Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Sci-fi Novels: Comments & Suggestions
Hi, Butch Brookshier, your moderator here. The title pretty much explains itself. If you need to contact me privately, send an e-mail to blarp55 at yahoo dot com

Why doesn't anyone ever comment on the books, except for Douglas Adams?

By Rodnberry on Sunday, January 24, 1999 - 5:12 am:

Well, I've hardly read any of Asimov's books and want to get into them more later on. Specifically all the Foundation ones, of which there are about, what, a thousand now? First, I'm reading some Heinleins. I'm also into Stephen King but haven't read him lately. Usually when I get a new King book I'll read it first, even if I'm reading other books (sometimes I read more than one at a time). Anyway, I just started "Stranger In a Strange Land" today. Is anyone into Heinlein? How do you like his books?

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, January 25, 1999 - 7:05 am:

I generally find that older the story, the more I like it. By the 50's, Heinlein was so full of himself it leaked into his characters. Then the 60's and the New Wave came along. Heinlein thought he had to keep up with the times, so he put really silly sex scenes in his novels. Bad idea.

If you are reading SIASL, I suggest you get the uncut version. After my complaint about Heinlein and sex, it may come as a surprise to hear that I thought the sex scenes here worked. I guess it's because they were important to the plot.

Why don't you try the novels of Frederik Pohl? You can't go wrong with "Gateway" or "Man Plus."

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Friday, April 02, 1999 - 11:19 am:

Just thought I'd remind anyone that you can put any suggestions for board topics, additions etc. here.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Sunday, May 16, 1999 - 9:42 am:

I've archived some topics in the Sink, due to general lack of interest in them. You can find them in the Archive section of the sink. Oh yeah, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a bit SF writing- taking part in a multi-author story. See Write Your Own Novel section for ideas.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Thursday, July 22, 1999 - 1:29 pm:

I've added Stephen Baxter and Greg Bear sections. If I've missed anything of their books, post here.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Saturday, June 03, 2000 - 4:52 am:

I've added a few authors. The novels section is now a 'public board' (i.e. there's a Create A Conversation Button). So, if you have any personal favourites (ahem ;-) ) that you want to add, feel free.

By Bajoran on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 - 11:41 pm:

How about a link for the new Douglas Adams book the " Salmon of Doubt".

thanks

By Denise on Wednesday, June 05, 2002 - 12:55 pm:

Please include a message board for "The End of Eternity," Asimov's incredible time travel story and probably the best time travel story of all time. Please, please, please!

By Todd Pence on Wednesday, June 05, 2002 - 4:53 pm:

Hey, Denise. You can create your own board for this story by going to "The Reader's Sink" on this board and hitting the Create New Conversation button.

By Butch the Moderator on Monday, July 15, 2002 - 7:02 pm:

Bajoran and Denise, I've added the novels you asked for.

Hi Butch (or any other moderator). I think there's a problem with some of the boards here.

When I post to the board entitled:
Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Sci-fi Novels: The Novels: Other Novels: CoDominium/Empire Novels (Jerry Pournelle)

I get an error message on the preview screen saying:
Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: * 1798/4157 not in tree file! *New Message

My message gets posted, but doesn't appear on the 'Last Day' list, and I can't navigate to that page by going down the Topics tree.

Here's a direct link:
http://64.33.77.146/discus/messages/1798/4157.html?FridayMay2119990540pm

The problem seems to start at the:
Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Sci-fi Novels
board where the is no topic called "The Novels". There appears to be a whole load of topics there that I can't reach from the topics tree, but can reach through a keyword search.

Thankyou.

Sophie, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I haven't been able to fix it. It may need Phil's intervention. I'm going to ask the other Mods for help first though.
If you or anyone else knows of anymore of these "Lost Boards", please let me know. I've only discovered one other on my own and it had no messages in it. I may have to create new versions of these boards and copy the old posts over to them.

By KAM on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 4:22 am:

So why are the topics in The Dusty Attic closed to posting?

I was going to put some thoughts down in Doc Savage.

BTW maybe you can talk to JD over in L.I.C.C. about moving Create Your Own Superhero over there. Seems appropriate with LICC. Or if he doesn't want it you could always move it to Comic Books which is also appropriate (& I am the mod there.)

By Butch the Mod on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 6:28 pm:

They're closed because no one had posted anything on them in some time. I'll move Doc Savage back to the active section. The "Create Your Own Superhero" topic hadn't had a post in 2&1/2 years when I took over this board, so I didn't see any point in keeping it open. However, since you're the comics mod, I'll glady move it over there. Maybe it'll spark somebody's interest there. Good luck with it. :)

By Butch the Mod on Thursday, March 11, 2004 - 6:37 pm:

Done and done.
Doc Savage is in the "Sci-Fi Authors and their novels" and "Create Your Your Own Superhero" is in the Comics Gutter.

By KAM on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 4:58 am:

But if you close them then it eliminates the possibility of impulse-posting.

Someone might have a comment to make, but then they have to leave a message for the Moderator, the Moderator has to see the message, then the Moderator has to go 'backstage' & reactivate posting, by that time the poster has most likely logged off & who knows when or if they'll be back?

Also some people might want to make a post, see that they have to request it be opened & just decide that it's not worth the trouble. (I almost didn't make that request.)

If the boards are open there is always the possibility that someone might post a comment which sparks a discussion, but if you leave them closed only some diehard poster is likely to request opening it.

Besides which some episode boards around NitCentral occasionally go for a year or two without a post. I beleive there was one that hadn't had a post for three years before someone posted a comment.

Thanks for opening Doc Savage & moving the Superhero board.

By Butch the Mod on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 4:57 pm:

Thanks for your comments KAM. Always good to hear a thoughtful opinion. When I took over this board as well as NextGen and Classic Trek, they all had one thing in common. A great deal of clutter. Many discussions had few remarks or hadn't had a post in a year or more. In the interest of reducing the clutter, I created the storage areas and moved the dead topics there. I felt this was better than deleting them yet still had the effect of making it easier to find the active topics without having to scroll past a bunch of stuff that people had lost interest in.
I can see the other side in this, but I'm going to keep on doing things in the way I have been.
To anyone that may be wondering, I never remove or close a topic for a specific episode of a series, no matter how long it might go without a post.

By KAM on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 4:07 am:

What do you think of a Misc. Sci-Fi Books thread for books that might not get many posts and would otherwise be doomed to go to The Dusty Attic?

By Butch the Mod on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 5:01 pm:

Hmm. I'll think it over KAM.

By Butch the Mod on Monday, March 29, 2004 - 5:27 pm:

Alright, seems like a good idea to me. I've started a new thread under SciFi Authors and their Novels.

By KAM on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 2:37 am:

Ok, thanks. I should have something to post there in a few days.

By Felix Atagong on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 1:44 pm:

What about a Dan Brown section? It surely is science, it surely is fiction, but it ain't science fiction... what is it then... well, those things I would like to discuss...

By ScottN on Saturday, April 22, 2006 - 2:13 pm:

I'd put it in the non-SF novels. But that's just me.

By Butch Brookshier (Bbrookshier) on Monday, September 11, 2006 - 5:37 pm:

Since the Spambot seems to be targeting this thread, I'm closing it to posting for a time. Hopefully that will foil it.
