010503 - Cybersoaps Archives Discussion

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: L.I.C.C.: Zen Forward (The Kitchen Sink): 010503 - Cybersoaps Archives Discussion
By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Thursday, May 03, 2001 - 5:51 am:

Rather than taking up room on the LICC boards, here is where discussions of the Cybersoap Archives can be held.

By Padawan on Thursday, May 03, 2001 - 11:26 am:

Well, I'd like to point out that JD has more Phantom Returns stuff than Webber put up on the site (last I checked).

By Brian Webber, Site Designer on Thursday, May 03, 2001 - 4:12 pm:

I was hoping he did! I'll e-mail him the password so he can upload the stuff! That is so cool! Thanks Paddy.

By BF on Thursday, May 03, 2001 - 9:17 pm:

I'm going to change the coloring of the episode titles for Jack Mightee: Grey on Brown is kinda ugly.

I was going to make a pic of Jack Mightee for the page, but I can't find a head to use that looks anything like him.

HOWEVER......I'm writing a backstory for the page, and an author's list. The backstory will explain the relationship between Jack Mightee, Vic Hardin, and the Kowalski brothers.

By Brian Webber on Thursday, May 03, 2001 - 11:00 pm:

BF: Great idea. BTW, I was just thinking about changing the colors myself. It's weird how similar we think isn't it?

By Jon Wade on Friday, May 04, 2001 - 6:18 pm:

YOu should mention that Tacoman's first appearence was on JARSO...

By Brian Webber on Friday, May 04, 2001 - 7:47 pm:

jon: I will. It will be for the JARSo Did You Know...

SOW (Speaking of which), dsid you liek the PhantomReturns Did You Know...?

By KAM on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 1:58 am:

The colored backgrounds have GOT to go.

Also why make the black text blue?

The combination of those two things have screwed up the formatting that posters did in color.

What is wrong with a white background & text that is the color it is meant to be?

A section for fan fiction? Eep! And it goes up to R-rated? Eeeeeek!
Why do I have the awful feeling that there will be a number of stories that begin Pattie was sunbathing on a secluded beach...

So will there be a section for art as well?

The front page takes forever to load.

FYI. Another NitCentral 'cybersoap' is The Puppet Ruling Council in the Angel sink. (Don't know what will happen to it when Mark steps down as moderator.)

As for the FAQ about Cybersoaps around the web. There are a couple at the Keenspot Forums. Don't know the exact addresses, but they can be reached through http://www.keenspot.com
I believe one is called Rooms & Mutants and another is The Order of St. Juval. Both were inspired by Keenspot comics (College Roomies From Hell!!! & Clan Of The Cats).

By Brian Webber on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 2:29 am:

Dropped the R rating, sorry about JARSO but Homestead Site Builder doesn't leave me with many options. Once it's up, I'd have to take it down to fix it. As for load time, I can do one or two things to fix that, but I can make no promises at this juncture. The Puppet Ruling Council you say? As I've never been to Angel (if I don't watch buffy why watch Angel?), does it have it's own logo and/or website? And as for Keenspot, I was telling the truth when i said I'd never heard of anything like what we do before. But I'm not the only one answering the FAQ. I'm sure jake can ahdnle that. As for art, I'm iffy on that. I'm thinking a GIFs only rule, but if no one agrees to it, that would cause problems.

By KAM on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 3:38 am:

Don't know about the logo of the PRC, but Mark Morgan does have his own website, Voices Of Unreason. I don't know if he has any plans to move the PRC over there or not. I would guess not since his site uses Conversant, not Discus. Since you post at VOU you might want to talk to him.

I brought up the Keenspot stuff simply as additional information. You said you didn't know of any so I felt I should let you know of some.

I was somewhat tongue-in-cheek on my fan fiction comments.

By Padawan on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 4:37 am:

KAM, Webber know abaout Voices of Unreason, in fact he's a regular there!

By BF on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 6:47 am:

Ummmmm.....if we only put up GIF files, someone is going to have to convert pics for me, I think. I believe my art programs can only do jpgs and bmps. I usually start out with a bmp in one program, work on it a little, switch it to the other program, do a little more work, then convert it to jpg format.

By Brian Webber, Site Designer on Sunday, May 06, 2001 - 3:55 pm:

VuePrint can convert anything into anything (image wise I mean. I can convert MP3s in GIFs).

As for PRC, I'll talk to Mark.

Thanks for all the pointers.

By KAM on Monday, May 07, 2001 - 5:20 am:

BF, I know in Photoshop the Image Mode can be changed (i.e. Greyscale, RGB, CMYK, Indexed Color, etc.). Check your art program for such a thing. If it does allow you to change modes set to Indexed Color (or something similar) and try Save As... a GIF file.

As I understand it GIFs can only show the basic 256 colors that most computers recognize. So if it's not called Indexed Color, it might have a name with a similar meaning. (Also you might lose some specialised colors.)

Padawan, I knew that. Reread the last sentance of the first paragraph of my previous post.

By Brian Webber, Site Designer on Thursday, May 10, 2001 - 2:35 am:

1: I need "Did You Know..."s for Prot Mike, Jack Mightee and TKOS.

2: How about we have the Nittys at the new site?

3: When you submit stuff for the Art Gallery, please try to keep it under 9000 bytes.

4: I made some room for some more links on the left side. But I can't think of any. Help!

Thanks

By Brian Webber on Friday, May 11, 2001 - 6:52 pm:

Took Padawan's suggestion and added a What's New for the Site.

By KAM on Sunday, May 13, 2001 - 12:56 am:

Did You Know that Visitor #25 first appeared in Port Mike? KAM needed a generic name for various comments and when visiting Matthew Patterson's Sailor Moon site the counter said "You are Visitor #25".

By Padawan on Sunday, May 13, 2001 - 3:31 am:

It's funny, I didn't assosiate Visitor #25 with you , KAM, I thought of it as a sort of "25th post" or "unnamed 25th member" thing. Possibly I also confused him with "The Twelfth Man" from the Movies board who was belived to be either Nyla or Ccabe.

IIRC I thought he was either you or JD before you confessed.

By Brian Webber on Sunday, May 13, 2001 - 1:31 pm:

KAM: I'll add that today if I edit the site today. I might not since there's really nothing I could do for the moment.

By Padawan Observer on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 1:02 pm:

I just saw that other cybersoap thing and was rather amused...

No, Ansh's sister is not named after Tammy from MTVille. if I knew about that then she'd have been given a different name.

*sigh*

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 1:50 pm:

I still need a Did You Know for Port Mike and Bizarro World. Also, my middle two suggestions in the last post were never addressed.

2: How about we have the Nittys at the new site?

3: When you submit stuff for the Art Gallery, please try to keep it under 9000 bytes.

All I need for #3 is someone to say if they agree or not.

By BF on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 3:47 pm:

I can live with those suggestions.

But, I still think the Nittys should be exclusive to LICC. We could do a separate awards for the other Cybersoaps. Call them the Soapys, or something.

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 4:34 pm:

BF: Well, you'd be wrong about the Nittys, because JARSO and Phantom Returns have all gotten Nittys before (JARSO got two in it's last chapter). You just don't want Arhcangel to get any you jerk! *reacts to strnage looks* Well, he doesn't! He said so once!

Oh bTW, added the Did You Know that KAM gave me to port Mike, which is now working link wise. Added links to the TKOS page as well.

By 2001 Nitty Judge on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 5:02 pm:

The Nitty Award voting process will begin tomorrow. It is limited to LICC. More details then.

By Pyssed Off. on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 - 5:25 pm:

Judge: LIAR! I've seen the awards given to Phantom Returns and JARSO! You are a liar! LIAR! I don't think you're even a real judge! You're BF trying to exlcude Archangel. Yeah, you SAY it's limited to LICC, but I wouldn't be surpised to see Sprinkle Boy and TKOS pick up at leasta nomination or two.

By Padawan on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 12:11 am:

Brian, I don't believe so. I put my faith in this person, and I know when he says it's limited to LICC then it will be.

JARSO's awards were in a different set, and were unofficial (no-one voted, they were just given by KAM)

Phantom Returns only got awards because LICC originally was part of it.

By Brian Webber on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 1:19 am:

Paddy: Well even so, the word Nitty implies that it applies to NITCentral in general. If it was JUST for the LICC, it should be called something else, like the Lickys (LICCees) or something.

By KAM Nitty Creator & usual passer-outer on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 1:38 am:

Actually Padawan, one person voted for the JARSO Nittys.

Also I gave a Nitty to Margie for Trekspotting on one of the Jokes & Groaners board.

Then I decided to give out Nittys in honor of LICC's first anniversary (from their founding on the Phantom Returns boards). Only LICC-related Phantom Returns was part of that.

This year I was asked by JD if I would allow them (JD & ?) to give out Nittys for LICC and I agreed.

As far as I know the voting is only for LICC entries.

By KAM on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 1:43 am:

Basically the Nittys are specific to whoever I think deserves them (in the case of Margie) or a board I liked (JARSO & LICC).

Yes, the name did come from NitCentral.

By KAM on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 1:45 am:

9000 bytes equals how many K?

By Brian Webber on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 1:46 am:

Uh, well, it's about, oh I'd say, um, well. Ah ••••, I don't know.

By BF on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 2:18 am:

The 2001 Nitty Judge was not me!

And I didn't exactly say that I didn't want Archangel to win any Nittys. I said I didn't think it should be included in the Nittys, but in another awards, along with all the other, non-LICC soaps.

(With only four people posting, and the gaps in between posts, I don't think Jack Mightee is going to win any, or even be nominated for any!)

By Brian Webber on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 2:29 am:

Well it's incredibly unfair, and as such I shall go out and enlist some celebrity aid. That's right, I'm going to e-mail Michael moore (Roger & Me, The Awful Truth) and Kevin Smith (Dogma, Clerks)! And if that fails, I'm sure Gloria Alred is press-hungry enough.

By Padawan on Wednesday, May 16, 2001 - 2:46 pm:

KAM - 9k. k=1000 (cf Y2K) therefore 9000 bytes equals 9k. QED.

By KAM on Thursday, May 17, 2001 - 1:18 am:

Is there a time limit about how far back the nomination can come from? I'm sure some people still think the Superhero Convention was the best, but it was voted on last year.

Brian, 9k is pretty small. Only my first Hamburger Pattie pic fits. The first Tacoman pic was 21k. (Although I suppose I could shrink it down, but then it could be hard to see.)

By BF on Thursday, May 17, 2001 - 3:46 am:

I think we should make the limit more reasonable. Say, 30k?

By 2001 Nitty Awards on Thursday, May 17, 2001 - 7:43 am:

Nominations on characters, storylines, etc, are eligible from the last Nitty Awards (July 16, 2000) to now.

By Brian Webber on Thursday, May 17, 2001 - 3:42 pm:

BF: Ok, I'll meet you in the middle. 18k.

By Brian Webber on Thursday, May 17, 2001 - 8:27 pm:

Made some changes to the site. I hope you like them, adn the new POLL.

By Brian Webber on Saturday, May 19, 2001 - 6:14 pm:

Well, I'm getting ready for the next batch of updates (next Saturday), which will include the first 9 chapters of Port Mike! But I'd like to go in with more than that. Like the unwritten intros for port Mike, TKOS, Jack Mightee, etc. Also, you know on the JARSO page there's the thing that say "The Early Tales from the MST3k Kitchen Sink?" I'd like to have those. Seeing the great job Padawan did for that thing on the Sprinkle Boy site, I thought maybe HE could help me. Also, I'm thinking of dropping the Art Gallery general thing, and just adding indivual art galleries to the pages, the way LICC Archangel and Sprinkle Boy have their own. There are a few buttons on Bizarro World already that hint at this. I could add buttons like those to the other pages too.

By Padawan on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 2:27 pm:

Actually, if I had payed attention to KAM's Crystal Quest properly I'd have worked out what characters were all played by the same person (him). Actually what got me suspicious was seeing them all return at pretty much the same time near the end of LICC1.

I was wanting to make a site for TKOS, so don't get too carried away with your one, Brian Webber.

By Brian Webber on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 8:15 pm:

Aw, c'mon! I thought Floyd liked my TKOS page!

BTW, tomorrow I'm following through on my Art Galleries idea.

By BF on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 9:01 pm:

I DO like your TKOS page, but if Padawan wants to do one, too, we can just make the logo on the front page of the Archives a link to his page.

And, DON'T call me Floyd! I HATE being called by my last name. "BF" or "Lord & Master" will be fine. :)

Webber, I don't have time right now to make the changes to the Jack Mightee page that I wanted to. If you get a chance, just reverse the colors of the Episode Title Text and the Text Box.

By Brian Webber on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 9:19 pm:

No prob Floyd. :-)

By ScottN on Monday, May 21, 2001 - 10:45 pm:

Brian, where the TKOS page?

Nit: "the TKOS" is redundant.

By Padawan on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 12:21 am:

No, because it means "the The Knights of Silvercliff page."

By BF on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 8:12 am:

Okay, I went and changed the Jack Mightee page. I recolored what was there, and added an introduction\backstory. Let me know what you think.

I redid everything in brown on white, because I believe that with Jack Mightee, less should be more!

By Padawan on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 11:46 am:

Brian Webber - I don't know what the "Early Tales from the MST3K Kitchen Sink" were. I think it was basically James tracking rachgd around Nitcentral, and then KAM suggested they have a board and Matthew Patterson created one. All the stalking posts are displayed on the first JARSO board, AFAIK.

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 4:07 pm:

Oh. Well, I could delete that then and replace it with something else. Like an Observer Chroniles thing. In fact, I think every Cybersoap (except PRC) should have Observer pages.

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 4:41 pm:

BF: You should've mentioned your changes to Jack Mightee in What's New.

By The Observer on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 4:56 pm:

What will this Observer Chronicles section entail?

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, May 22, 2001 - 5:16 pm:

Well, you know the Observer's record of the LICC right? First appearnces, last known location, etc. as well as summaries off the major storylines in another Observer thing?

By KAM on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 3:36 am:

Padawan - Actually, if I had payed attention to KAM's Crystal Quest properly I'd have worked out what characters were all played by the same person
If you'd read Phantom Returns XI you could have figured out some of them as well.

Well, I'm sharpening up my axe. Did you want the Drama Group cut?

By BF on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 5:28 am:

KAM, if you get a chance, please remove the Mysterious Detectives board. Its not going to happen. At least, not anytime soon.

By Padawan on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 11:51 am:

Yes, KAM, make it so.

I'd be happy to write a Com-style reference guide for JARSO. I've started, in fact.

By Padawan on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 12:01 pm:

If you'd read Phantom Returns XI you could have figured out some of them as well.

I have read Phantom Returns XI, I don't see how that would have shown me who was you.

By Brian Webber on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 12:18 pm:

Padawan: Sweet. I'll give you the neccesary info for uploading the thing later today.

By KAM on Thursday, May 24, 2001 - 5:16 am:

I was rereading it a bit ago & winced at how some of my characters like The Queue & Hamburger Pattie would post so close together, indicating that they had the same author.

By Brian Webber, Site Designer on Monday, June 04, 2001 - 6:00 pm:

Updated the site. First time since a million years ago.

By BF on Monday, June 04, 2001 - 8:52 pm:

I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind! :)

Actually, I've got a problem. Or maybe Homestead & Xara do. I just started my own site (its my Sims stuff), and when I try to select the Xara Modules, I get errors, saying "Try again later". Webber, you ever have that problem when designing the Cybersoaps site?

By the way, I'm going to put up a link to MY site on the Cybersoaps site, eventually. I'm working on LICC stuff to post at the site (if I can convince KAM to let me use his artwork, and if Kira doesn't mind me using the LICC logo!).

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 6:44 am:

I have that sometimes. Typically it does that once every week wether it needs to or not. Keep trying.

Be careful when you put up the link Floyd.

By Reddo on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 11:21 am:

BF - whens your Sims site going to be ready?

By BF on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 11:42 am:

Reddo, my Sims site is already up!

http://simsheadzup.homestead.com

I use the name GhostMachine there. (GhostMachine is my EzBoard name)

Please sign the guestbook if you stop by. :)

By Reddo the Sims fan! on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 11:56 am:

Cheers, I'll have a look

By Padawan on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 12:00 pm:

Cheers

Frasier!

By TheSpectre on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 12:02 pm:

--Cheers--

Where everyone knows your name!

By Reddo on Tuesday, June 05, 2001 - 12:14 pm:

Why did I say that . . . .

Neat site BF, are you going to put objects up there sometime?

By BF on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 2:16 am:

I'm afraid there will be no objects there, Reddo, unless I start taking submissions. I have the T-Mog, but I have no clue how to do what I want with it, even WITH the tutorial! A shame, because I want to make a new tv. The pics would be from "Iron Chef", "Gundam Wing", "Godzilla vs. Destroyah", and a Cincinatti Reds baseball player.

By the way, the site's been updated. I added a few things and moved the Guestbook and Links Book to the front page.

By Reddo on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 12:02 pm:

BF - How did you make the skins? I'd really like to but I don't know how

By BF on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 8:38 pm:

I'll give you a basic idea how, but I'll post in the New Art Gallery board, instead of here. Okay?

I may make a tv after all. I now have a general idea how to do it, but I don't know if it will work with any of the three (crappy) paint programs on my computer. I'm not about to spend $80.00 on Paint Shop Pro, or spend 5 hours or more just to download a demo!

By The Spectre on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 2:00 am:

Hey, Webber, do you get your terminology from coffee?

If you like something, it's "Sweet".
If you don't, it's "Weak".

Just wondering...

By BF on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 2:46 am:

I have a question:

With Homestead starting to charge $10.00 a month for sites that are currently free in a couple of months, or making them pretty much undesirable (I already moved my Sims site to Geocities), what's going to happen to the site? Is someone going to foot the bill, or should we start looking for a new home for the site?

By BF on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 2:48 am:

My site, if anyone cares:

http://geocities.com/simsheadzup

I only have heads available for download right now.

By Brian Webber on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 9:03 am:

Homestead's not gonna be free anymore? ••••! ••••! ••••! I can't believe I'll have to go through moving my personal site AGAIN! ••••! Look, I might (keyword: MIGHT) be willing to pay the 10 a month for my personal site, but not the Cybersoap site. And since I work five days a week, 8 and a half hours a day (sometimes twelve on bad days), someone else'll have to take responsibility for moving the Cybersoap site.

By BF on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 2:46 pm:

Anyone who has a Homestead Personal site already has until the middle or end of August, I believe, before they have to start paying. If you don't pay, you can still have a free site, but:

You only get 8mb instead of 16.
You're limited to 3 pages only.
You can't use the offline site builder.

I said "screw it" and moved immediately to Geocities. One advantage Geocities has? Its site builder loads about three times faster than Homestead's.

Anyone who gets a Homestead Personal site now has about a month before they have to start paying.

Not everyone got notices. My site had not been up for even a week when I found out about this! Someone posted a copy of the letter they were sent on a message board, and apparently Homestead still hasn't notified a lot of us.

By Brian Webber on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 5:06 pm:

BF: I know. It really sucks. And it was a pain in the ass moving from FortuneCity to Homestead in the first place!

By Electron on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 7:39 pm:

There are some indications that some parts of NBCi (including the free webspace) will be shut down too in the near future. And they recommend moving to Homestead!

By BF on Saturday, June 23, 2001 - 9:52 pm:

Homestead?! NBCi and Homestead must have worked out a deal of some kind!

Its true, Electron. Someone with a Sims site posted on a message board that she had been advised by NBCi to find a new home for her site.

Move to Geocities. The site builder loads faster, and you can upload 5 files at a time. However, you can't use Xara, and I recommend signing up for Bravenet and using their Guestbook instead of the one Geocities provides. I just went and changed the URL of my site in my Bravenet member profile, then posted the HTML for my Guestbook and Links Book in at the Geocities site. That way I kept both without having to start over. I looked at the guestbook Geocities provided, and it has one major problem: The exterior print is so small that its easily overlooked.

Forgot to mention, not that it matters, but if you do pay Homestead, you'll get 25mb instead of 16.

The people at Homestead said that they were going to charge for Homestead Personal because of the response they got for Homestead Professional. The people at Homestead are shooting themselves in the foot, because a lot of people with Homestead Personal are kids or teenagers who can't afford to pay, and those who can afford to pay are already abandoning ship (like me), or planning to.

What they haven't considered is that Homestead Professional is for businesses. The people who pay for it can afford to, because they're making more than enough money from the site to pay for the d@mn thing! :(

By Matt Pesti on Monday, June 25, 2001 - 9:47 am:

Parts of my (down) website are on the Juno/ Homestead alliance (AKA the parts that can't be on my College server website, or the parts like webpolls, Pestichat, and the like.) If Pestichat closes, my advice is to use IM. I have not recieved a notice on the issue, perhaps bcause of Juno affilation.

By JD on Monday, June 25, 2001 - 10:31 pm:

Well, Matt, I have to say Pestichat is one of the best things I've found for story discussion and plain conversation about LICC, and even if we have to fall back on ICQ or something, we still owe ya a big THANK-YOU!

By JD on Monday, June 25, 2001 - 10:32 pm:

BTW, Webster, I uploaded all of Phantom Returns to your site.

By BF on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 - 12:34 am:

Webster?! Hmmmmm.....I hearby declare JD to be....Mr. Belvedere! Mmmmmmwwwwwwaaaaaaaa!

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 - 7:17 am:

JD: Cool.

Anyhoo, I've been thinking. We CAN do the 10 dollar a month thing easy. I'll front half of it (5 a month), and you guys can help me match the other half. JD and BF can each send me a check for $2.50 (two dollars and fifty cents every month, preferrably a the next-to-last week of the month) and voila! The site stays as is!

By BF on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 - 3:56 pm:

?! If I'm not willing to pay $10.00 a month for my own site, what makes you think I'm going to chip in $2.50 for the Cybersoap site?!

Move it to Geocities! You'll have to find something to replace the Xara stuff, but that's about it. And Geocities' site builder runs faster, too! :)

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 - 7:26 pm:

I'll think of something. I always do.

By Freedom Fighter! on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 1:04 am:

Well, boys and goils, we're faced with the very real possibility, that becuase we mentioned where the Cybersoaps came from, NitCentral, we apparently have violated a copyright, and we may be asked to shut the site down. However, we can get back at the person responsible for this. Each Cybersoap just gets it's own site. (BF, the images made through Xara CAN be saved as GIFs. Remember that!) But DON'T mention Nitcentral by name. Just have a link that goes like this; "THIS is where this Cybersoap can be played. E-mail me (or us) if you have trouble finding it." Having a LINK to a WEBSITE is not a crime by any stretch of the imagination, and since we don't mention this place by name (you can use the initials NC if youw hcih, since there are hudreds of thigns with those initials), so by doing that, we're essentially cutting off the jerk who's trying to shut us down! And there's not a dam thing he can do about it! Because it's perfectly legal! HA HA HA HA!

I love you John Grisham

By KAM on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 1:45 am:

Did you get a Cease & Desist from a California lawyer about this?

(I know some artists who did fanart who have recieved these things.)

By BF on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 4:11 am:

I really don't give a rat's behind about having a site for Jack Mightee right now; if it doesn't get more authors soon (it only has four, and we post intermitently), Episode #1 may very well be the ONLY episode! *

Now, TKOS is another matter entirely. It has to have a site! Maybe I'll get another Geocities site and make it into a TKOS site, with the help of the other authors, of course. (At least the ones who have revealed their true identities....)

* If Jack Mightee ends after one episode, LICC is going to find him frozen in ice, ala Captain America, at some point! :) (Heck, I may just do that anyway. I have a good idea what to do with him in LICC..... Mmmmmuuuwwwwwwhhhhhaaaa!!! ;) )

By KAM on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 5:13 am:

Rereading that post I'm wondering what the actual problem is?

At first I thought it might be that someone read Phantom Returns or JARSO & got upset about the unauthorized use of their characters.

Now I'm wondering if it's using the Nitcentral name without Phil's permission?

Could you be a little clearer about the problem?

By ScottN on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 1:55 pm:

Anyone know if the LICC got a nastygram, since they have a page about the legality of the league?

By Brian Webber on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 2:40 pm:

I got an e-mail from Phil. He poltiely told me that I was violating copyrights by statitng that our cybersoaps are from nitCentral.

My guess; he e-mailed me since I'm listed as the site's designer. I wonder if Kira got an e-mail too.

By KAM on Monday, July 16, 2001 - 3:13 am:

In retrospect it makes sense. Phil coined the term NitCentral. It's his web address. He's invested a lot of money in it. Etc., etc.

I can see where he might see a site that he has nothing to do with, that uses the name Nitcentral as a threat to his Trademark. Remember, Trademark law states that a Trademark holder must diligently protect his Trademark or lose it.

A number of things I can see as being problematic. The page is called Nitcentral Cybersoaps, which implies an ownership, but Phil wasn't asked if the name could be used, etc.

Also since Trademarked characters do appear in the soaps he could be worried that any potential lawsuits might involve him.

Could you post the email here?

ScottN, the Legality of the League thing came about because I commented to Kira about the legal issues. (I think on one of the early LICC2 Discussion boards.)

By MarkN on Monday, July 16, 2001 - 4:40 am:

Ok, I'm a bit confused. What's all this about copyright infringement? Is "Cybersoap" copyrighted by someone else on another site somewhere or what? This board was the first time that I remember seeing that word. How can our using it here on Phil's site be considered as infringement if you saw NC's cybersoaps are on NC? What brought about infringement charges and why remove this board if so ordered, and whatever else you can tell me? Please forgive my ignorance. This is my first time on this particular board, so I'll need some clarification about this whole thing.

And what are the Nittys? Obviously a take on award show names but awards for what, exactly?

By KAM on Monday, July 16, 2001 - 5:20 am:

Whatever I felt like. ;-)

The Nittys are an award that I first used on James & rachgd's Soap Opera (JARSO), then I gave one to margie for spotting a reference you missed on one of the Jokes & Groaners board, then I gave them out for the first anniversary of the League of Intergalactic Cosmic Champions (LICC). This year the people behind the LICC Archive asked if they could give them out.

I don't think the problem is the word Cybersoap. I think the problem was using the name Nitcentral without getting the Chief's permission.

By BF on Monday, July 16, 2001 - 6:15 am:

MarkN, go here and take a look. It'll be of interest to you, because it includes TKOS!:

http://nccybersoaps.homestead.com/index.html

That is what all this legal talk is about.

By MarkN on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 4:50 am:

Thanks, BF. The legal notice sure was rather anticlimatic. I thought there'd be more to it than there was. Well, I hope things can be worked out with Phil over it.

I just emailed Phil about changing my mind on doing the mod job for "Murder in Small Town X" and would only like "Night Visions", since I'd be new to it and figure I could handle only one board for now til I've had more experience.

By Brian Webber on Saturday, July 21, 2001 - 3:18 pm:

Well, Phil and I worked out a deal. He had NO, I repeat NO trouble with the individual sites for the Cybersaops, so we'll be doing that. Or rather y'all will, cause The Archangel Trilogy site is already up and running.

Go here to see the short version.

But in the end, this will work out for the best, becuase now every site will be more like what the creators if the Cybersoaps want. I noticed the reaction to the Bizarro and JARSO sites I built were lukewarm at best, so no outside designers are out of the equation.

Good luck.

By BF on Saturday, July 21, 2001 - 5:46 pm:

Link's busted.

I saved the Jack Mightee banner to my hard drive. I don't know if I still have it or not, but I'll use it if I decide to do a site, which won't be for awhile.

By BW on Saturday, July 21, 2001 - 9:13 pm:

Oops. It should be http://nccybersoaps.homestead.com

By BF on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 2:19 am:

Yeah, I know.

The FAQ button\picture isn't showing up (red x, anyone?), and the Nitcentral button at the top of the screen isn't a link. Shouldn't it be, since you're using the link graphics?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 4:13 am:

No, I didn't get any complaints from the Chief. I just thought it would be a good idea to change the names to avoid future problems.

By Brian Webber on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 12:14 pm:

BF: Yes, it is a link. It's been a link since the first time I put it up, and I all I did was move it.

By BF on Sunday, July 22, 2001 - 4:53 pm:

What was the link to that site with all the web comics on it that was at the site before it was changed? I meant to bookmark it, but never got around to it. :(

By KAM on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 2:03 am:

Do you mean Keenspot?
http://www.keenspot.com

It also has a companion site Keenspace.
http://www.keenspace.com

(Keenspace is kind of like the minor leagues. It has over a 100 online comics, some of which update infrequently or have been discontinued, while Keenspot has 30 or 40 that 'made the cut'.)

By BF on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 7:11 am:

Yep. Thanx. :)

By Padawan Observer on Saturday, July 28, 2001 - 12:15 pm:

We're thinking of wrapping up Sprinkle Boy with a big finale storyline. Read the SB discussion board for more info.

JD and the Brians, do you accept this arrangement and wish to take part?

By Brian Webber on Saturday, July 28, 2001 - 5:06 pm:

Paddy: I think Stormsaje'll sit out on this one. At least for now anyway. That may change as the story goes along.

By Reddo on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 2:39 am:

I think what Paddy's meaning, Brian, is stopping the thing completely.

By Padawan Observer on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 2:41 am:

Yes, but there may be a sequel sometime.

Reddo, come to Pestichat!

By Brian Webber on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 10:38 am:

Reddo: I know. But I figure at some point the heroes and villians will end up back in Manhatan, during the CURRENT storyline, and when/if that happens, Stormsaje will be worked in. But I'll probably kill him off since I'm not enjoying this superhero thing as much as I'd hoped.

By Reddo on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 4:07 pm:

So do you mind if the board is stopped then?

By Brian Webber on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 6:49 pm:

Reddo: Not really. I mean I work almost 45 hours a week, and only get weekends off anyway. I use what little time I have between getting home from work, and going to bed for the next day (only about two hours) for LICC and Archangel.

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 - 9:59 am:

You could have just called it Nitpicker's Cybersoaps. That would be accurate as this is the Nitpicker's guild, and Nitpicker is not copywritten, to my knowlege anyways.

By Reddo on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 1:48 pm:

Okay, I think there's a bit of a problem going on . . . .

It seems to me that all cybersoaps at the kitchen sink are falling apart. Jack Mightee, Sprinkle Boy and even TKOS look like doom is drawing closer. Now if these boards stop getting the little regular posts that they are currently getting, then they'll fall apart and in the end probably be deleted . . . so instead of us all just watching this happen, why can't we all be be a bit more loyal to these boards? Isn't that better than just posting at one-or-two larger boards?

By Padawan Observer on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 1:52 pm:

Reddo -

I am not currently involved in LICC, and I am ready to begin the finale storyline at Sprinkle Boy. I suggest you join in with the smaller "cybersoaps", since you are so concerned about their fate. (Although in TKOS they're currently in no position for anyone new to arrive - on a boat going through rapids!) I do intend to continue posting, but I don't want to do it on my own.

By Reddo on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 2:09 pm:

Floyd, do you have anything to say about Jack Mightee?

And Paddy, I will continue posting at S.B. once some-one else posts

By BF on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 12:53 am:

Reddo, all I have to say about Jack Mightee is this:

I'm working on some ideas of how to wrap it up. Hopefully by Monday. That's why I haven't posted in Jack Mightee lately. No Episode #2 will be forthcoming, as only four people have been participating in Jack Mightee, and I have too many things planned that will be taking up my time. Namely working on my Sims site, which I just redesigned the first page of, and another project.
I'm waiting a bit before I post anything in TKOS; I want to see what happens before I have any of my characters say anything. I am reading TKOS and S.B., just not posting.
As for S.B., I'm game for anything you decide. If S.B. goes on, or later starts back up, I'm probably going to get stop posting as Pickled Fish Man, though. Maybe I'll bring in Whattaguy, who's only been mentioned briefly, instead.
Of course, we could have Sprinkle Boy and crew find Jack and Dan frozen in ice, or something....

By BF on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 1:07 am:

By the way, I will be reading TKOS and S.B., just not posting; if anyone wants to take over writing Pickled Fish Man for a while, that's fine with me.
I really need to work on some more Sims skins and heads, as its been over a month since I've updated my site, and I need to play Jedi Knight some more. I'm due for at least two promotions in my Jedi Knight clan, and I haven't played the game online in over three weeks!

Oh, if you haven't read LICC lately, Rocket Ranger left on the ThunderCrane and took Wayne and Kent with him. I'm going to start a separate Rocket Ranger board at some point; the war between the remnants of the Whyte Kastle empire, lead by RR, against the Dull-Ards (my version of the Daleks from Dr. Who). It's going to be a while before it starts, and aside from the hamburger jokes and Darth Tantruum, its going to be mostly serious.

By Reddo on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 2:01 am:

BF - If you are planning to wrap up Jack Migtee then I have two things to say . . . .

One: If you are wanting more posters then Im happy to join in, I just haven't had the time yet nor any good character ideas.

Two: If you don't want any new posters and just want it over with then maybe we could link S.B. and J.M. together for the final board?

By BF on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 4:23 am:

Jack Mightee takes place in the late 1940's, and its a non-superpowered world, at least so far. Throwing superheroes into it right now would be a BIG mistake.

I'll probably do Jack Mightee Episode #2 after the Rocket Ranger project is finished.

By Reddo on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 2:34 pm:

I was sortof meaning the frozen idea BF

By Reddo on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 11:31 am:

Can I just cheak that it has been agreed that Sprinkle Boy is about to end?

I'm wondering what to do with the website you see

By JD on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 2:08 pm:

Reddo, I haven't said this yet, and I should've, but you've done a TERRIFIC job with the website. The movies, cartoons, everything! Could you perhaps make an opening movie for the LICC site, maybe featuring Kira's logo?

By Reddo on Saturday, August 11, 2001 - 2:53 am:

JD - Thanks a lot :), yeah I'll try making some ideas up for the LICC site, if you want to give me some ideas that you think are good then I'll put them together and show you (some-how) what I've come up with .

All - as S.B. is being stopped here I might as well continue with the cartoons, movies ect. if Paddy or some-one else can come up with a bye-bye note for the site then that's great, hope to hear from you soon.

By Reddo on Saturday, August 11, 2001 - 1:33 pm:

JD - have a look at the movies page at albyd, I've put an idea for the LICC intro thing there.

GeoCities is Dead. Can some kind soul archive (and possibly re-host) the LICC Web Site?

By Josh M on Thursday, April 23, 2009 - 8:34 pm:

How much does that usually cost?

By KAM on Friday, April 24, 2009 - 2:04 am:

ScottN - GeoCities is Dead.
Not yet, it's more like it's on Death Row. Pick, pick, pick. ;-)

Josh M - How much does that usually cost?
Depends on the host you can find. Been two years since I've looked, so I'm not sure what's still out there.

By KAM on Saturday, July 11, 2009 - 6:45 am:

Apparently to 'move' a Geocities site to Yahoo's new site will cost about $60 a year.

Geocities goes bye-bye in October.

By ScottN on Saturday, July 11, 2009 - 6:39 pm:

Does anyone here own a domain? How big is/are the LICC archives?

By JD on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 12:04 pm:

Not terribly big, less than a hundred megs, I'd say.

By ScottN on Friday, October 29, 2010 - 2:42 pm:

Geocities is available as a 900GB torrent

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101029/03055711647/archive-of-geocities-released-as-a-1tb-torrent.shtml

I guess we could extract the site from there...

But who wants to use up that much bandwidth?

By ScottN on Saturday, December 18, 2010 - 1:05 am:

Purely by random chance, I happened to find a mirror!

http://www.oocities.com/theLICC/

By Padawan Observer on Sunday, December 19, 2010 - 3:45 pm:

That's not a mirror. A mirror would be a K.I.L.L. (King's Interstellar Lethal Legionnaries) website.

By Crocodile Dundee on Sunday, December 19, 2010 - 4:25 pm:

That's not a mirror, mate.

[pulls a 10 foot, highly polished mirror from a bag of holding]

Now, that's a mirror!

By Padawan Observer on Saturday, January 22, 2011 - 2:14 pm:

Mark Morgan? Isn't he the guy who used to play the Observer? Or am I thinking of Keiran Morgan?

By Mark Morgan (Mmorgan) on Saturday, January 22, 2011 - 2:50 pm:

You're thinking of Keiran; far as I recall was only in LICC for about three posts when I realized I was terrible at it.

By Padawan Observer on Sunday, January 23, 2011 - 1:54 pm:

Yes, I am. :-) There was a joke a while ago that you were the Observer, based partly on the Observer's *real* author having a fondness for the name Morgan. Later, the Observer character, adopting a human name, called himself Keiran Morgan.

(Not to be confused with Keith Alan Morgan, author of Rocket Ranger. I mean, Robot Redshirt.)
