Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Two: Vortex
Aired: 24 September, 2002

Lionel Luthor goes blind. Roger Nixon bites the big one. Chloe sobs. Lana becomes suspicious about Clark. Wrapping up Season One's "Tempest."

Was a little curious as to why Lex just happened to have a gun on him at the end. Seemed a little too convenient.

Otherwise, I thought it was a great start to the new season.

Possible Spoilers Ahead:

In TV Guide, it was stated that one of Clark's friends will find out his secret this season. After this episode, I suspect that it is either Lana or Chloe. I think that will be how they resolve the love triangle.

END SPOILERS.

OTHER COMMENTS:

>> Does anyone else think that Clark would be a better fit with Chloe? I know I do.

>> Though the really depressing part is that he ends up blowing off both Lana and Chloe for the infamous Lois Lane.

>> Two interesting things about Lionel Luthor. First, he's in the opening credits, so we'll be seeing a lot more of him. This is good because I really like that character. Second, I wonder if this blindness is something that Lex will take advantage of.

>> It is a HUGE (almost to the point of absurdity) coincidence that Jonathan Kent took shelter in an old basement and then a house fell right on top of it. And if that's not enough for ya, what are the odds that it would be lined with lead??

>> How did Lana even stay alive long enough for Clark to rescue her inside the tornado?

>> Ever wonder why Sam Jones III even goes to work every day? His character never gets to do anything except be Clark's sidekick.

>> When walking through the woods, a drop of blood suddenly falls onto Lex's head. At first, I thought it was just some random person's car stuck in the tree and that there was a dead and bleeding person inside. Later we discover that it is actually Nixon's car. If it was Nixon's car, who was inside bleeding? (Or was that not blood?)

>> So what made the ship suddenly power up and zoom off at superspeed just so it could plop itself down in the middle of a cornfield?

>> I really enjoyed this episode. I'm so glad that Smallville's back after the long summer! This is one of the best shows on television. (It probably WILL be the best show on television once they cancel Farscape next year, but don't even get me started on that.)

See ya later

I think it was oil not blood.

So what made the ship suddenly power up and zoom off at superspeed just so it could plop itself down in the middle of a cornfield?

In the last episode, that piece of the ship that Lex had was put into place (by Nixon, I think, who's not a crook, by the way...:)) on the ship, and apparently powered it up. The ship then flew into the tornado (for some reason; I don't know, maybe that piece contained flight instructions, or something), and in the tornado the piece fell out again, so the ship lost power.

Morgan is of the opinion that the ship was using Clark as a homing beacon.

It's certainly plausible...although I think it's a bit convenient that the battery to the ship isn't latched into place. I mean, at least we have battery covers!

TUE, it's actually Pete who will discover Clark's secret, in next week's episode.

OK. Here's a question...

When Clark and the Scobby gang were searching near the house Jonathan was buried under, Chloe hears the rockslide... but Clark DOESN'T!!?!! Does lead affect his super-hearing, too? I realize that there were meteor-rocks in that rockslide, but Clark didn't seem to show any adverse effects from them when he was on the surface. And we've never seen the meteor-rocks have a subtle effect on him.

Clark may not have gained super hearing yet. As of now, the best evidence (IIRC) that he has developed super hearing is this: one time, Martha spoke in a normal voice to Clark while he wore a walkman, and he heard her OK. Hardly the superhuman feat that would require Kryptonian powers to accomplish, I think. :)

I think it was in this episode that, near the end, Clark goes into the barn and finds Lana looking in his telescope. I was almost hoping she'd ask him why it was pointed at her bedroom window. :)

This quip inspired by the good folks on the "Nocturne" episode board and their mention of telescope-related stalking, which brought this musing back to mind.

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, October 27, 2002 - 7:04 am:

I could imagine Clark's response:

"Lana, I'd NEVER point my telescope at your bedroom window!

With my super-vision, I can see you showering at home from Borneo!"

By Mylan on Sunday, October 27, 2002 - 12:55 pm:

"What do you mean, pointed at your bedroom? Er... Pete was over the other day; I'll have to have a talk with him... yeah..."
