Wasn't there a T.V. show about Ewoks in the early 80's? Can anyone else recall this? I wonder if was a canon show.

By Chris Thomas on Saturday, June 26, 1999 - 12:39 am:

Wasn't there also a cartoon starring R2-D2 and C-3PO?

By Adam on Saturday, June 26, 1999 - 1:40 am:

There were two movies and one show about the Ewoks.
The cartoon with C3PO and R2 was called "Droids."

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Saturday, June 26, 1999 - 1:10 pm:

I could be mistaken but the Droids and Ewoks cartoons are not considered canon.

By Chris Thomas on Sunday, June 27, 1999 - 12:38 am:

Apparently it was called Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO, according to The 80s Cartoon Web Ring from Alf to Zelda at http://angelfire.com/me2/80sChild/main.html

By Adam on Sunday, June 27, 1999 - 5:50 pm:

That was the working title. The name was cut to just "Droids" by the time it hit the air.
My guess on canon/non is that they are. Why?
A) Lucas was the Exec Pro of both series.
B) Droids takes place between episode III and ANH, Bobba Fett even showed up once IIRC. Considering Lucas was so involved in Shadows of the Empire and calls is canon because it takes place between ESB and RotJ I think its safe to say "Droids" is for all the same reasons.
C) The Ewok cartoon and TV movies I'm going with also because, again, Lucas was so involved with them. They also don't disrupt the over all story due to how "out of the way" they are. That is to say calling them canon in no way disrupts the over all story. George just liked those little guys, thats all there is to it.
Finally we have to call the Christmas Special canon because
A) All the original actors were in it.
B) Lucas wrote it.
C) It took place between stories
D) Calling it canon guarentees it will never be forgotten thus reminding Lucas what happens when you write a screenplay after drinking to much eggnogg (Jefferson Starship singing flashes in front of his eyes.)
E) Noboby should take themselves too seriously.
Good luck in your quest to "hunt down and destroy every bootlegged copy of that thing ever made" George, you're going to need it.

It was the Holiday Special, not the Christmas Special. The holiday in question was Thanksgiving.

By Adam on Sunday, June 27, 1999 - 8:45 pm:

Yeah thats right, my bad. Actually it was horrible is what it was.

By Chris Thomas on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 3:37 am:

Was the Holiday Special the one with all the Wookiees in it?

By Adam on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 1:00 pm:

Yup.

Well, now that this is out on DVD, I've checked it out, (from the library- Droids I bought, because, hey- it has Anthony Daniels! But Ewoks, I don't know about...) and I must say it's a pleasant surprise (at least, based on the "Holiday Special" scale). It's still kind of goofy, and seems to focus on magic far more than anything else, but it's not nearly as terrible as it could have been. Wicket's voice starts out terribly irritating, but it's fairly easy to get used to.

It's interesting that we see no mention of the Gorax from the Ewok Adventure (by the way, I'll take these cartoons over the "let's rescue your family and slaughter them brutaly in the sequel" live actions movies) or Teek from "Battle for Endor," but we do see the 'firefolk' seen in Ewok adventure. Additionally, we see the Phlogs (natural enemies of the Gorax?), the Duloks (who we've never heard from again- maybe the Empire killed them off?) and the Yuzzums, which are inexplicably blue.

One nit I have to wonder about: the demise of Morag the witch. I would think that someone taking lava form mystically through the use of the renowned "Sunstar Shadow Stone" would be powerful enough to overcome a simple geyser of cold water...

We see Teebo, Paploo, Logray, etc. in the live action incarnations, but what about Kneesa, Malani, Aunt Whats-her-name, and the girl with the crush on Teebo? Obviously, this isn't really a nit, they could have been elsewhere... but it reminds me- do we even see more than 1 or 2 Ewok women in ROTJ?

(I'm sure Wicket and Malani are destined to go the way of Anakin and Tahiri, Jaina and Zekk, Jacen and Tenel Ka, and all of the other young romances that SW cannon sees fit to trounce anyway, so it's probably not all that important, but still...)

I still have a few episodes left to go... I'll post any reviews after I finish those.

By Zarm Rkeeg on Friday, July 15, 2005 - 2:58 pm:

Now that I've finished it, not much to add. I liked the Battle Wagon and Red Ghost stories, and the Morag sections were okay. At first, I thought the 'Get the cure' story featured a cartoon-version Teek, but I was wrong.

And I'm sure I'm going to be stuck saying "Goompa, everybody!" and "Dengar, Ewoks!" for weeks to come...

(What battle cry would they use if the bounty hunter Dengar ever DID come to Endor?)
