In order to begin the new thread, I'll include ScottN's last post ...
(these are lyrics to which the song title and artist/group should be identified)
OK, try these on for size.
1. Well the blaze and noise boy,
he's gunnin' that
loaded to blastin' point
2. And if we blow this one
They ain't gonna be looking for just me this time
3. Queen of diamonds, ace of spades
Newly discovered lovers of the Everglades
They take out a full-page ad in the trades
To announce their arrival
4. Well, I'm just a lonely acrobat
the live wire is my trade
The censored word is b*tch.
#2 is Springsteen's "Meeting Across The River (?)"
Correct.
Derf wrote "Butch, Ole Boy, YOU can start part 4 as easy as I CAN! (but since you requested
it ... okay, dude!)
Just didn't want to step on your moderatorial prerogatives. As a Roving Mod I must always remember to use my powers with restraint. As the old saying goes "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Roving Mods may not have absolute power here on the NitCentral boards but we could cause quite a bit of havoc and bad feelings if we wanted.
"With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility."
"With Great Power and Responsibility, one can make up the rules" ...
With great power and irresponsibility, one can make everyone else's life miserable.
Still waiting on 1, 3, and 4.
[Jeopardy theme plays]
...
#1 and #3 are from the same album. Lost in the Flood and Does this Bus Stop at 82nd Street? are both on Greetings from Asbury Park. I don't know #4, but I am guessing it is also early Springsteen.
Correct on #1 and #3.
Todd gets the next quiz for getting #2.
Cazbob follows for getting 1&3.
Still waiting on #4.
Mary Queen of Arkansas is also from Asbury Park, and it's also #4.
Miko Iko gets #4.
I would probably have gotten the other three if I'd taken the time to go through my Springsteen lyrics (somehow I had the feeling that all three of the others were Springsteen songs). I'll post my quiz later tonight, just give me time to come up with a good one.
Okay, here it is:
These lyrics are all from famous one-hit wonder songs, circa 1970. Name the song and the artist:
1. "Her weapons were her crystal eyes,
making every man a man."
2. "But he made it clear he couldn't stay,
no harbor was his home."
3. "But no one heard them calling,
No one came at all,
'Cause they were too busy watching
Those old raindrops fall."
4. "When I die and I lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best."
5. "She talks kinda lazy, and people say she's crazy"
And her life's a mystery."
2. is "Brandy" by Looking Glass. I thought 4. might have been Blood, Sweat and Tears' "And When I Die", but it isn't. Right now, 2. is the only one I know.
np - Brigade - Heart
1. "Venus" by Shocking Blue (BTW, it always sounded like she was singing 'making every man mad' to me. Oh well, mine's a better rhyme. )
3. "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image
4. "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum
5. "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse
Alright, Butch! That gets all but #2.
Benn got #2.
Maybe I got it wrong, Scott.
DOH! Sorry, Benn, somehow my eyes missed your post. My apologies. That wraps up this quiz.
I knew Benn got it right, that's why I didn't mention it.
All I knew is, if I got it wrong, I was going to be very interested in finding out what other song had lyrics so similar to the Looking Glass song.
np - Book of Love - Book of Love
Okay, since we're on a roll ...
Name the songs/artists from the 70's-80's:
1. Young man ...
2. I'd drive a million miles
To be with you tonight
So if you're feeling low
Turn up your radio
3. The lights are on
But you're not home
Your mind
Is not your own
4. She's mighty-mighteee ...
5. So bring your good times and your laughter too ...
1. "YMCA" -- The Village People
5. "Celebration" -- Kool and the Gang
2. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" - Wang Chung
3. "Addicted to Love" - Robert Palmer
4. .... I'll guess "Brick House" by The Commodores.
And darnit but Scotty was just too fast, I coulda swept 'em! :-) (Good job Scott!)
n.-really-p.: "Watching Scotty Grow"
That should be...............not-really-playing
All the above answers were correct ... let's push-on, shall we?
Name the group/songs from this list of lyrics:
1. People try to put us d-down
Just because we get around
2. I know you deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have, 'cause there's magic in my eyes
3. I'm so nervous, I just sit and smile
Her house is only another mile
4. Well the kids don't eat, and the dog can't sleep
There's no escape from the music in the whole d@mn street
5. But my dreams they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
6. I woke up in a Soho doorway, a policeman knew my name
He said, "You can go sleep at home tonight if you can get up and walk away"
(Extra points for naming the song NOT mentioned above that is considered one of this group's MOST famous works)
1. "My Generation"
2. "I Can See For Miles"
3. "Magic Bus"
4. "Squeeze Box"
5. "Behind Blue Eyes"
6. "Who Are You"
The act that recorded these songs: the Who.
The bonus point question? That would be their album, Tommy, right? Or do you mean "Pinball Wizard"? Or "Baba O'Riley"? "My Generation" has the famous "Hope I die before I get old" line, making it the Who's signature song.
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
I was alluring to "Pinball Wizard" ...
I see, Derf. And were you alluring to it?
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
Sorry ... must have been the happy-juice talking ... perhaps I might allude to that as the culprit.
Okay, the next quiz is ...
Name the song that the group "Cake" refers to in it's song titled "Frank Sinatra" ...
"Stormy Weather"
Quite correct, Snickerdoodle!
You may take a turn at the nitpicker prize box ...
And now, the next quiz ...
I'll list some singers/artists, and YOU provide the hit song they are most famous for:
Gloria Gaynor
Donna Summer
Rose Royce
Frieda Payne
Gloria Gaynor - "I Will Suvive"
Donna Summer - "Bad Girls", "Dim All the Lights", "Enough Is Enough (No More Tears)", "Hot Love", "She Works Hard For the Money", am I getting warm?
Rose Royce - "Car Wash"
Frieda Payne - I should know this, but I don't off hand.
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
Okay..
dig dig dig....
It's the Chief's lost Guide I notes for the TNG episode "The Enemy"! Hmm...it pretty much only says "Wesley saves the day again" over and over and over.
Donna Summer - "Love to Love You, Baby", "MacArthur Park"
Donna Summer - I feel love
That's the one which always springs to mind (memories of a long enjoyable summer break with the radio playing).
Frieda Payne ... Band of Gold
No wonder I didn't know the answer to the Frieda Payne quiz. I'm not familiar with the song.
So, has anyone identified the answer to the Donna Summer portion of the quiz?
np - Only Rock and Roll #1 Radio Hits 1980-1984 - various artists
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
I suspect it's not any of the ones listed, but "Last Dance". (Of the others, I'd say "Love to Love You, Baby").
Could be "Hot Stuff". Or "On the Radio".
np - Fisherman's Blues - the Waterboys
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
I forgot that "Hot Stuff" was Donna Summer. You may be right on that one, Benn!
OK, Derf, what is it?
ScottN: ... OK, Derf. what is it?
You are ALLUDING (Benn reference) to the song that I was referring to for the Donna Summer tune. I'll disappoint you by saying it was the already mentioned tune of Love To Love You Baby.
It is VERY nice to see that she has a much more fertile song repertoire than I thought she had!
"It is VERY nice to see that she has a much more fertile song repertoire than I thought she had!" - Derf
Enough that her original Greatest Hits album was a double record set (On the Radio). The only thing bad about it is the fact the songs are strung together into one long medley.
That album features such songs as
1. "On the Radio" *
2. "Love to Love You" *
3. "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It"
4. "I Feel Love" (I forgot about this one!) *
5. "Our Love"
6. "I Remember Yesterday"
7. "I Love You"
8. "Heaven Knows" (Another one I've forgotten.) *
9. "Last Dance" *
10. "MacArthur Park" * +
11. "Hot Stuff" * +
12. "Bad Girls" * +
13. "Dim All the Lights" *
14. "Sunset People"
15. "Enough Is Enough (No More Tears)" (With Barbra Streisand) * +
16. "On the Radio (Long Version)"
"She Works Hard For the Money" was a top ten hit in 1983.
* Songs I remember hearing on the radio.
+ Number 1 in the U.S.
np - Flashback - Electric Light Orchestra
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
Ha! I win! I had "Love to Love You, Baby!"
Who loves ya, baby?
Here's a quick quiz:
I purposely listened to two songs today - The Revenge of Vera Gemini by BOC and Lakeside Park by Rush. Who can tell me why I did that?
Funny, I played "The Revenge of Vera Gemini" and the album, Trepanation by the Brain Surgeons* because today is Blue Oyster Cult's original drummer and founder, Albert Bouchard's birthday. "Vera Gemini" has the lines "The 24th of May (Your birthday)" in it.
I would guess the Rush song also mentions "The 24th of May", too.
*The Brain Surgeons is Albert Bouchard's post B.O.C. band. They're not too bad. For further information, check out these websites: http://www.cellsum.com/home.htm
and

np - Concrete Corner Compilation - various artists

Oh yeah! Happy birthday Albert Bouchard!
np - Concrete Corner Compilation - various artists
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
Very good, Benn. Lakeside Park has the lyric Everyone would gather on the 24th of May, sitting in the sand to watch the fireworks display.
Any Canadians out there want to fill us in on the significance of the 24th of May?
(Since I'm not a Canadian ... I'll not venture a guess) However, on to the next quiz ...
A somewhat tricky one ... Name the song/artist
I'm a desperado
Underneath your window
I see a silhouette
Are you my Juliet?
Hint: The next line in the song ...
I feel a mad connection with your body
Extra hint: This artist had a MEGA hit in the 90's and quickly faded into obscurity ... this song is from the album that contains the English AND Spanish versions of the hit tune.
Ricky Martin, "Shake Your Bon-Bon".
Yep ... I've always wondered why that song wasn't as big a hit as "Livin' La Vida Loca" ... maybe because "Shake your Bon-Bon, Baby" is such a lame line that kids in the 90's wouldn't swallow it ... not even kids of Cherry Cordial manufacturers!
Derf, ol' buddy, ol' pal, you have no idea how happy I am to report that I could not have begun to guess the answer to your quiz. The fact that I can't for the life of me, identify the lyrics to a Ricky Martin song - any Ricky Martin song - fills me with the greatest of relief. I am not that much of an expert on music. Praise the Great Spirit!
Though I do gotta wonder about Snick knowing the answer...
np - Agents of Fortune - Blue Öyster Cult
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
Okay, Benn ole' buddy, ole' pal ... here's one you MIGHT know ...
Name the song/original group (not the remake)
From deep inside the tears
That I'm forced to cry
From deep inside the pain
That I chose to hide
Benn: Though I do gotta wonder about Snick knowing the answer...
Benn, we MUST allow the chance that "Snick" is NOT the beloved "Snickerdoodle" that we here at Nitcentral.com so love and admire. However, if it IS Snickerdoodle, I would commend Snick for knowing the answer! (YOU, Benn, are leaning toward a somewhat lesser music "buff" for disregarding Ricky Martin ... what's next, Tiny Tim?! ... Prince?! ... The Left Banke?! ... John Travolta?!)
Hey! I like Prince!
And I do believe Snick is indeed Snickerdoodle.
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
Oh! One of my favorite songs! Okay, but in case this quiz was meant specifically for Benn, I'll answer this in white spoily text.
The Four Tops, "Walk Away Renee".
END INVISIBLE LETTERS
Nuts, there's been several thousand covers of this song, it seems, so I guess I flunked the original group part of it. The one I mentioned is the cover I prefer.
Still haven't heard Vonda Shepard's cover of it...
I don't even know that song. The Left Banke, though I think is the original artist.
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
The song is ... "Walk Away Renee"
The group is indeed The Left Banke (covers by The Four Tops, etc)
Okay, I take it back. I do know the song, "Walk Away Renee". Per Snick's suggestion, I d/led the Four Tops's version of the song. (I've also deleted it, after giving it a run through.) It's an okay song. Just not one I'm overly fond of. That explains why I couldn't identify the lyrics in question.
(Oh, and btw, Snick. I also d/led the Londonbeat song you recommended. It wasn't too bad.)
np - Here No Evil A Tribute to the Monkees - various artists
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
There is a current TV commercial for Hummer depicting a youngsters go-cart race in which one of the go-carts is a miniature version of a Hummer (and of course leaves the racetrack and takes-off over rough terrain). There is an included song that plays in the background during this commercial which was one of THIS group's early hit songs ... name the song and the group that made the song famous.
Hint: This group is credited for a rock-opera ...
I'd assume it's by The Who, but have no idea as to what the song is (just saw the commercial for the first time yesterday).
Hint #2: Yes, ScottN ... it IS The Who. The song in question has THESE peculiarities about it ...
One of earliest hits (1966) for The Who. Pete Townshend threw maniac drummer Keith Moon out of the recording studio during the laying down of the vocals on this classic single. Keith just couldn't sing, let alone harmonize.
"Happy Jack". At the end of the song, you can hear Towswer exclaim, "I saw ya!" He was refering to Moon the Loon, of course.
"It's all one song." - Neil Young
I think someone needs to start this up again. Here are a few lyric snips from across the genre spectrum. I'd love to see if anyone can get them all (and NO CHEATING by going to www.songlyrics.com).
1. "I open my mouth and out pops something spiteful"
2. "I'm a finder, I'm a keeper, I'm not a loser and I ain't no weeper"
3. "The grabbing hands, grab all they can, all for themselves, after all"
4. "You had to have the last word, last night"
5. "No serenade, no fire brigade, just pyromania"
6. "We're still the same, don't ever change, I want you just the way you are every day now"
7. "Time, I've been passing time watching trains go by"
8. "Those who came before me, lived through their vocation, from the past until completion..."
9. "You gave me fortune, you gave me fame, you gave me power in your god's name"
10. "Look at 'em go, look at 'em kick, makes you wonder how the other half lives"
Some of these should be obvious, but some are more obscure. I honestly don't expect anyone to recognize number 6, but you never know...
5: "Rock of Ages", Def Leppard
7: "Theme from Tootsie" (don't remember the artist)
Because I remembered what #7 was, I cheated at IMDB. Sung by Steven Bishop.
10: "Devil Inside" by INXS
So far those are all right, except the name of 7 is actually "All of my Life."
3. "The grabbing hands, grab all they can, all for themselves, after all"
"Everything counts in large amounts." "Everything Counts" - Depeche Mode. That's actually my favorite song by them.
4. "You had to have the last word, last night"
"Big Shot" - Billy Joel
9. "You gave me fortune, you gave me fame, you gave me power in your god's name"
"Cult of Personailty" - Living Colour. I almost said, "We Are the Champions" by Queen. Then I remembered that that was wrong. Their lyric was "You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it/I thank you all."
I should know #2, but off hand, I can't place it. Good quiz, though, Tom.
np - American IV: The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
"Music is forever." - Paul Simon
Since nobody's tried to answer in a few days, here are the ones nobody got:
1. General Public - "Tenderness"
2. Quiet Riot - "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)"
6. Milky - "Just The Way You Are"
8. New Order - "Blue Monday"
Looks like I was right about no one knowing #6.
2. "I'm a finder, I'm a keeper, I'm not a loser and I ain't no weeper" and 2. Quiet Riot - "Bang Your Head (Metal Health)" - Tom Vane
I knew that lyric was familiar. I just couldn't place it.
Again, good quiz, Tom. Thanks.
np - Listen Like Thieves ) - INXS
"Music is forever." - Paul Simon
I'm running out of things to do on the internet, and this music forum is getting really stagnant (except maybe for the "Day the Music Died" part), so here's some more lyric excerpts.
I'm calling this the "Lyrics Quiz: International Edition" because these artists are from all over the globe. And, none of them are from the US.
Some of these you might look at and think "how the hell you expect us to know THAT?" I promise all of these have, at one time or another, gotten airplay on mainstream US radio.
1. "Gefährlich ist wer Schmerzen kennt, vom Feuer das den Geist verbrennt"
2. "So if you want to talk the night through, guess who will be there?"
3. "They believe that slaves always lose, and that is what keeps them down."
4. "Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof"
5. "Tonight with my spirits, the one that you call, I'm ready to stand up, I'm ready to fall"
6. "Ich fahr am liebstens schwarz"
7. "Say it's true it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one"
8. "Tout est chaos, A côté, Tous mes idéaux : des mots Abimés..."
9. "Where am I to go, now that I've gone too far?"
10. "You're so hot, teasing me, so you're blue but I can't take a chance on a chick like you"
11. "Poso se thelo, Poso mou leipies, Girise se piso, Giati sou leo"
12. "Don't suffocate on your own hate"
I don't think I've heard 1 on the radio, but it was in a major movie soundtrack. In fact, I can think of at least one person here who probably knows it. 2 and 5 were big pop hits when I was in high school (late 90s). 8 isn't that hard, if you listen to the right stuff. If you can think of one French song that ever got played in the US, that's probably it. 11 is, as far as I know, the only Greek song that was ever a US hit. If you watched the 2004 Olympics you probably heard it: they used it as background music during gymnastic routines. Of course, that's little help because in the Olympics they only played it without the words!
I can't believe I forgot this one! The words may not look familiar, but you probably know the song anyway.
13. "Er war Superstar, Er war populär, Er war so exaltiert, Because er hatte Flair"
2. Del Amitri, "Roll to Me"
13. Falco, "Rock Me Amadeus" The German version's much better than the English. :-)
7. "Say it's true it's true...
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one"
"I, I will begin again/I will begin again" - "New Year's Day" - U2
9. "Where am I to go, now that I've gone too far?"
"You will come to know/When the bullet hits the bone." - "Twilight Zone" - Golden Earring
10. "You're so hot, teasing me, so you're blue but I can't take a chance on a chick like you"
"It's something I couldn't do/There's that look in your eyes/I can see in your face that your feelings are drivin' you wild/But girl you're only a child." - "Does Your Mother Know" - ABBA (The only hit one of the guys sang lead on, I do believe.)
np - "Godzilla (demo)" - Buck Dharma
"Music is forever." - Paul Simon
I think I should apologize for 6 and 8. It's like I just walked out of the "mirror universe" and expected people from this universe to know about music in mine.
6 is called "Omnibus" and is credited to someone named "Laut Sprecher" (German for "loudspeaker"). This was apparently a dance club hit a couple years ago or so. The lyrics consisted almost entirely of a child repeating "Ich fahr Omnibus" over and over. Back when Dallas' KDL (106.7) played dance music they really ran this song into the ground.
8 is "Desenchantée" by Kate Ryan, who is from Belgium, although it was originally done by Mylène Farmer. I heard it mostly on European radio stations but also on Energy Arizona FM. I listen to a lot of radio over the internet.
Note to self: if I ever do this again, don't quote songs that I know nobody's going to recognize.
1. Rammstein (Germany) - "Feuer Frei" This was on the XXX soundrack
2. Del Amitri (Scotland) - "Roll to Me"
3. Accept (Germany) - "Balls to the Wall" Accept was a German heavy metal band in the first half of the 80s. Their singer, Udo Dirkschneider, had a high-pitched screech that sounded like that of AC/DC's Brian Johnson.
4. Crowded House (New Zealand) - "Don't Dream It's Over"
5. Amber (Germany) - "This is Your Night"
7. U2 (Ireland) - "New Year's Day"
9. Golden Earring (Netherlands) - "The Twilight Zone"
10. ABBA (Sweden) - "Does Your Mother Know"
11. Despina Vandi (Greece) - "Gia"
12. INXS (Australia) - "Mediate" This of course is the short tag on the end of "Need You Tonight"
13. Falco (Austria) - "Rock Me Amadeus"
Congrats to Snick and Benn for knowing some of these.
Number 8, number 8, number 8, number 8...
