The Builders

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Monty Python And Other British Comedies: Fawlty Towers: The Builders
When a builder's work on the hotel lobby is done shoddily and not up to spec, fingers inevitably point to Basil and his choice of contractor - the cheap and cheerful Mr. O'Reilly.

The doorway to the kitchen already exists in the previous episode. It would make sense if this had been shown first, a bit like the Star Trek episode Where No Man Has Gone Before which was the 2nd pilot but was shown 3rd.

I've never looked at a garden gnome the same way since seeing this episode 20 years ago.

Curiously, IIRC, Mr. O'Reilly turned up many years later (same actor, same character), in Ballykissangel.

Great line (from memory):
O'Reilly: If the Good Lord..
Basil: ..is mentioned once more I shall move you closer to Him!

Well known Irish character actor David Kelly.

Great line: (also from memory)
Manuel: (on the phone to Basil) Who is man with beard?
Man with beard: That would be me
Manuel: (directed by Basil on phone) You are hideous baboon!
Man with beard hits Manuel

Man with beard played 'Bullet' Baxter in Grange Hill

GREAT SCENE:

Basil spanking himself while talking with Polly.
