49. I'm Too Sexy -- Right Said Fred
50. My Heart Will Go On -- Celine Dion
I can understand "We Built This City," "The Heart Of Rock & Roll," "Hangin' Tough," and "Barbie Girl," but what are "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," "I'll Be There For You," and "Follow Me" doing on this list? I can think of a lot of worse songs. Like "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. That song deserves to be on this list a lot more than some of the songs that are on it.
And since this is the "I like this song & I don't give a rip what anyone else thinks" board, I'll go ahead and admit I like "Point of no Return" by Exposé. And I might not be the only one, since it still gets played on dance music stations like KDL (Dallas) and KTU (New York).
I don't understand why "The Sound of Silence" is on there at all. I can kind of see the point behind "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"; it is The Beatles' most overrated song, but putting it in with the 50 worst songs? Nope, don't think so.
And where's "MacArthur Park"?
I think the reason that Barbie Girl is on the list is becuase no one appreciates irony anymore.
And NOTHING Simon & Garfunkel did belongs on that list. >:-(
Going over the list again, I'm convinced the poeple at Blender are total [Removed by Roving Mods. Geez Brian, you could make truckers blush couldn't you?].
For the most part, "top lists" in magazines like this are BS. Back in September, Rolling Stone did a "100 Greatest Guitarists" list, where Kurt Cobain had the number 12 spot but Eddie Van Halen was all the way down at 70.
What, nothing by Bobby Goldsboro or Barry Manilow? And except for #2, no country/western songs? (that I know of)
What possible criteria could they have been using?
Yeah, where's Wildfire? A Horse With No Name? Whoop! There It Is? Anything written by Diane Warren..oh, wait, there's From a Distance. So they got one right.
(And how is it that a good 75% of my all-time musical guilty pleasures made it on? Do I have to give back coolness points now? I didn't have that many to begin with...)
As for personal 'I don't care' stuff...Michael Bolton's How Am I Supposed to Live Without You. Also, anything by Chicago. Because Peter Cetera has a really, really nice voice.
Anything written by Diane Warren..oh, wait, there's From a Distance. So they got one right. - kerriem
That's actually a Julie Gold song so...yeah, where's the Diane Warren stuff anyway!!!
Silly list...just designed to get people talking about Blender Mag. That's all I'm going to give them...
Wasn't "Because You Loved Me" written by Diane Warren? Even if it wasn't it should still be up in the top 10.
A Horse With No Name? I love that song!

Like A Virgin: Madonna
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald: Gordon Lightfoot
The Sounds of Silence: Simon & Garfunkel
Right By Your Side: Eurythmics
Would I Lie To You? : Eurythmics
Actually, John A, most of your last couple lists - esp. the stuff by the Eurythmics and Blondie - can be sung aloud in mixed company with no fear whatsoever.
And why on earth are you apologising for acknowledged classics Every Breath You Take and The Sound of Silence(which I suspect only made it onto the above list thanks to a)the shock-value factor and b)the 'overplayed' factor?)
Brian, I love A Horse With No Name too. Absolutely and unreservedly. But you've gotta admit, a big part of what makes it so much fun is that it's a really, really dopey song. (So is Sister Golden Hair, which I also love. Ventura Highway is an improvement, at least until the hovering 'alligator lizards' show up.)
Sex -- Berlin
I still want to know why the guy didn't take some of that time (8 days) he was in the desert and GIVE THE FRIGGIN' HORSE A NAME!!!!
Of course the horse didn't have a name. He was the horse Clint Eastwood rode in all those old Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns. (Y'know, Clint's characters in those films has been refered [erroneously] as "the Man with No Name".) (Not a great joke, I admit. But I tried.)
np - "Zebra" - Jack DeJohnette
"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand."
Snick: I hope that that list you posted way up at the top was just Blender's, and that you don't like all those... "Ebony and Ivory? Yecch!
It is Blender's, and I disagree with a lot of their picks, just not all. I'd post which ones I do like, but'd it be a good portion of the list. :-)
Though I do have to say The Sound of Silence is a great, visionary song.
I, for one, LOVE "Owner Of A Lonely Heart"! It's one of my absolute favorite songs (out of a few hundred favorites of the multi-thousands I've heard in my 26 years on this planet) and I never (so far, anyway) tire of hearing it!
On the Music Catch-Basin, under "Best Instrumentals", regarding Wang Chung's contribution to the soundtrack for the 1985 William Petersen/Willem Dafoe movie "To Live And Die In L.A.", I wrote that I didn't care that Blender magazine had voted Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" the 3rd Worst Song Of All Time! I said that they should know where they can stick it, 'cause I still like that song, and the group itself!
My other favorites by Wang Chung are "Dance Hall Days", "Don't Be My Enemy", "Hypnotize Me" (from the movie Innerspace), and "Let's Go". Regarding this last one, I can remember roller-skating to it, when I was seven, back in 1985!
And a note to John Lang: I also really like Yes' "Leave It". Not to mention "City Of Love", "Rhythm Of Love", "Shoot High, Aim Low", "Almost Like Love", and especially "Love Will Find A Way". That last one almost always gives me chills!
And "Run To You" is my favorite Bryan Adams song!
ICE ICE BABY
or
Girl, You know its true.
I, for one, LOVE "Owner Of A Lonely Heart"!
\aol{Me Too!}
And for some odd reason, Streisand's "My Heart Belongs to Me".
I'm glad to hear there are other "90125" fans out there!
Actually, John, I think it's because I first heard it done by a drum & bugle corps, and just liked the tune.
Actually, I meant to add some time ago that, when I said I remember roller-skating to Wang Chung's "Let's Go!" in 1985, obviously, I was at a skating rink, and they played hit songs of the time for the kids to skate to. And "Let's Go!" was one of the ones I remember.
While I'm on this subject, I also remember roller-skating to Kylie Minogue's "Loco-motion" in either '87 or '88, and yes, I do still kinda like that song, too! That's what this particular portion of the Music board is for, right? Saying what songs you like and that you don't care what others think? Well, I just did, I suppose!
In fact, as well as hard rock and techno-dance music, I also still like the "cheezy" synth-pop that came from the '80's. And that's it from me for now!
Hey, Andre, I'd like to extend a belated welcome to Nitcentral! While I haven't had any comments to make about your posts, I, for one, have been reading them. It's nice to have a new face here. Looking forward to reading more from you.
np - Empty Glass - Pete Townshend
"Music is a world within itself and a language we all understand."
I know the critics hated Rick Astley. I enjoyed his songs.
Rick Astley is a panty-waist.
That's why I had to punch him in the face.
A panty-waist?
In what way?
Uhhh, it's a quote from a song by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper - "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child". In other words, it's joke.
>I'm glad to hear there are other "90125" fans >out there!
Actually, I always thought that "90125" was always the most commercially popular Yes album. It seems that those of us who prefer TFTO are the ones who find ourselves more in the role of apologist.
Oh, Pretty Woman....Roy Orbinson
Isn't She Lovely?....Stevie Wonder
True Colors.....Cyndi Lauper
Time After Time....Cyndi Lauper
From "Blondie"
"Heart of Glass"
"Rapture"
"One Way or Another"
"Atomic"
"The Tide is High"
"Call Me"
Again, John, good songs.
Thanx, Snick. I feel less "freaky" now.
Don't worry, John, you're plenty freaky for preferring D. Troi over the lovely Dr. Beverly Crusher, but your taste in music is quite good. :-)
John - Don't forget Blondie's cover of Lerner and Loewe's "Follow Me" on the "AutoAmerican" album. Debbie Harry's vocals are haunting and mesmerizing.
Me, I find myself listening to REM's "Imitation Of Life" about six times a day lately. I'm trying to make sense of the lyrics, but it's a beautiful song nonetheless. I'm seeing the boys from Athens, Georgia next month. A present to myself on my 50th (!!!) birthday. I hope they do the song as part of their set.
"Rappin' Rodney" by the late Rodney Dangerfield
"King Tut" by Steve Martin
"Take Off!" by Bob & Doug McKenzie
And where's "MacArthur Park"?
The late Richard Harris' version is listenable, if a bit (well, more than a bit) pretentious. Imagine William Shatner doing it. Or, maybe he already did. Donna Summer's disco version may be the worst thing ever recorded.
Mac... ArTHURpark... isMELTing... in... theDARK!
All the dinosaurs are running wiiild!
I hope they do the song as part of their set...
Well, the boys from Athens did do "Imitation Of Life" in concert. They did a good job. But, I still like the studio version better.
Of late, the song I'm ramming into my head is Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."
More faves:
Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
At Seventeen - Janice Ian
Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds
Knock On Wood - Amii Stewart
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads

Blowin' In the Wind - Peter, Paul & Mary
Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler
Take My Breath Away - Berlin
Soul Man - Blues Brothers
Calling All Angels (not sure who it's by).
Disclaimer: I'm biased. The Angels do a video montage before games to this tune.
I believe Train is the band who did "Calling All Angels", Scott.
Anything by Nickleback, epically "Rockstar," "Animals" & even "If Everyone Cared."
At work the other day I heard Miley Cyrus' song "Fly on the Wall" and I really liked it. Her voice in it has that very unnatural studio produced sound that so many of those pop princesses today have. I also know that as an almost 30 year old rock fan I shouldn't like anything from the girl who played Hannah Montana but I think it's a catchy song.
"Seven Things" is not a bad one either- but I know how you feel.
Been getting into Kelly Clarkson's stuff lately too....
Ke$ha's debut single "TiK ToK." It makes me think of my days as a raver/party-kid. Plus I find Kesha to be really hot in a white-trash kinda way.
Neat video too
I really like how her lyrics talk about kicking men to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger while the guy she runs around in the video looks more like "My Name is Earl." Beer goggles for you.
I have Ke$ha's CD and I really like it. I think it's one of the best albums from a new act I've heard in a long time.
The one that has shocked me is Selena Gomez's "Kiss And Tell" album. Some really, REALLY fantastic songs on there.
