Krypto

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Four: Krypto
By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 12:01 am:

Okay, so it wasn't the real Krypto (makes sense, since the real Krypto is a white dog, is Kryptonian, and not some Irish Setter or whatever named "Shelby"), but still a episode with some nice nods to the mythos. The red towel draped over the dog at the end of the episode was priceless.

Clark and Lois hide behind the armored truck after the two hooligans hop inside, and then Clark tells Lois to see if she can help the guardsmen. If I were Lois, I would've said, "Why, what are you gonna do?" Also, by scurring over there, Lois should've been spotted by the driver thug in his rear view mirror (and likely heard by them).

When Clark throws the two baddies against the side of the house, they bounce off the wall. BOUNCE.

For the second consecutive episode, Clark and Lana had no scenes together. Of course that will change next week, with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Lana.

STUPID CRIMINALS OF THE WEEK, PART 1:
The criminals can't let Clark go because he's seen too much. But then they bring their van back to their SECRET HIDEAWAY in order to blow it up. Noooo, that won't be a dead giveaway as to your guilt.

STUPID CRIMINALS OF THE WEEK, PART 2:
When Clark releases Shelby, the dog door swings open and knocks the kryponite vials onto the floor. Why were these vials placed on the dog cage in such a precarious position? This stuff must be worth a fortune, and these d-bags just throw it on the cage. No brains.

STUPID CRIMINALS OF THE WEEK, PART 3:
Did it not occur to the criminals that if the dogs would attack innocents that they might attack them as well.

DAYDREAMING LOIS OF THE WEEK:
Clark does his X-ray vision on the dog and finds an electronic ID tag under the dog's skin. When Lois comes back, Clark tells Lois this. Why doesn't Lois wonder how Clark found it UNDER THE DOG'S SKIN!!??

HARDA$$ OF THE WEEK:
When Jonathan comes out of the doctor's office, he says that the doctor told him that he never saw a dog who could chew to the bone. This implies that the black dog was able to bite down to Jonathan's arm bone. Now, I've never been very seriously wounded like that, but wouldn't that HURT LIKE H*LL?? And wouldn't that require a bit more than a cast? He just about got his arm torn off!!

LAX SECURITY OF THE WEEK:
Lex tells Clark that animal rights activists were all over the place during the experiments on the dogs. Just how did the general public find out about this? I assume they didn't know exactly what was being done, but if Lionel wants to keep something secret, he usually has the ability to do so.

IRRESPONSIBLE CLARK OF THE WEEK:
Once Clark realizes that Shelby's strength comes from kryptonite, shouldn't turning the dog over to Lex be a very good idea. Given that most humans (and one of the dogs in this episode) turn into raving lunatics on the stuff, shouldn't Clark take that into account. Yeah, he wants to give the dog a chance and all that, but he's willing to put his family in danger in order to save a dog! (Yeah yeah, he was a cute dog and all that. I like golden retreivers as much as the next guy, but I like my right arm too!)

STRONG METAL OF THE WEEK:
How could a metal cage restrain the super-powered dogs?

OVERALL OPINION OF THE WEEK:

This was the stupidest episode I've ever seen.

The basic idea was okay in a half-serious kinda way, and it worked when they treated it as a kind of ludicrous story. I think this episode would have worked better if it had been straight comedy that just went for broke.

Instead, we have the "EVIL VET BROTHERS" who want to use super powered dogs to pull off some petty heists. Lex and Clark have issues over a freakin dog. And then Jonathan nearly gets his arm torn off.

The episode was entertaining enough. The Clark and Lois banter was great, and I was interested to see what happens. But everything that happened was SOOOOO stupid, cliched, and ridiculous.

The subplot with Lex, Lionel, and the Teagues was interesting. I'd like to see where that's going.

TUE

"WHO LET THE DOGS OUT!!??"

By John-Boy on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 5:02 pm:

The subplot with Lex, Lionel and the Teagues was boring and pointless, I kept asking myself "who really cares about this plotline?

And of course this wasn't the "REAL" Krypto, this is a TV show, not the comic book, and the show has never gone directly by what the comics have done.

By KGood on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 7:17 pm:

Jane Seymour. Definite MILF.

I use to think so when she was "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman"! :)

Not me, I think it's been dragging down the entire season.

If anyone has the show on tape, see if you can confirm this nitpick. Jane Seymore told her son that they were the ANCESTORS of the french witch lady's enemy. Unless there's some (very lame) time travel aspect to this (very lame) storyline, I think it's much more likely they are her decendants.

By Stevie_Mac on Friday, February 18, 2005 - 9:56 am:

So the bad guys were stealing the LexCorp payroll, right? Don't most companies pay their employess with cheques or direct deposit these days? Why couldn't the writers have just made it a bank truck?

By elwood on Friday, February 18, 2005 - 1:18 pm:

Well,
the Doctors words about the strengh
of the dog..
never seen one to byte through to the bone...

even without beeing kryptosuperpowered
a big dog like this could do that easily.
Dogs like this would have no problem braking the bone.

Did I miss something...
I thought I heard that the effect on the dogs was only temporarily, the bros did have injections there and the green liquid was for that purpose,
right?

So the strengh of Shelby should wear of soon?

I caught that one too. She definitely said "ancestors".

Thanks for the confirmation, Ryan!

Nice episode, if a little corny at some parts. At least, the parts with "Shelby" were all right. The conflict of the week left something to be desired. And it seems that the Lana/Jason story is more interesting when absolutely nothing happens. Cute dog though. And wacky Lionel hair. What was up with that?

I loved Lois's comment on Clark naming his next dog Krypto.

Wow, that ancestors line really jumped out. Hard to believe that no one caught that.

Personally, had I been Clark while breaking into the animal shelter, I would have been a little more subtle breaking those locks around Lois.

How exactly does kryptonite affect Clark? Does it emit radiation or something? Wouldn't that go through the truck and hit Clark if he was still leaning against it after he got out?

And speaking of the kryptonite, when Clark saves the dog from the burning truck, the kryptonite is still glowing. Why isn't it affecting him anymore?

Luigi Novi: not some Irish Setter or whatever
Looked to me like a golden retriever.

Did they say it was their place? It might have been some old abandoned place that they just knew about.

I caught the Ancestors line too.
