Crisis

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Three: Crisis

By Brian Lombard on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 7:11 am:

Well, we have another use for kryptonite.

By Blitz - Digimon Moderator (Sladd) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 7:28 am:

Smallville just gets more and more dangerous for poor Clark. Now he can't even go near your average puddle without it being full of meteor rocks.

When Clark speaks up while Sheriff Adams is questioning Lana at the begining, she asks if has growm a couple of inches and developed an affinity for flannel shirts. That's such a great line that I'm a little reluctant to point out that CLARK ISN'T WEARING ANY FLANNEL IN THIS ENTIRE EPISODE.

By Duke of Earl Grey on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 12:34 pm:

I probably wouldn't be wearing any flannel either if someone had just shot that barb my way and made me feel self-conscious.

By The Undesirable Element on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 2:17 pm:

Well, THAT was certainly interesting.

I have to admit that I was hoping that kryptonite was NOT involved in the time travel. Alas, it was not to be.

It didn't matter though. It provided ground for a great story.

The Downfall of Lionel Luthor has begun. This is really good stuff. It NEVER crossed my mind that Lionel would have a liver disease but it makes perfect sense. Meanwhile, Lex is starting to show his teeth again, which is always welcome.

One would think that getting smacked in the back with a crowbar would have serious repercussions for Jonathan since he just had open heart surgery last week.

Do they really just let anyone pick up a phone at the teen hotline? What if someone called and said, "I'm going to kill myself right now." What if Clark was actually a real smart a$$ and said, "Go for it man! Pull the trigger!" There should be some tighter restrictions here.

Meteor rocks are apparently near the telephone pole since green lightning is seen when it falls over. How is Clark able to use his strength to lift the pole up if he's so close to Kryptonite?

Possible Anti-Nit: Clark did seem to be struggling with the pole, perhaps the kryptonite did have an effect on him. However, usually, it's an all or nothing deal. Either the kryptonite makes him double over with pain and lose all power or else he is unaffected.

THE CLIFFHANGER: I assume Lionel is only contemplating suicide; however, I wonder if he will talk himself out of it or if something will happen that prevents him from pulling the trigger.

OVERALL OPINION OF THE WEEK:
A great episode. Both the Enterprise and Smallville episodes were excellent this week. That's always a real treat. I can't wait for more new episodes.

I think this is the first ever epsiode of Smallville to get the "Due To Mature Content" warning that shows like 24 and NYPD Blue thrive on.

By Blitz - Digimon Moderator (Sladd) on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 2:53 pm:

I must be pretty desensitized, because I didn't see what was more disturbing that usual about this episode.

I probably wouldn't be wearing any flannel either if someone had just shot that barb my way and made me feel self-conscious.

But, see, my point is that he wasn't wearing any when she said it.

By Brian Webber on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 10:37 pm:

Blitz: True, but every OTHER time she sees him, what is he usually wearing? :)

BTW, I must be desensitized too, though I think I've figured it out: I'm not sure, but the lab scene may be the single largest number of dead bodies we've ever seen in a single episode.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 11:08 pm:

Well, I’m sure MJ and the other Lana-haters just LOVED the teaser! :)

So Chloe’s a acoustics expert now? Oooooooooookay.

By going to see Gwen Burton, and then immediately running to her husband’s aid, Clark risked exposing his super speed to them, since Gwen and her husband might compare notes and realize Clark showed up to help Mr. Burton right after speaking with Gwen.

Okay, we gotta start a tote board now for uses for kryptonite: Now it can causes temporal anomalies when electrified!

By Machiko Jenkins (Mjenkins) on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 12:34 am:

MJ didn't get to see this yet, and may not be able to see it until hiatus. The tape popped out of the VCR at some point of taping, and I haven't checked it yet.

By Biggy on Friday, March 05, 2004 - 6:32 pm:

Good point. This episode got the mature warning label, yet "Obsession" a few weeks back didn't. That scene where Alicia showed up in Clark's bedroom was very steamy.

By Blitz - Digimon Moderator (Sladd) on Saturday, March 06, 2004 - 1:32 pm:

True, but every OTHER time she sees him, what is he usually wearing?

That's obviously what the writers were thinking, too, but it still sounds funny when he's not wearing any at the time of the line.

By Obi-Juan on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 7:29 pm:

Big sigh. As much as Lionel Luthor rules, the end is near for him. Ah, well...

Do they really just let anyone pick up a phone at the teen hotline? What if someone called and said, "I'm going to kill myself right now." What if Clark was actually a real smart a$$ and said, "Go for it man! Pull the trigger!" There should be some tighter restrictions here.- TUE
I think this is more of an advice line than a suicide hotline. Although the kid talking to Pete was talking about his parents' divorce, I think that a phone line manned entirely by teenagers is more for advice on homework and general teen stuff, dating tips, etc.

Meteor rocks are apparently near the telephone pole since green lightning is seen when it falls over. How is Clark able to use his strength to lift the pole up if he's so close to Kryptonite? - TUE
Clark actualy stopped and looked at the Kryptonite in the puddle, and made a deliberate effort to walk around it and find a spot to try to lift the pole. And, as you pointed out, it took Clark a couple of tries to lift the pole.

So Chloe’s a(n) acoustics expert now? Oooooooooookay. - Luigi Novi
Worse than that, Clark is an expert, too. I've played with those programs on computers. To filter out all sound but one requires the user to identify each sound, and to gradually tune out the unwanted. It's a lot of trial and error, and takes a while, even for a pro. Chloe and Clark both accomplish what they're doing with 2 or 3 clicks of the mouse.

Did Lana actually give her location over the phone before Adam shot her? I didn't hear her say she was at the storage place.

What good does shooting Lana do for Adam? He needs his medicine, and he thinks she's holding out on him. If he kills her he has no chance to find the vials. If he believes that she is telling him the truth, what good does killing her do?

Clark lets slip that he knows that Lex was at the top-secret, high security lab. When Lex calls him on it, Clark's response was "Don't turn this around on me, Lex!" That's it?? Lex is slipping.

So, Jonathan looks outside, sees Chloe in the truck. Does he seem particularly dense in this scene, or was it just me? He seemed to be waiting to get hit from behind. And why did he take the rifle outside with him? Why not leave it with Lana?

Lana knocked Adam down twice during the chase through the storage warehouse, and both times he dropped the rifle. Too bad she didn't try to pick it up.

Clark: So Adam was shooting at you, and you were running for your life in a rainstorm. Why did you call the teen hotline instead of 911?
Lana: Becuase I knew you'd be there.
Homer: Doh!!

Great tie-in that the research was into persons with liver diseases, and they reveal that Lionel is suffering from an unknown liver disease. Once again reinforces that Lionel always has an angle. But I don't care how bad the disease might be, no way does Lionel eat a bullet.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 11:05 pm:

Obi-Juan: Big sigh. As much as Lionel Luthor rules, the end is near for him.
Luigi Novi: Why does everyone keep assuming this? All I saw was him contemplating using the gun. Nothing indicates that he was definitely going to. If we had heard a gunshot after the shot had faded to black, that would be a different story.

Obi-Juan: What good does shooting Lana do for Adam? He needs his medicine, and he thinks she's holding out on him. If he kills her he has no chance to find the vials. If he believes that she is telling him the truth, what good does killing her do?
Luigi Novi: Nothing. But look at the state he's in. Obviously, he's missing a few French Fries from his Happy Meal, if you catch my drift.

By Blitz - Digimon Moderator (Sladd) on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 1:30 pm:

Should those background noises on teh call really be clear enough to be found? I mean, they'd have to survive through a cell phone, a casette tape, AND some computer speakers AFTER the distortion from the whole lightning bolt/meteor rocks deal. Since I'm not the acoustic prodigies Clark and Chloe are, I'm quite open to being shot down, but it seems to me that some noise in the background just should have been garbled beyond salvation.

By Art Vandelay on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 - 2:01 am:

It looked like Clark superzipped out of the Youth Centre at the start, they certainly put in the sound effects for it. Obviously there were other ppl in the room at the time, how could they not notice especially with attention on him from shouting down the phone.

Why didn't the writers just show Lana falling down in the teaser as if she had been shot, instead of the close up of her bleeding. They didn't show what Clark did to change history allowing him to get there in time.

Clark had to struggle to catch up with bullets in S1, now he can zip across town (say), leaving after it had been fired, and still get there in time to stop it. I know his powers are still growing but why didn't they show him leaving just before Adam pulled the trigger?

Art: BILC.

By Todd Pence on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 - 7:56 pm:

Too bad that Clark, preoccupied with dealing with the crisis, din't find time to contact a bookie and make a bet on the final score of the basketball game. He could have made himself and his family a tidy sum of money.
