Any nominees?

'Never give up on the good times' from Spiceword, better than some of the songs the Spicies did release as singles. I was blown away by it, & a bit miffed when I heard it wasn't going to released.

Way back in the 1980's (it wasn't that long ago, was it?), when I first listened to Night Ranger's Midnight Madness LP, I thought the track "Let Him Run" was kind of cool... a bit slower and more melodious than the usual Night Ranger fare, which is what made it stand out. Of course, I haven't heard that tune since the 1980's, so I don't know if I'd still like it or have the same reaction.

By Benn on Friday, August 08, 2003 - 11:31 pm:

The next time we get together Craig, I'll have to play it for you. I have that CD.

"It's all one song." - Neil Young

Cool! Please e-mail me so we can work something out.
Oh, and I know this may be a little off-topic, but speaking of Night Ranger reminded me of something... I remember hearing part of an audio track from a movie on one of the Night Ranger songs from the taped copy I had of that album. I never knew if it was actually part of the song, or a bad tape. Of course, I have no recollection of which song it was, but the movie audio sounded like the little girl from Poltergeist. Am I nuts, or is there something to what I heard? (Yeah, I know I'm leaving myself wide open here!)

By CR on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 10:52 am:

By the way, I first listened to the LP while it was being dubbed; later, while listening to the tape, I heard the movie audio. I no longer have either item, so I can't check it out any further.

By Benn on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 10:56 am:

No, it's a real song by Night Ranger. I think the song in question is "Touch of Madness" from their second album, Midnight Madness.

np - Magical Mystery Tour - the Beatles

"It's all one song." - Neil Young

By Benn on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 - 1:23 am:

Yeah, the song you're thinking of Craig, is "Touch of Madness". I haven't heard this disc in awhile. It's nice to dig it out and play it. Thanks for the prompt, Craig.

np - Midnight Madness - Night Ranger ("Sister Christian" is a great song!)

"It's all one song." - Neil Young

Hey, you're welcome!
So there actually is Poltergeist audio on that song? I'm not nuts? (OK, maybe there is that audio, but that doesn't mean I'm not nuts. Ha!)

Some obvious ones: "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin

By ScottN on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 - 5:24 pm:

Uh, I think "Stairway" was considered a "hit".

But was never released as a single.

But you're right.

Rammstein's "Heirate Mich." Beautiful and haunting; very Poe-like.
Megaherz's "Jordan" and "Falsche Götter." Fabulous writing.
Pink Floyd, "The Great Gig in the Sky."
Pink Floyd, "When the Tigers Broke Free."

By Benn on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 2:23 am:

"When the Tigers Broke Free" was released as a single, but a limited edition one. Until last year's Echoes album, it was never widely available. Before that, it could really only be heard in the movie, Pink Floyd - The Wall.

np - "Hang On For Your Life Tonight" - Shooting Star

"It's all one song." - Neil Young

By Hannah F., West Wing Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 2:24 am:

My point exactly.

I love the •••• song.

Oh wow...where do I begin?!

I'd have to say that the most notable example of a band that had album tracks that were better than the songs that were released as singles, and should have been hits, would be Genesis, from 1978-1993.

And yes, I know that when Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 to go solo, lots of people stopped listening to them. But, as it happens, I am a big fan of solo Peter Gabriel, solo Phil Collins, Mike & The Mechanics, and Genesis with Phil Collins, but not Genesis with Peter Gabriel. That's just how I am, I guess!

Anyway, there are many great songs from the Genesis albums on which Phil Collins sang lead that were better, in my opinion, than the actual singles, and should have been hits. And they are:

"Scenes From a Night's Dream" from "...And Then There Were Three"

"Another Record" from "Acacab"

Now, when it comes to their self-titled album, I absolutely HATED the "Mama" and "Illegal Alien" singles. Instead, "Just A Job To Do", "Silver Rainbow" and "It's Gonna Get Better" should have been singles.

Then came their most popular album "Invisible Touch". And with it, at least six hit singles. A great song from this CD that was not a single, but could have been was "Anything She Does".

And then there was "We Can't Dance". Quite frankly, I'm tired of the songs that were singles from this album, because they have been played so often. There were five great songs on this CD that should have been singles. They are:

"Dreaming While You Sleep"
"Tell Me Why"
"Living Forever"
"Way Of The World"
"Fading Lights"

Then, in 1996, Phil Collins left Genesis to conentrate on his solo career. And what did we, the fans, get a year later? A crappy album called "Calling All Stations", with some other singer, whose name eludes me.

However Peter and Phil did reunite briefly for the 1999 version of "The Carpet Crawlers" from their new Hits album. That was cool.

So, there are many other examples I could mention. But just this one will be fine for now, I think!

Here's To Peter Gabriel releasing another studio album (and another new live album wouldn't hurt, either)!

I don't think you really had any trouble beginning.

By Richard Davies on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 12:29 pm:

Queen had a few over the years:

Funny How Love is

Sail Away Sweet Sister

Put Out The Fire

Cool Cat (a b-side that should have been flipped, EMI's A&R work on Hot Space was a bit flaky.)

Keep Passing The Open Windows (Every track on The Works was released as a single, this & Man On The Prowl were b-sides on Thank God It's Xmas, which wasn't)

By Todd Pence on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 9:15 pm:

"Rainbow Man" from Looking Glass's second album in 1973 might have been just as big a smash hit as "Brandy, You're a Fine Girl" was the previous year if they had released it.

By Todd Pence on Monday, June 26, 2006 - 9:16 pm:

As a single, I mean.

By Todd Pence on Friday, July 07, 2006 - 5:42 pm:

Supposedly Gabriel and Collins are supposed to get together for a Genesis reunion in 2007 - not sure how that is going to go.

By ScottN on Friday, July 07, 2006 - 5:49 pm:

I can feel it coming in the air tonight... Gabriel will hit him with a Sledgehammer! :O
