Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Four: Onyx

By Duke of Earl Grey on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 - 8:01 pm:

How convenient that with his heat vision Clark was able to find and maintain the exact temperature (like that doctor at the beginning said had been so challenging for him to figure out) needed to make black kryptonite from Lex's ring. Convenient indeed. But speaking of that ring, that was a nice nod to Superman lore.

You know, I think that was the best episode of this season so far (which may not be saying a lot). A glimpse of Lex's ultimate villainy, the return of evil Lionel (hopefully), some good stuff.

By MythicFox on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 - 11:20 pm:

I agree that there was a lot to this episode, and it was certainly nice to go one episode without hearing something about the Kryptonian talismans that everyone's after. At least now we have some sort of context for whatever the heck "black Kryptonite" is. It's what they used for the Tiger talisman on "Jackie Chan Adventures."

But Lex not remembering what happened? *cough*-b#ll$#!t-*cough*

It looks like next week, though, we're going to get yet another episode where the girls have their emotions affected, Clark gets caught in it and is probably the only one to suspect that something's affecting them. He'll be put into yet another situation it looks like he'll be forced to choose between Lana, Chloe, and (for some reason) Lois and will find some way to completely dodge the issue. And then he'll leave the prom early to save everyone's lives while they don't even realize it.

Sorry to sound bitter, but with a few exceptions this season's been bouncing between predictable and disappointing. Tonight's episode was alright, but nothing we really haven't seen before.

To be honest, I'm actually going to miss seeing the reformed Lionel. We really haven't had the time or opportunity to explore the idea as to whether he's really reformed since his release from prison or not. He's been showing up for about two minutes per episode to proclaim that he's changed, and then he fades into the backdrop. I was hoping they'd make more out of it than that, but it looks like we're back to business as usual.

Sorry, again, I really hate to sound bitter. But can any of you blame me?

How the hell did the Kents get away from EviLex? Before the commerical he's got them at gunpoint, in the barn, ring keeping Clarkie away. We come back, hospital scene. Did the writers just not have any idea how to have them get away so they just didn't bother? Sheesh.

Did anyone else think the kryptonite machine at the beginning looked a bit like the Autobot Matrix of Leadership?

It was kind of funny when Lex tried to push the scientist out of the way of the explosion and instead just knocked him over and he hit his head. Well, maybe not LOL funny, but at least odd.

Not really. After all, Clark didn't remember anything after the Black Kryptonite was used on him at the begining of the series.

Now, what I want to know is how EvilLex managed to appear IN A FULL SET OF CLOTHES. Is that the evil side of Lex's wardrobe?

Also, once again, Clark seems to forget the obvious way out of a situation. Why not ACTUALLY scoot out from under the falling slab of death rather than take it head on (well, back on is more like it) and have to lie about it?

What's up with that dead guard in the lab? Are we supposed to assume that EvilLex killed him? Probobly, but why on Earth would he do that? If he wanted the guy gone, he could just tell him to scram! Speaking of which, Lex goes around appologizing to everyone for being a jerk, yet no one seems to remember the MURDERS that EvilLex commited. Did he just say "Sorry, my evil twin did it" and get off the hook for that too?

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, April 14, 2005 - 2:50 pm:

Ugh. Cliched doppelganger premise, the usual lousy physics that goes along with it (where did all that extra mass needed to make EvilLex come from?), huge plot holes (why is such an important experiment being overseen by just one scientist and the guy funding it?), scenes that made no sense (How is it that EvilLex has the Kent family at gun point in their barn at the end of one Act, but then they're in the hospital in the beginning of the next one?), etc. Pass.

It's pretty ironic that Lionel's reform into a decent guy is done away with by Lex, of all people (or at least his evil clone). I'd find it interesting if the evil Lex that becomes Supes' nemesis later in life is really the Evil Lex from this episode, who it is later revealed was the only one left after they re-merged.

Lex tries to take the Talon away from Lana. Didn't he do this before? And didn't he make it at the end of that ep so that he'd never be able to do so again? Or am I misremembering that?

So if "Transference" was "Turnabout Intruder," was this "The Enemy Within?"

I'm Captain Kirk!
I'M CAPTAIN KIRK!!
I'MMMMM CAPTAIN KIIIIRRRRKKKK!!!

Or "Spock's Brain":

"Jonathan, Clark's brain is gone!"

If you guys think you can make a better show, then why don't you become writers? Id LOVE to see what you all could put out!

By Brian Lombard on Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 5:47 pm:

I can love a show and still make fun of it. Hence my book, Bradypalooza.

By John-Boy on Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 5:58 pm:

yea ive heard that excuse before too, pass.

By anon on Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 10:26 pm:

I might not be able to make a better show, simply because I lack the millions of dollars required to produce a weekly network television series, but I d@mn sure can watch a better show. Unfortunately, this week Lost was a rerun.

By John-Boy on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 4:12 pm:

So on your TV you only get ABC and The WB? :)

By Brian Lombard on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 5:54 pm:

Well, it's hardly an excuse. If I didn't love the show, I wouldn't own the DVDs. That said, not every episode is gonna be an original concept. And even when they do rip off old Star Treks, they do it better than the original. I mean, the whole body swap concept has been done so many times it's a cliche. Yet "Transference" ranks as one of the best episodes of the season, IMHO. Way better than the original concept idea that was "Bound."

By MythicFox on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 10:07 pm:

Not really. After all, Clark didn't remember anything after the Black Kryptonite was used on him at the begining of the series.

Personally, I never totally bought that, either. The last thing that Clark's parents wanted to hear was that he was aware of what he'd done and let them think that some of what Jor-El did has stuck with him. I keep thinking of the Season 2 episode of BtVS when Xander gets possessed by the hyena spirit.

By Josh M on Thursday, April 21, 2005 - 4:15 pm:

I guess I'm in the minority here when I say that I actually liked this one. I really liked Rosenbaum's performance (although a few parts he went over the top). And while it seems improbable that Lionel would have a change of heart because of that duel, it's nice to have the Magnificent B-word back. Must be my Luthor Love. Helps me get past plot holes.

But come on, could they really not think up a better line than "I'll never join you!"?

A kryptonite ring. Gotta love the nods to the comics.

I wonder why Lex just left the Kents in their barn. Did he really want to get Clark to come to the mansion that badly?

That EviLex/Lana scene sure felt familiar. At least we didn't get a "Who the HELL do you think you are!?!?" this time.

Luigi Novi: I'd find it interesting if the evil Lex that becomes Supes' nemesis later in life is really the Evil Lex from this episode, who it is later revealed was the only one left after they re-merged.
Personally, I think that that would make it too black and white. I like knowing that normal Lex has that capability of evil inside of him, and that he eventually reaches the point where it is prevalent.

By anon on Friday, April 22, 2005 - 12:35 am:

So on your TV you only get ABC and The WB?

No, but Fox had that horrid Paris Hilton whore's show on in that timeslot, NBC had some stupid "DaVinci Code" cr@p-o-rama on, UPN had that Who Wants to be an Anorexic Supermodel, and CBS had 60 Minutes which I wouldn't watch even before they started forging documents.

So it was Lost or Smallville, and Lost was a rerun.

By John-Boy on Friday, April 22, 2005 - 4:42 pm:

So you only get ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, THE WB AND UPN? I get about 70 channels and if I had to make a choice between a show that was a rerun and a show that i don't really like, I'd try to find something else on the other channels I have.

And Josh M, you are not the only person that liked this episode.

By anon on Friday, April 22, 2005 - 11:54 pm:

Well, I didn't feel like listing the rest of the crud not worth watching that night, so I only did the networks, since there's rarely anything worth watching on cable in primetime, anyway.

And it's still not really relevant, because your comment about "If you guys think you can make a better show, then why don't you become writers?" was utterly ridiculous in the first place. I note you never bothered with my reply that I might not be able to make a better show, simply because I lack the millions of dollars required to produce a weekly network television series, and simply focused on the 2nd part, WHICH WAS A JOKE.

That's the thing, it was just a joke. I may think Smallville is cr@p now, but considering I've been a huge comicbook mark for the last 20 years and have been regularly collecting Superman since the Post-Crisis Man of Steel miniseries, I feel obligated to watch this trainwreck no matter how horrible it gets. And I likewise feel obligated to bring up problems when discussions of the show come up.

It's called the internet, ripping on stuff is one of its primary functions.

(I realize upon previewing that this may come off as sounding angry at you. I don't really intend it to, but it's sometimes hard to tell stuff like that over text based communications, so I thought I better mention it. I am not mad at you. No hard feelings. :))

By John-Boy on Saturday, April 23, 2005 - 3:37 pm:

No hard feelings taken anon, and I meant none towards you. Lets drop it. :)

By anon on Thursday, April 28, 2005 - 12:19 am:

Gladly! :)

By Wolverine on Monday, May 01, 2006 - 7:53 am:

If you see the extra on the DVD, you can see how EvilLex kills the guard. The reason is that the guard saw GoodLex on his monitor, so EvilLex had to kill him.
