides, I prefer "I'm on Fire" to Springsteen's "Fire".
Anyway, for the record, to the best of my knowledge "Funky and Claude" were roadies who worked for Deep Purple. It's definitely not a reference to another band.
By the way, Mark, congratulations for listing it correctly. Officially it is "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown". Go figure.
More "fire" songs:
"Hearts of Fire" - Roger Daltrey
"That's the Way of the World" - Earth, Wind and Fire ("Hearts afire/Create love desire.")
"The One I Love" - R.E.M. ("FIRRRE!")
"Fire and Rain" - "Sweet Baby" James Taylor (Okay, I'll be the one to list this, to me, obvious tune.)
"Black no. 1 (Little Miss Scare All)" - Type O Negative ("Her perfume smells like burning leaves.")
"Fire Woman" -The Cult
"Sara" - Fleetwood Mac ("Said you give me love/But you never told me about the fire.")
I was waiting for someone to mention EW&F!
And now...
"St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)" - John Parr
"Burning Love" - Elvis Presley (Girl, girl, girl, You gonna set me on fire)
"Burning Down the House" - Talking Heads (Fighting fire with fire)
I thought of the Talking Heads song, Sven. But I forgot to post it.
Some more:
"This Planet's On Fire" - Sammy Hagar
"Wildfire" - Michael Murphy
"Hang Fire" - the Rolling Stones
"Baby's On Fire" - Sammy Hagar
Thought of a "pop" one: "Pop Goes the World" - Men Without Hats
"Dancing in the Dark" - Bruce Springsteen
Can't start a fire with out a spark... this gun's for hire, we're only dancin' in the dark.
"American Pie" - Don McClean ("Flames flying high in the night.")
"Flaming Youth" - KISS ("Set the night on fire")
"Eternal Flame" - The Bangles
"The Flame" - Cheap Trick
"Lost Her in the Sun" - John Stewart ("Put fire in your heart/For the wind is getting cold.")
"Burn, Hollywood Burn" - Public Enemy
"Fire Lake" - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
"Fire and Ice" - Pat Benatar
A "pop" song I forgot to list:
"International Pop Overthrow" - Material Issue.
Going back to the "fire"/"burn" words:
"I'll light the fire/You put the flower in the vase." - "Our House" - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
"Fire Down Below" - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
"Play With Fire" - The Rolling Stones
"I know I'm playin' with fire/Get burned every time." - "One More Time" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
still playing - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Lynyrd Skynyrd (Whaddya think prompted the inclusion of that last song?
Some Metallica fire:
"Fuel" ("Gimme fuel/Gimme fire")
"Low Man's Lyric" ("The trash fire is warm."
"Hero of the Day" ("The windows burns the light/The way back home.")
n.p. (still!) - Lynyrd Skynyrd
I may have missed this if it was already posted: "Girls with Guns," Tommy Shaw ("Shoot straight, can't wait to fire away.")
Mein Gott! It's been over a month since there's been a post here. Time for a new word, I'd say. So in honor of President Dubya's impending war with Sodamn Insane, let's try the word, "war".
"Veteran of the Psychic Wars" - Blue Oyster Cult
"Make Rock, Not War" - Blue Oyster Cult
"When Love Goes to War" - Berlin
"The Door Into Summer" - The Monkees ("Well, it's fool's gold/Stacked up all around him/From a killing in the market on the war.")
"Boy Blue" - Electric Light Orchestra ("I have fought in the holiest wars.")
"Civil War" - Guns N Roses
"Fredonia Is Going to War" - The Marx Brothers
np - All That You Can't Leave Behind - U2 (I know, it should be their album War, but I currently and regrettably don't own a copy of it. )
Benn,
You leave out the song used in Rush Hour ...
WAR! ... uuhh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nuthin!
May I suggest that songs about war can become subjective if you do not give a basis for the word.
For example, if I were to infer that protest songs were an example of songs about war, then the entire topic under the Music category would suffice ...
All I'm sayin' dear boy is define what you want us to respond to ... songs with the word WAR in the title, or songs that refer to specific wartime battles, or songs that invoke a feeling of warlike hostility, or what?
Any song with the word "war" in its title or lyrics will do. Doesn't matter if it's pro- or anti-war. Just so long as the word or its plural variant is present. "Warrior" is not acceptable. I mean the topic is "Name songs containing the word..." If someone wants a protest songs board, well you still have the "Create a New Conversation" button here doncha?
By the way, just for the record, I didn't forget Edwin Starr's "War". I chose not to list it. There are others I can think of. But I'd to see how everyone else fairs first.
BTW, how are things back home in the Big D area? How's your new job going? It's off topic I know, so feel free to email me or buzz me on AIM.
np - Pinned - Tablet
Chris de Burgh - Last Night
Just staring at a photograph of someone, and she began to cry.
For a boy left behind in the war
Marillion - Blind Curve
I see convoys curbcrawling West German Autobahns
Trying to pick up a war
Benn, (off topic)
Things are just peachy here in the Big-D area and I'm progressing to the cold-salad-prep line of the hotel I'm working at. Heck, they even have spent the geetus to put me in a "hotel" uniform ...
Back to topic ...
Onward Christian Soldiers, marching as to war
The Dogs of War ... Pink Floyd ... (album) Momentary Lapse of Reason
"Dead From The Waist Down" - Catatonia (Make hay, not war)
"War Baby" - Tom Robinson
"Camouflage" - Stan Ridgway (It was in the jungle wars of '65)
"Two Tribes" - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (When two tribes go to war)
"99 Red Balloons" - Nena (The war machine springs to life, Opens up one eager eye)
(and also in the German version:
Neunundneunzig Jahre Krieg / Liessen keinen Platz für Sieger
[99 years of war / Doesn't leave a place for victors])
Y'know, in thinking of "war" songs, "Two Tribes" and "99 Red Balloons" were two I never thought of. Good choices, Sven.
Here's a few more:
"War Machilne" - KISS
"Levon" - Elton John ("Levon wears his war wound like a crown.")
"White Flags" - Blue Oyster Cult ("Like the white flags of surrender/War is over.")
"Happy X-Mas (War Is Over)" - John Lennon and Yoko Ono
"The Masters of War" - Bob Dylan
"The Post War Dream" - Pink Floyd
"When the War Comes" - Blue Oyster Cult
"The War Song" - Culture Club
"Ordinary World" - Duran Duran ("Papers in the roadside tell of suffering and greed/Feared today, forgot tomorrow/Here beside the news of holy war and holy need/Ours is a little sorrowed talk/Blown away." This is my second favorite Duran Duran song. "Hungry Like the Wolf" is the first favorite.)
np - Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan (So, I didn't finish listening to it last night. So sue me. You'll waste your lawyer's time given how broke I am. But hey! This is America. You have the right to all the frivolous lawsuits you want.)
Off topic, but Derf, it's good to hear things are going so well back home. Good luck with the job.
Derf, this is up to 106k.
Just what I wasn't about to say.
I will therefore end this thread and re-start it as part 5 ... but PLEASE keep giving "war" songs such as ...
Better End Soon [3rd Movement] - Chicago
They say we got to make war
Or the economy will fall
But if we don't stop
We won't be around no more
