SPOILERS: What Obi-Wan was doing between Episode 3 and Episode 4.

CONTINUITY ERROR:

When another Jedi finds "Ben", he says, "The time of the Jedi is over". However, moments later, "Ben" tells Owen that Luke must be trained. If "it's over", why now the sudden urge to train Luke?

SPOILERS

In Episode 1, Obi Wan works at a fish meat marketing plant in the middle of the desert. I don't know how long that fish was there, but wouldn't the meat go bad after a while? What about maggots?

Thar be SPOILERS here

JAL: I don't know how long that fish was there, but wouldn't the meat go bad after a while?
Not only that, but processing the... sand manta-thing (why not a more logical creature like a lizard?) shouldn't take more than a day anyway. Plus, Ben is always the last one to leave and takes a slice with him every day, and the foreman says nothing?

It's only been two episodes so far, but there's a severe lack of Force use in this show. Kenobi not using it is understandable, but not from all the other Force users. Also, hand gestures are not a requirement for the Force either. It would've been far more interesting to see the Inquisitors find the Jedi in the beginning bar scene through the Force rather than 'oh hey it's the guy holding his hand up.'

For anybody who's watched the show Rebels, this isn't the same Grand Inquisitor. This one is a dumbed-down version with no menace or backbone. He was retconned this way here to artificially boost the importance of the Third Sister, or Reva. Creating a new character is difficult, but it seems the only way current writers know how to interpose new with old is to make established characters incompetent. He was put in charge of the Inquisitors because he had far more experience as a Jedi than any of the others, and he was the primary antagonist in Rebels where he died. Rebels is far from my favorite SW property, but the Grand Inquisitor was made for that show, so to see him punked in a different show to make room for a brand new character is just a little annoying, though not surprising.

We've seen a great deal of the Inquisitors in Rebels and the Vader comics, amongst others, with no sign of the Third Sister anywhere. Since SW is now supposed to be 'one continuity' as the story group claims, I'm sure LFL will come up with some brilliant reasoning for her sudden appearance.

Ben clipping his lightsaber to his belt like he used to isn't a great idea. A light breeze or passerby brush-up can easily expose it. So there's no security guarding an entrance to the royal palace on Alderan? Yeah, sorry but don't buy it. When escaping at the end of episode 2 (or is it going by chapters?) all Reva had to do is call one of the orbiting Imperial ships and that would've been that.

On a positive note, it's great to see Ewan McGregor back as Obi-Wan! He's doing a fantastic job, and my fingers are crossed that he stays the main character in his own show.

EPISODE 3 (SPOILER)

At the checkpoint, Obi-Wan flips his hood up in front of the Stormtroopers.

If "Ben" is trying to maintain a low profile, why is he making himself look more like a Jedi?

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Thursday, June 02, 2022 - 10:13 am:

Nope. Kenobi and Vader did not face off between RotS & ANH. There's an interview with George during one of the Celebrations, I think 3, where he said "they haven't seen each other in almost twenty years..." but now I can't seem to find it even though it was available a couple weeks ago. Strange. Regardless, since GL isn't the most reliable source anyway, the line in ep 4 "when last we met I was but the learner, now I am the master" is now meaningless. Can anyone honestly say that Vader was acting as a 'learner' during this? They even go to the trouble of mentioning a fan favorite, Quinlan Vos; why couldn't he be the one to meet Vader? Speaking of Vader, why did he kill those two civilians? Sure, he's the villain, but he doesn't go around randomly killing people for no reason.

It seemed odd to me that Reva needed permission from the other inquisitors to launch more probe droids. Why not just order the officer tasked with that function?

The part where Ben was reminiscing about his life before going to the Jedi Academy, he mentions maybe having a brother. While this was declared apocryphal long ago, the RotJ established that Owen Lars is actually his brother... just an interesting aside.

During the end scene, Vader is torturing Ben in fire when it suddenly goes out; presumably by the Force. Seconds later, a blaster shot starts the the flames again, in order to rescue Obi-Wan, yet Vader seems powerless to do anything about it this time. No use of the Force to pull Kenobi toward him, or even stop the droid he can clearly see?

In Episode 1, after Leia is kidnapped, Bail and his wife contact Obi-Wan via holograph and say, "No ransom, no leads". However, later in the episode, Bail shows up in person and says, "She's headed for Daiyu."

JAL: ANSWER...
Touché John! Thank you for that.

Episode 4 is upon us, and the continuity massacre continues, with SPOILERS!
Leia is interrogated by the Third Sister, and Reva claims that Obi-Wan is dead. Leia only knows him as Ben, yet she doesn't flinch or question who Obi-Wan is. Due to this, now one of the most iconic scenes in all of SW, Leia's message to Obi-Wan in ANH, seems downright illogical the way it was worded. I am aware that at least two people call him Obi-Wan while Leia is nearby, but she always seemed to be out of earshot.

Ben and what's-her-face infiltrate the Inquisitorious Maximus, or whatever the heck it's called, and it's almost as close a ripoff of ANH as TFA was (which is fitting I suppose considering this is also ep 4). Since a precedent was set for some of the things I took issue with, I'll just mention how casually the lady turncoat was chatting on her comlink without anybody becoming suspicious. The escape however was fraught with unbelievability. There's a security breach and nobody notices an extra pair of legs under a long jacket, worn by a man with a beard (not many Imperial officers have beards in all of SW). Also, are there no external armaments, scanners, or patrolling TIE fighters to protect the fortress? A ship can just approach, launch two speeders to attack the landing bay and depart without a single defensive measure? The fight choreography in this entire ep is quite wooden as well.

Last, but certainly not least, is Obi-Wan's use of the Force. At the end of RotS, Kenobi was tasked to protect Luke, and potentially train him if/when the time came, but also to commune with Qui-Gon and learn how to become one with the Force. If anything, Ben should become stronger in the Force during his exile to succeed with this mission, not be in the position he is portrayed in this show as he struggles to do very simple things. He's more adept with physical combat than he is with the Force, and it should be the other way around.

On a positive note, it was really neat/creepy to see all the "trophies" in the form of people and collected lightsabers at Inquisitor HQ (I'll learn the name someday). I don't recall if that was an idea from the comics or if it was original, but it was a nice touch either way.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Thursday, June 09, 2022 - 10:18 am:

I'd like to clarify my rant regarding the departure from the black spire of doom. Reva telling Vader that she "let them go" didn't escape my notice, but that was either a lie or an incredible plot contrivance... or both.

The sequence of events were: Reva interrogates Leia, moves to torture her, was interrupted by Tala (learned her name!), then that is cut short by an alarm where Reva leaves to gather troops to converge at the landing bay. All this takes place over the course of about 15 minutes show time; when did she concoct this plan to plant a tracker, or even feel the need to? Was part of that plan to "let them go" involve calling the attention of a few dozen stormtroopers? There was neither the time nor logical reason for her to plant that bug, and Vader should've seen right through all of this nonsense. Another question is why someone grabbed Leia's cloak with the droid in the first place, but that's the least of the issues here.

Something else that stood out upon further reflection is how did those troopers die in the flooded hallway? Despite the way it looks on live action, their helmets are actually enclosed and have advanced optical and respiratory equipment within, so they wouldn't have drowned. I suppose it's possible the influx of water could've crushed them, but it didn't appear to be that forceful considering Kenobi was able to jog ahead of it, so their armor should protect them fine.

EPISODE 5 (SPOILERS)

Reva orders a Laser Howitzer to take out the Rebel Blast door. It does not work very well.

Why didn't she do that in the first place?

SPOILER:

Obi-Wan is a wanted man by the Empire, yet Obi-Wan walks around area in his Jedi robes instead of travelling Incognito

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Friday, June 17, 2022 - 11:57 am:

Episode 5 is definitely an improvement over... pretty much the rest of the show, but the tidbits of much needed exposition still doesn't make sense with the rest of the story.

Reva evidently knows Anakin is Vader because she saw him at the Temple and played dead to survive. The 501, who went to the Temple with him, knows him as Anakin, so there's no reason they'd call him Vader and we don't hear anybody call him that in either this ep or RotS. Reva's obsession in catching Kenobi specifically is also strange to the point of seeming contrived. She blames him for not being there during Order 66, despite the fact he was on Utapau at the time and that other Jedi were there trying to protect them. Sure, younglings may not know the assignments of masters, but she'd know Anakin wasn't his padawan for about three years, so if there's anyone to blame for the loss of her 'family' it should be the person she works for! How did she become an Inquisitor without anybody sensing this? Adding to that, if Vader could "see that coming" why didn't he just kill her in the last episode, or this one for that matter? It's out of character and downright silly. Seems the only person who doesn't survive what should be a fatal lightsaber wound is Qui-Gon.

Some technical nits: apparently a simple tracking device, that can pulled off with a slight tug, also alters the software of Lola the droid, as it knows how and where to sabotage the bay doors. This software also disappears when the bug is pulled off. Why is that very important circuit room so small and difficult to reach? What would make that guy think it would take 2-3 hours to repair (with Ben only giving him one in funny Trek fashion) without even diagnosing the problem? Why would a 10 year-old from a royal family even be interested to gain the knowledge of fix electrical systems, let alone actually have it?

More to follow!

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Friday, June 17, 2022 - 1:17 pm:

JAL: Reva orders a Laser Howitzer to take out the Rebel Blast door...
Adding to that John, with the unlimited resources of the Empire, I'm sure they have a device specifically designed to burn through blast doors... other than a lightsaber of course. Plus, how could Reva and Obi-Wan hear each other whispering through a reinforced door? Were they supposed to be using the Force and talked for our benefit? If so, there are other/better ways to show that.

So they breach the doors, creating a bottleneck at the entrance, yet neither side takes advantage of this with suppressing fire. There should be a pile of stormtroopers blocking the way, since of course they die in one shot while un-armored people are granted more dramatic deaths.

In true Vader excellence, he pulls a transport ship out of the air with the Force as it attempts to take off, then proceeds to rip it apart to find nobody inside. Then a second, identical ship takes off and he just stands there. Why couldn't he do it again, or at least crush the engines? Using the Force as a plot convenience is nothing new, but there has never been any limitations established to its use (other than in video games). What would've made this scene work is for him to attempt to stop the second ship, only for that to be the moment Reva attacks him.

Speaking of Reva, her 180 in ideology was faster and more unbelievable than Anakin's. It happened after a 30 second conversation with Ben. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by a six-episode series that has no plot or story, relying solely on contrivances (like the comlink at the end), but there it is.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Monday, July 04, 2022 - 6:18 am:

One of the downfalls of this series is the lack of John Williams' iconic score. I know he composed the opening theme, but we didn't get any of his "meat and potatoes" until the last episode

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Tuesday, July 05, 2022 - 7:34 pm:

I haven't been able bring myself to watch the final episode... though I have seen a few clips. The worst thing I could say about Book of Boba Fett is that it was disappointing, bordering on dull. This show on the other hand was just plain bad; I'd even go as far to say objectively bad. I know that's a scary word to use for some when discussing highly subjective topics such as TV shows and movies, but it can be articulated in much the same way as The Last Jedi.

The pacing went nowhere (no buildup or payoff to speak of), the new characters were bland, their motivations unclear, no plot to speak of, easily avoidable continuity/lore breaking dialog and actions... this time however we can also add poor fight choreography and a complete lack logic to practically every action taken in the show.

I suppose this shouldn't surprise anybody considering the head writer didn't watch RotS, and the director was unaware that Kenobi knew Anakin was Vader, amongst other things, but I imagine that there are scores of amateur writers out there who are SW fans who could've written a better show, and at a reduced price. The concept of this show was to find a way for an unnecessary Kenobi v. Vader fight; everything else was window dressing.

Tim - The Mouse is determined to s*ck this franchise dry.'

Well, Tim, since I've seen this series (and it's great last episode Kenobi/Vader light saber/Force fight, as well as both seasons of The Mandalorian, I wondered why anybody wouldn't want more Star Wars in their lives. It was like saying less Star Trek, less Doctor Who, less OXYGEN to breathe...
Then I watched one of my favorite youtubers, Ryan George and his Pitch Meeting for Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that led me to an article on Screenrant...
And I found this...
All 9 Star Wars TV Shows Releasing After Obi-Wan Kenobi:
1. Andor.
2. Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2.
3. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.
4. The Mandalorian Season 3.
5. Young Jedi Adventures.
6. Ahsoka.
7. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
8. The Acolyte.
9. Lando.
Nine series.
NINE SERIES, PEOPLE!!!! It IS too much.
Tim was right. Let the sucking begin.

(grumblegrumble, And I thought CBS were overdoing it with Star Tre! grummblegrumble)

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Tuesday, November 08, 2022 - 8:09 pm:

I'd like to see this board shifted over to the Star Wars - TV section, so it can be alongside The Mandalorian and other Star Wars series.

AWhite criticisms are valid, I suppose, since I'm not nearly the Star Wars fan he appears to be. I have more Star Trek and Doctor Who knowledge, it turns out, than I have Star Wars facts.
However, I really enjoyed this series, and as it progressed it became more and more Star Warsisn to me. We have Ewan McGregor, the actor established as the younger Obi-Wan, we have Hayden Christensen back as Anakin Skywalker, and in the Darth Vader suit, a younger Princess Leia and her paremts, Senator and Mrs. Organia, a younger Luke Skywalker and his aunt and uncle, the Emperor, stormtroopers, star destroyers, Imperial scouts, light saber duels, and visits to Tatooine, Alderaan, and other planets.
Honestly, I don't know what people were hoping for. Maybe they wanted Luke to be a main character and are just being stubborn about it, but in my opinion Vivien Lyra Blair, who plays young Leia is a great little actress. She even has a bunch of credits, having started acting at age 5! I didn't even mind when she seemed to act a little older than she was, or a little smarter than an average kid, but then this is Princess Leia, who hasn't exactly had a normal childhood.
And while some may have an issue with a Kenobi who seems to be living a dreary life and lacks his former Force powers, I say to them, "Keep watching!" It's what would be called 'A Hero's Journey', where we see them at their lowest, and slowly regain their former glory.
Maybe that's what fans wanted-- a super-powerful Obi-Wan Kenobi for all 6 episodes alongside a younger Luke Skywalker, but this is a new story and a very good one. I'm even disappointed it couldn't be just a few more episodes longer.

Yes, I just wrote that Disney is making way too many new Star Wars series, but this one is one of the best, if not THE best to me, because it's so familiar and absolutely rooted in the Star Wars universe.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 - 7:52 pm:

This is the scene that the whole series has been leading up to-- the lightsaber/Force fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader.
If you're determined not to watch this series, then maybe you'll still want to see this terrific fight scene.
If you're still intending to watch the series, then continue at your own risk--SPOILERS.
