DualDiscs

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Music: Music Catch-Basin: DualDiscs

I just found out about these the other day, but they're probably already old news by now, huh? ;) And if there's already another thread about these then I'll just delete this one.

Anyway, in case you didn't know, they're a single disc that's a CD on one side and a DVD on the other. At first I thought it'd just be one of each in a single package. The first three I've seen are from Jennifer Lopez ("Rebirth"), Judas Priest ("Angel Of Retribution") and AC/DC (Back In Black) at Target, though a search for "DUALDISC" on Amazon presented 96 results. At work we have to tell customers about the disclaimer on the back warning that the CD side may not play in all players. This is to avoid them trying to return the albums claiming that they're defective and wanting to exchange them for another copy, in which the same thing would happen again, of course.

Do any of you have any of these and if so then what do you think about them?

I just got Avril Lavinge's "Under My Skin" on Dual Disc. I think it's great; all CD's should be released this way. It's the same cost as a regular CD, and you get all that extra material. Here's a nit, or maybe it's a complaint. The album is on the DVD side, as well as the CD side. Pictures of Avril Lavinge are displayed as you play the album on the DVD side. Maybe there could be a secondary screen where the lyrics scroll up the screen...? Would that be too much trouble?
I wonder why they say why the CD side won't work in all CD players. It works fine on my laptop PC, and my DVD player.

It's effectively two discs glued together, "back to back" & in theory could warp, & therefore jam in slot loading players...
There have been reports of these discs jamming in the slot of some DVD players, & car audio CD units.
Also, the DVD Forum does not recognise Dual Disc as a Dvd Format....
(Reason, the thickness of the Dual Disc exceeds the defined tolerances for DVD-Format discs).,

I was looking at my Avril Lavigne Dual Disc, and there is an obvious seam on the edge, which I never noticed before. I have yet to play the CD side in my car, and I may not. It can't possibly perform any worse than the few hybrid CD/SACD's I bought, which did jam in my car player. I just hope the glue holding the disc halves together doesn't deteriorate with age.

Bruce Springsteen's latest, "Devils and Dust," was in stores today. It seems that it was issued solely in the Dual Disc format, a nice statement from such a major artist. The DVD side has the entire album in 5.1 surround, and the lyrics are displayed on the TV screen as the song plays.

They've just launched the "Dual Disc" format in Europe, abeit a very, very "low key" launch...
There is a difference between the European "Dual Disc" & the U.S version, in that the European version will NOT have any video on the DVD portion of the disc...
The Euro version, instead, will have a equivalent set of DVD-Audio encoded tracks to the "CD" side...
(Basically, the music distrubitors in Europe are trying to bail out DVD-Audio as a format, as sales of high end audio formats such as DVD-Audio & Sony's SACD have largely failed to "take off" due to problems with categorisation of the formats...)

So, whatever happened to ths format? Did it die a slow death? I ask this because Stevie Nicks' recent hits collection Crystal Visions was released with a CD and a separate DVD, instead of as a Dual Disc.

Guess what, Adam. A few years ago I bought the Dave Matthews Band album "Stand Up" and yes, it was a DualDisc. Actually, they also released that album on a regular CD as well. I'm saying that I liked the DD format better!

As for what has happened to this particular format, I'm not sure if it is dead yet or not. Your guess is as good as mine, it seems!

Also, does anybody remember the "Enhanced CD" format that was all the rage in the mid-late '90's? I thought that was pretty cool, especially when one has a computer to view the extra videos that the Enhanced CD's had. I do believe that they are not released that way anymore, for some reason.

Does anyone know for sure if DualDiscs are done for, or what?
