Dave Matthews Band

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Misc. Artists/Bands: Dave Matthews Band

Thought I'd add a thread for my very favorite American rock group! (I'm wondering why it wasn't on here already!)

These guys still have it, more than ten years after releasing their independant debut! Then came their big-label debut, an EP, two more albums, a collection of "unfinished sessions", another album, and yet another album, this time including re-recorded versions of the earlier sessions.

Not to mention all the live recordings they've released! I'm still waiting for them to announce that they're in the studio, recording new material!

Also, there's Boyd and Dave's solo albums, also worth a listen. (Just how many covers of "Cinnamon Girl" are there by now, anyway?)

So, does anyone want to contribute to this thread, and lay rest to the mini-rumor that just because Dave released a solo album, the band will soon break up??!! Say it isn't so!!!!

When I post here again, I shall list my favorite tracks from each album. Right now, I'm kind of tired, so you'll hear from me again later!

As promised, I'm back with some more DMB info!

I said that I would list my favorite songs by this band, so here they are-my favorite tracks!

"Recently"
"One Sweet World"
(strangely, I don't like the Ben & Jerry's ice cream based on this song!)
"The Song That Jane Likes" (so do I!)
"Minarets"
"The Best Of What's Around"
"What Would You Say"
"Satellite"
"Dancing Nancies"
"Ants Marching" (for a while, my VERY favorite DMB song)
"Jimi Thing"
"Warehouse"
"#34"
"Two Step"
"Too Much"
"Drive In Drive Out"
"Let You Down"
"Lie In Our Graves"
"Tripping Billies"
"Rapunzel"
"The Last Stop"
"Don't Drink The Water"
"Stay (Wasting Time)"
"Crush"
"The Dreaming Tree"
"Sweet Up & Down" (Lillywhite Session)
"JTR" (Lillywhite Session)
"I Did It"
"Dreams Of Our Fathers"
"What You Are"
"Fool To Think"
"Busted Stuff" (re-recorded version)
"Grey Street" (re-recorded version)
"Bartender" (re-recorded version)

Also, the solo Boyd Tinsley effort "True Reflections". My favorite off of that is "It's Alright". And my favorite from Dave's solo CD, "Some Devil" is "Dodo". He sounds pretty good on his own, too!

Two more things about Dave that I thoght I'd mention, mostly personal opinion.

One: I really thought that his editorial on the Iraq war fiasco (before it actually started) was extremely well thought out and written, and very necessary. Not that it means much these days, but I recommend checking the official DMB site to see if it's still there. He spoke out against censorship and oppression which is always needed and frankly, quite welcome in these uncertain and troubled times.

And Two: Why couldn't it have been DAVE MATTHEWS starring opposite the extremely attractive and talented (past legal troubles notwithstanding) Winona Ryder in "Mr. Deeds" instead of that talent-lacking Adam Sandler schmuck??!! I mean, Dave could EASILY have played the role to the hilt, you saw how well he does a comedic role, like, say for example, the "I Did It" video? And I would much rather have seen Mr. Matthews get to kiss Nonie in the video for "Where Are You Going" instead of Sandler, because...well, just because!

(Actually, these days, Ms. Ryder is maintaining a relatively low profile, for reasons not quite known. Funny, last I knew, I thought she was dating some here-today-gone-tomorrow flash-in-the-pan rock star again. I wouldn't put it past her!

The bottom line is that Johnny Depp was a complete moron for dumping her oh-so many years ago. If I could meet up with Mr. Hunk Beefcake Stud Muffin, I'd tell him to his face "Never mind about that Pirate B.S., Johnny Boy, "YOU'RE A MORON!!!!"

Once again, I've drifted far away from the original topic. Bottom Line: It should have been Dave starring opposite Nonie in that mediocre movie. That's what I think!

And here's to the next Dave Matthews Band studio album, as they've already saturated the market with live albums. Bring on some more original material, guys!

Hello again. I'm here just to briefly say that I didn't really like "Stand Up" that much. As you can see above, in my last post on this thread, I asked them to "bring on some more original material". And now that they have, I think it's very inferior to their earlier albums. "Before These Crowded Streets" for example.

In fact, "American Baby" is the only song that I can easily hear again and again. I don't understand why these guys couldn't just continue with the style that made them popular in the first place.

Just my 2 cents.

Just a quick note in reference to one of my earlier posts on this board, and yes, it's a bit off-topic. But I've got to get this off my chest.

I don't know FOR SURE if Johnny dumped Nonie, or if it was the other way around. But now, these days, I don't really care. They have both gotten on with their lives as best they could, or course in her case, with some obstacles along the way, and now nobody goes to see her movies anymore, and as a result, she's maintaining a low profile. Depp, on the other hand......

Well, see for yourself. In my area "Pirates 2" is STIll in the first run theatre! And when did it debut? Six months ago! Wow, cool! Anyway, his career is thriving and flourishing, and I take back what I said about him earlier. He is NOT a moron!

BTW, I absolutely LOVED "Secret Window"!

Here's to "Pirates 3" being a smashing, phenomenal success, just like the first two!

Oh, and I can't even afford all of Dave's live albums, I have to stick to the studio ones, although "Stand Up" was kinda lousy! (There, I'm not being off-topic anymore, am I?)

Very tragically, DMB saxophonist Leroi Moore died recently from internal injuries sustained after getting into an accident whilst riding an ATV.

I really do wonder just what will happen to the rest of the band now. Will they continue on and not get a placemnt, or will they break up?

And all this happened when the band was in the middle of recording a new album, too. It's really sad, I think.

R.I.P. Leroi Moore

By Andre the Aspie on Sunday, September 07, 2008 - 5:24 pm:

That should be "replacement".

By Andre the Aspie on Saturday, May 02, 2009 - 8:27 pm:

Their new album comes out in June. It has a weird title, and I can't remember it right now.

I hope it will sell well, seeing as how it's dedicated to Leroi Moore's memory.

I like The Dave Mathews Band, seen them in concert twice in Atlanta loved both shows.

Here's something about Dave and his music that I've been thinking about.

I really don't think that Dave writes his songs just for women, as he has been accused of doing.

People who think that are merely jealous of his success. They can't stand the fact that he has made multi-millions doing something he loves to do, and with something he is good at to boot.

There's something I read called "Don't Be That Guy", and the authors opined that Dave's music is about seducing and getting in the panties of his lady fans, and how none of it appeals to men!

And that if it is liked by men, those men are "pussywhipped freaks of nature" and that we are now officially "out of The Man Club".

Funny, comedian Bill Hicks said the same thing back in 1993, but it was about men "who want children". Perhaps he meant the true abnormal freak kind of man who actually wants to be pregnant and give birth, I think that is what Hicks was taking about.

Anyway, Dave is all man and nothing but man, and the ladies love him, so what? It don't matter to me! He's married and has 2 or 3 kids, he's a true family man as well.

And what the authors of that book did not take into account was that it was written before the death of Leroi Moore, and I would think that Dave would show definite emotion at the memorial service or at the mention or Moore's name. That does not make HIM, or ANY of his male fans, ANY less of a man!

So, in closing, I don't think that I'm a sissy wimpy wuss for being a fan of the DMB. They have been extremely successful for over 15 years, and I look forward to the release of their new CD!

By AMR on Monday, July 06, 2009 - 7:42 pm:

DMB's new CD "Big Whiskey & The Groogrux King" has come out, and I like it. It has a cool opening track, and the other songs are really good as well.

So, maybe others here could say wohat they think of it. OK?

By Andre Reichenbacher (Amr) on Wednesday, June 05, 2013 - 11:04 pm:

Well, it's finally come to this for this group. Last year their new album "Away From The World" was released, to virtually no fanfare whatsoever. At least where I live, there wasn't any.

It seemed as though the record label couldn't be bothered to advertise and promote the band's new album this time around. Especially seeing as how, back in 2009 when "BWATGK" was released (see my above post) it sold poorly compared to the heyday of "Under The Table & Dreaming", "Crash" and my all-time favorite by them "Before These Crowded Streets". Even though I happened to like it, that one didn't sell well at all. And it was dedicated to the late Leroi Moore and everything. Oh well.

But this new one? There was no publicity or promotion for it at all, it seemed. Fifteen years ago, a new DMB album would have been a pretty big deal, you know what I mean? Nowadays, it seems as if the public's music tastes have changed. Nobody seems to like jam-based pop-rock anymore. And that's bad news for men like Dave Matthews.

It appears as if he and musicians like him are now obsolete and no longer relevant in the world today. After all, the popularity of music styles are cyclical. What sold in the last two decades (i.e. the DMB and groups like them) won't necessarily still be popular and profitable now, or in the future. It's a sad truth, and it pretty much applies to other mediums of entertainment as well.

So does this mean that DMB's time is up? That they are relics of a bygone period in time? Or do they still have a few more tricks up their proverbial sleeves?

You know, this situation reminds me of what happened to the excellent Australian band INXS back in the early-mid 90s. They had a great sound, Michael Hutchence was considered to be the Aussie Jim Morrison (and was 11 when Jim died, BTW). They continued with the style of hard rock that had made them popular in the 80s, and by the time grunge and alternative rock took over as the hot new thing in music, they were left in the dust, their albums no longer selling the way they had in the previous decade. Still, they managed to survive until 1997, when they released an album that was one of the lowest selling of their careers, and Hutchence was found dead of a suspected suicide. Anyway, INXS, it seemed, also failed to evolve and were therefore also declared obsolete. It's really too bad that their lead singer had to die on top of all that, know what I mean?

Oh well. Anyway, just my opinions. That's the music biz for you!
