More Than Just a Duel in the Forest: Miscellanious Fan Films

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Star Wars: Parodies, Fan Films, Etc.: More Than Just a Duel in the Forest: Miscellanious Fan Films
By Zarm Rkeeg on Wednesday, June 08, 2005 - 11:33 am:

This is a board for the myriad Star Wars Fan Films out there, mostly on Theforce.net/theater.
Obviously, we could probably crash the entire Nitcentral server if we tried to make a board for each one, so here's a thread for whichever ones you'd care to discus.

Both IMPS: The Relentless (a sequel, of sorts, to the famous first fan film, TROOPS) and Star Wars: Revelations have just been released, as well as Sins of the Jedi: Part 2.

WOW.

Some awesome production values on all 3.

I remember the days when a guy in his backyard with a bathrobe Jedi costume and a plastic lightsaber could make a fan film to compete with the rest of the current contenders.
Those days are dead.
Shot-in-the-face-with-a-gattling-gun dead.
Nuclear-device-stuffed-in-it's-jaw-bone dead.

Very dead.

On the other hand, I'm not necessarily complaining... it was a pretty heavy bathrobe anmyway. ;-)

Also on the waiting list (as they have been, and may continue to be forever) are some of the more anticipated releases:
The next installment of Super Console Wars (probably never coming)
Tydirium: The True Story (Is it EVER going to get here?)
and How the Sith Stole Christmas, Parts II and III (ditto)

Fortunately, we still have many of the classics around, such as Duality (still unbeaten), Legacy of the Jedi (the funniest fan-film, IMHO) The Formula (with it's own radio series, no less,) The Jedi Hunter (an instant classic,) Seeds of Darkness 1-3 (a starfighter battle! Whooo!) and the Empire Strikes Back Yard (with closing musical number!)

So, fan films past, present, or future... let's get the conversation started!

Oh, and if you're looking for Nitcentral's very own parody/fanfilms, go to:

Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, Etc.

The Gate Room (a.k.a.) The SG-1 Sink

And check out The Penguin Goa’uld episode.

Make sure to start on board 1... the fanfilms begin about 1/2way down.

And enjoy... :-)

Specifically, it's Zarm's post:

I just now saw a funny parody, Grocery Store Wars. It's about eating organically grown foods instead of store bought...unless it's an organic store buy, of course. Anyway, check out Cuke, Obi Wan Canoli, Chewbroccoli, the wise old Yogurt, and yes, even Darth Tater, though made with a real potato, not a plastic Mr. Potato Head.

BTW, I dunno if this has already been posted elsewhere and I've not the time to look right now so please forgive me if it's been posted before.

Yes, I saw that, too... very impressive. And, it would appear, budgeted as well. Lucky %$#%^%s...

Just found this on youtube, it may be old news but in case it's not, go to youtube and search for lightsaber dorkman and run the Ryan vs Dorkman lightsaber battle. It's amazing.

Alternatively, google 'lightsaber ryan dorkman'.

Chad Vader's managed to make me laugh a time or two.

Okay, this is it. You GOT to see this!

And this is the rematch! (I think they should've played different characters, maybe by changing their looks somehow, but the heck with it, it's still awesome!

The opening logo sequence also looks more professional too.

This is what I posted on the site for part 2:

Holy @#$%^&*! It was even better than the first one! What I love is that you guys really seem to understand not just the choreography and saber fx (which itself is of pro-level quality), but also of WRITING. The viewer never knows what's going to happen. Just when one combatant seems to have the upper hand, is the other is surely to die, you find a way to not only turn the tables, but to do so in a way that's consistent with the premises.

You also do a great job of incorporating the entire environment in the duel (like the staircase and wall), but write the duel by coming up with your own musings or permutations of saber duels ("What would happen if a saber tip touched a puddle of water?" What if one guy force grabbed a saber with the business end pointed at himself, and his opponent turned it on?")

When you see stuff like that guy shooting up sparks at his opponent just to psych him, it's clear that you not only speak the language that Lucas invented, but are able to EXPAND on it yourselves. I don't know if this is a hobby or a professional vocation, but he'd be lucky to have you guys in his stable. Your duels are more interesting than the ones in his prequel trilogy.

If you look around you can also see other fan films, but the best are by this Ryan Wieber dude. They even have behind-the-scenes videos on YT, including one showing them getting the video scored at Capitol ecords! (It's at youtube.com/watch?v=FQt1DpEUrV8&NR=1) I don't know how they got a professional orchestra to do this (Did they save up the money? Do they know someone? Are they not pros themselves?), but I did kinda notice how professional the score sounded, and how it didn't sound like it was lifted from one of the movie soundtracks.

Here are some more:

Here's a study of Wieber's staff work, including real-time and slow-motion footage of different moves at different angles:

This duel's near a forest:

Another duel film. The sound doesn't sync up right with the visuals, and the soundtrack sounds more suited to a spaghetti Western or neo-noir film by Tarantino or Rodriguez, but it's still good, and the choregraphy is faster:

I liked this one's ending:
