John Cleese says he likes this one, calling it more character-driven, although this seems sort of out-of-place. The Fawltys have friends? And Basil really doesn't seem to have that great a motive for his elaborate scheming, I dunno. That said, it does provide some good character analysis of Basil, Sybil, and Polly.
I think the episode title is actually just The Anniversary.
Polly pretending to by Sybil is a hoot, as is the kitchen fight.
"Now, Cybil, let me just feel your glands."....."ouch!!"...."She hit me Basil."
"DON'T hit our friends!" "whack"
I think the major beef I have with this episode is that Basil IS trying to do something good rather than save his own bacon. It just doesn't make sense; I'd expect Basil to just make some sarcastic remarks to the friends and get them out of his hotel--it's not like they're guests or hotel inspectors.
MISSED OPPORTUNITY:
When Cybil returns to the hotel, she sees Basil & the guests. What I would have done is yell, "Surprise, Cybil!" and then say that Polly was the woman who looked like Cybil from downtown. This way, Basil could both surprise Cybil & reconcile with her at the same time.
For some reason, like I already said, Manuel seemed to be able to speak English a lot better in this one than he usually could.
Did anyone else besides me find Roger *incredibly* annoying? Because I sure did!
We see Sybil's friend Audrey for the first time in this one. She didnt show up in any other.
And the way Polly practically has to blackmail Basil into giving her the money for the car was pretty incredible, I thought. Basil appeared to be a real cheapskate and a skinflint. But I did like how Polly finally revealed all the things that she was *really* doing at the hotel. That was pretty cool.
John Cleese may like this one, but I still preferred the first series episodes better!
