Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Five: Splinter

Good episode. I liked the references to the comics, and even the divergences from it. The developments between Chloe and the Kents and between Clark and Brainiac/Miles were also welcome.

But didn't those issues sell pretty well?
COMIC REFERENCE OF THE WEEK: "Even if you were President of the United States, you think that's gonna make any difference?" --Lionel to Lex, in Act 5.

COMIC BOOK DIVERGENCE OF THE WEEK #1: In the comics, Silver K was a "fictional" variety used in a hoax perpetrated by Superman's friends, in honor of the 25th (or "silver") anniversary of Superman's arrival on Earth. In this episode, it's revealed to be real. Nice twist. :)

COMIC BOOK DIVERGENCE OF THE WEEK #2: Brainiac is Coluan in the comics. This episode establishes him to be Kryptonian. This probably serves the series a bit better, in that it (along with the fact that he appears to be a benevolent character, at least to Clark) allows a character with stronger ties to Clark to "lure him to the Dark Side."

When Clark goes to see Chloe at the Planet, he tells her that there are only three people on Smallville who know his secret: Her, and his parents. Well, who says whoever was behind the black truck that he thinks ran him off the road was from Smallville? For all he knows, Pete was the weak link, and the people he imagined in that SVU could've learned his secret from him. Then again, I guess he is paranoid...

After Clark renders Lex unconscious in Act 4, he goes after Lana, but uses his hearing first, and not his X-Ray vision, even though he's been using his X-Ray vision longer. Only after going into another room does he use his XRV.

Nice Superman reference. In one of Clark's hallucinations, Lex describes him as a "strange visitor from another planet." That's a quote from the 1950's tv series starring George Reeves.

The shot of Clark sitting in Fine's class was reversed. You can tell because Clark's hair was parted on the wrong side, but it was back to normal in the next shot.

Something I thought, if "Professor Fine" can grow a weapon and kill someone, (like he did to that guard who followed him to the ship)
would there be much of a streatch to think that Fine could change shape and change in to a big, BLACK truck?
or am I getting paraniod???

"....Brainiac is Coluan in the comics. This episode establishes him to be Kryptonian."

Unless, of course, he's lying. :)

Good point.

The whole truck that ran Clark off the road might have been imagined by Clark. Or at least thats the way I looked at it.

And HOW is it a nit that he used his super hearing first instead of his X Ray vision just because hes had the vision longer? The hearing served him better in this instance.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, November 11, 2005 - 6:25 pm:

How so? Wouldn't he have seen Lana running away if he used his XRV? And wouldn't it come more naturally to him, since he's been using it longer than his hearing?

And yeah, I agree about the truck.

On second thought, I guess maybe it would come more natural to him.

One of the e-mails on Chloe's computer is from Lana, and the subject line reads "You Coming Out?"

Write your own joke about that one.

Uh,..That could go soo many ways I'm almost afraid to go there.
As far as the episode goes I saw it twice and if you pay attention you can almost tell when Clark is seeing things and whats real.
One other quick comment, if the black truck wasn't real how did Clark manage to flip HIS so many times? there didn't seem to be anything in the road for him to hit and even with his strength I can't see how he could flip the one he was driving while he was behind the wheel.
Just a thought.
