Blame It On Ryo

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Digimon: Digital Monsters: Season Three: Blame It On Ryo
Rika, Kazu, Kenta and Renamon wait by Takato's flag, hoping that Takato and the others will come by. Rika decides to go off and try to find their missing friends. Kazu and Kenta follow. Unfortunately, right after they leave, Takato and the others arrive the flag and find no one. But Guilmon smells Renamon and they all follow the trail.

Rika, Kenta, Kazu and Renamon are sucked into another data stream and find themselves in an area of the Digital World with lots of clouds and clocks. They find a clock that has stopped. Rika moves the hands of the clock and all the gears act up. Megadramon, an ultimate Digimon, appears.

Renamon digivolves to Kyubimon, but is still no match for the Ultimate Digimon. Suddenly, Cyberdramon arrives out of nowhere and battles Megadramon, causing him to retreat.

Ryo, Cyberdramon's Tamer, appears. He orders Cyberdramon to calm down. While everyone else treats Ryo as a hero, Rika resents him. She leaves with Kyubimon, not wanting anything to do with him.

Calumon rejoices when he finds Takato's flag.

The title is a pun on a bad movie called Blame It On Rio. However what does the title refer to in the episode? What did Ryo do? Stopping the gears was the fault of Rika, Kazu & Kenta, not Ryo. Maybe the title refers to Rika blaming Ryo for... being perfect?

You know, I was gonna ask why Kyubimon didn't digivolve to Ultimate, then I remembered she would need Calumon for that.

The writers have never really needed much of an excuse to make the title of an ep a reference before. I mean, what does Kazu and Kenta's Excelent Adventure have to do with Bill and Ted's simillarly Excelent Adventure aside from the staring idiot's? What's more, why doesn't Rika get to share in the adventure?

I just come from the school of thought that believes the title should have something to do with the story & it just bugs me when it doesn't. Clearly TPTB on this show come from the "Who Cares?" school of titling.

I almost complained about Kazu & Kenta's Excellent Adventure, but decided against it. I mean it did have Kazu & Kenta and they did seem to be having an Excellent time, even if staying in a house overnight is a poor excuse for an Adventure (at least in a children's show), so I let it slide. However this ep says Blame It On Ryo & as far as I can tell he didn't do anything that he could be blamed for & that annoyed me enough to consider it a nit.

Hey, since when have we needed another reason to pick a nit?

So, just what sort of shape is the Digital World, anyway? I can't figure out how the information presented in this episode can come together as one entity. Think about it. For the past several episodes, big blue real world portal whatsit has seemed rather close to the Digital World, at least it took up a pretty good chunk of the sky. But when Rika and co. are shot into the clockwork land, the thing is MUCH farther away. Not only does it take up much less of the sky, but the Data Streams don't even come close to touching the ground (more on that later). Here's the thing: if we're far enough away to see the thing from that distance, then it seems like we should be able to see the land that was beneath it, as well as the land that stretched out to it. And before you ask, the Digiworld can't be spherical (even though that's what the horizon suggests) because then our big blue thing would remain the same size and just be at a lower point on the horizon. Instead, it's smaller yet still overhead. I just don't see how this could occur on a globe. But, that still leaves the question of what shape it really is and why we can't we see any of it over clock land. (I suppose that the Digiworld could be a bunch of unconected islands, but then shouldn't we a least see the sandy patch of land the last few episodes happened on?)

Speaking of the added distance, the Data Streams clearly stop a long way above the ground. So how did Rika, Kazu, and Kenta manage to to get there?

Now, I realize that there's not much point in worrying about the logic of some things in the Digital World, but shouldn't starting the clock START the gears and stoping the clock STOP them?

And, along with that thought, why did Designated Antagonist of the Episode wait for the gears to start moving to apear? It seems like it would be easier to move with the stuff still.

Okay, so about Ryo: To gather up information from various discussions on this board, mine, and other parts of my site: Ryo stared a series Bandai Wonderswan Digimon games in Japan (we never got the Wonderswan in the western world), one of which was called “Tag Tamers”. Interestingly enough, his co-star wasn’t a “Tame” at all, but Ken Ichijouji! Obviously, Ken turned up in 02, and Ryo turns up briefly in flashbacks of Ken’s history. However, no one really explains who he is or what he’s up to in that show. However, another Woderswan game called “Brave Tamer” explains that he was hurled into the past and woke up with amnesia with Monodramon. At the climax of the game, Ryo’s nemesis Millenniummon (whom he is seen fighting with Ken) reveals that he was supposed to be Ryo’s partner. At the end, the two Digimon DNA Digivolve and produce a Digiegg that eventually leads to Cyberdramon. Presumably, this checkered past explains why Cyberdramon is so hostile, but the sheer number of inconsistencies it creates are astounding. How could a character start out in 02 and be in Tamers? Tamers says 01/02 never happened outside of TV and video games! Did those guys Bandai sends to Hypnos to watch the Digiworld see Ryo and write some games around him, adding the 02 connections on their own? But then how could Cyberdramon be the result of something that hadn’t been written yet? And if the games preceded Ryo’s little adventure, then why didn’t he ever notice this character who happened to have the exact same name and face as him? Alas, all the great nits probobly must go unpicked, as they never actually say Ryo’s name in 02 and we didn't get any of the Wonderswan games in America, so there’s really no connection we can make without cheating and using stuff that we never actually saw. Drat.
