This is a frequently derided program, but it works as a product of its era. It's hard to remember a time when it just wasn't easy to see a movie--there was no television or VHS or DVD. You had to rely on a reissuing. Thus, there's sort of a thrill to have a mini-version of a movie you particularly like pop up on radio. For modern audiences, it also allows for a different interpretation of a film script (in this case, with a hour to work with, the annoying truncation that happens elsewhere wasn't as big a problem)--and sometimes a different cast. The odd usage of an audience (even for the dramas) adds to the entertainingly large feel of the program. The show is at its weakest probably when it uses very good and well remembered films. Lesser known films, especially comedies, come off best.
