My Hero

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Monty Python And Other British Comedies: It's.... The Kitchen Sink!: My Hero
By Sparrow47 on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 3:43 pm:

So our local PBS afilliate here in Albuquerque has started running a British comedy called "My Hero" nightly. So far they only seem to have two seasons' (or series') worth of episodes to air, so they go through them rather swiftly. Does anyone have any more information on the show? My family loves it and we're trying to spread the word around...

It's bafflingly popular over here in the UK - IMHO not a patch on "Father Ted" (Ardal O'Hanlon's other show, which admittedly is a hard act to follow). On the other hand, it does feature Hugh Dennis, one of my favourite comedians at the moment.

Hmmm, don't know that we get "Father Ted" over here, but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

But, anyway, have they produced a third season?

By Sven of Nine on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 12:48 pm:

I'm not sure - it's one of those new shows I don't get to see while I'm away from a TV set. (British sitcom series tend to be of the six-show variety usually, so naturally seasons exported to the US end up being relatively short, depending on how many shows have been made in total.)

There was a third series last year (2002). I think it ran to 10 episodes and added a 'super baby' to the mix.

By Sparrow47 on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 8:29 am:

Wait- that was the third series? Oops. 'Cause we've already got that. So, I guess we're up to date, then?

An update- our PBS station started running promos yesterday for an all new season (or series, take yer pick) of "My Hero," although they didn't indicate when they'd be starting. So, I guess there was a fourth season/series at some point?

By Edwin on Saturday, August 02, 2003 - 5:54 pm:

Fourth season starts in the UK on BBC1 on Friday 8 August.

Comcast Digital Cable On-Demand seems to be running the show again from the very beginning, for which I'm very grateful, but only the first four episodes are on the schedule...hmm.

By Snick on Friday, July 22, 2005 - 10:51 am:

And yes, it's a great show. Series 1 Episode 2 is stone hilarious, when George meets Janet's parents for the first time and is trying desperately to act like a normal human.

By ScottN on Friday, July 22, 2005 - 11:14 am:

BBC America plays it too. 3 eps in 2 hours (40 mins each, including commercials).

By ScottN on Friday, July 22, 2005 - 11:15 am:

Whoops, my bad! I was referring to Monty Python's Flying Circus! Please kill this post and the immediately preceding one!

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to shoot me.

By Snick on Friday, July 22, 2005 - 11:17 am:

It is odd, going back to the beginning after having seen half of Series 3 and 4. I was wondering how they'd use Arnie at the beginning, and I think it's better that he's in Northolt where he can interact with the rest of the cast in later seasons. It doesn't quite work to have him running a restaurant in New York and have British actors play his patrons. I've heard enough bad New York accents in four episodes...:-)

Mrs. Raven is much less of a diabolical misanthrope.

Tyler is a lot more sketchy and scary than in later seasons, where he's almost a lovable madman.

Piers hasn't changed much, although I'm bloody sick of his stupid catchphrase, which is used sparingly later on.

I didn't think I'd miss Ollie but I do.

Janet, for her part, is more loving toward George than when they're married, but I suppose that has some basis in reality. She's a lot more sympathetic to his stupidity.

Overall, it's really interesting to see the start, and I hope they play more eps.

I've already been catching MPFC on cable, ScottN. I'm about two more episodes away from having seen the entire run. Woo!
