Solitude

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Five: Solitude

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 10:54 pm:

In terms of the Jor-El/Brainac storyline, this episode was a disappointment. There was no real progression for Clark, his understanding of Krypton or his biological father, or anything really. His vanquishment of Fine/Brainiac felt mostly arbitrary, and not really any different from how he did beat the Phantom Zone villains at the end of Arrival.

The best part of the episode was the Superman Returns trailer, and even that had one glaring problem that I do not like:

Superman is supposed to have BLUE EYES!!!!!!! What, they can't rangle up some contact lenses for Brandon Routh, or at least CGI his peepers? Christ, you'd think they'd understand that Superman is supposed to have blue eyes.

I wonder, when does the Superman Returns movie take place? ... AFTER the last movie, or between something, And who is the villian?

Was it just me or did this episode feel rushed toward the end, almost like TPTB at WB didn't have a story to tell about Jor-El, Kal-Els dad. I was almost hoping that Jor-El was going to ask why BRAINIAC was there.. Speaking of which did it strike anyone else as kinda odd that only the viewers knew that this was Brainiac, He never called himself that, only .."I am Kriptonian like you.."
kinda left me wondering huh?
next ep. reminds me of a scene from "A Chirstmas Carol." with Lex sitting by the fireplace.
or was it just me?

Wow Luigi. Wow. You're really passionate about this.

BTW, Dean Cain (no blue eyes) was a memorable Superman to me. He was the Superman that I more or less grew up with, before the cartoon began anyway.

By Biggy on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 4:52 am:

Interesting. Two out of the last three episodes have had no Lana whatsoever.

Kevin Spacey plays Lex Luthor in "Superman Returns," so it sounds like he be the villain.

Have you driven a Ford lately? That security guard has issues if he's more interested in Lois's car than in her Lois herself.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 11:58 am:

To each his own, John-Boy. Passionate? Yeah, I'm a comic book purist (and for that matter, a purist of , and feel

But seriously, "Grew up with"? You were 18-22 when it was on! :) You're saying the Christopher Reeve films weren't the formative exposure to it for you? Oh well.

By Chris Todaro on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 12:34 pm:

My first exposure to Superman was the black and white George Reeves TV show, so I had no preconceptions that Superman had to have blue eyes. I thought the trailer looked great, and it was almost spooky to hear Marlon Brandau as Jor-el. My understanding is that the movie takes place just after the events in Superman II.

"There was no real progression for Clark, his understanding of Krypton or his biological father, or anything really."

I've gotta respectfully disagree with you there, Luigi. It's subtle, but I think they're starting to come to the conclusion that Jor-el isn't really evil, just alien. They will probably rebeal more little by little. (Keeps you tuning in, doesn't it? :) )

By ScottN on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 2:20 pm:

Uh, Luigi? That was Josh, not John-Boy.

By Josh M on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 4:35 pm:

Confusing me for John-Boy? Ouch Luigi. Ouch. That stings.

And, I would just like to add, I have yet to see any of Reeve's films. I do plan to eventually get around to it. But then there are a lot of movies I "eventually" plan to see.

Re: "Professor Milton Fine"'s arc

Can we be 100% sure that this arc is over? After all, we're only about one third of the way through season five (a lot more episodes to go). Maybe reports of the professor's death are being greatly exaggerated.

Re: The "Superman Returns" trailer

Great first trailer (I anticipate at least one more trailer which reveals substantially more of the plot and the cast). The best thing about the trailer, in my opinion, was that it evoked the 1978 movie, "Superman: The Movie" (with Brando's voice-over as "Jor El" from the earlier movie, and with cues from John Williams' score for that movie). As for the color of Superman's eyes, I don't mind that particular deviation from the comics. It seems a minor deviation to me. On the other hand, if Lois Lane was a blonde, I'd have an objection.

By John-Boy on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 5:58 pm:

How do you think I feel? Being confused with Josh? :)

I thought this was a kick ass episode. Finally they seemed to have moved away from the "Mutant of the week" rut they were stuck in and am getting into the Superman stuff! And Cloe really saved the day in this one!

And I have to agree, Its hard to belive that that guard was more interested in a FORD (****ed Over Re-built Dodge) than Lois! Maybe hes . . . well . . . you know? A bit like George Takei? :)

By John Boy on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 7:42 pm:

Hey, isn't the first line of Josh's 5:35 pm post "ad hominon" (however you spell it, I only took english in high school)?

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, November 18, 2005 - 11:36 pm:

Sorry about the confusion on my part, guys.

And no, his comment was not an ad hominem argument. It wasn't even an argument at all.

By John-Boy on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 6:17 pm:

Where in my post did I say "argument"?

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, November 19, 2005 - 11:13 pm:

That's what an ad hominem comment it. It's a type of argument. You can look it up at wikipedia.

By John Boy on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 10:03 am:

When people were saying that i was ad homineming people, it was always an attack that i was doing. I've never heard it called an "argument" on here, but if you say so, then fine. I guess that makes Josh's post just an attack on me.

Chloe has nice jugs.

By Josh M on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 5:41 pm:

:)

Forgot something.

BTW, I can't say that I disagree with Non-Sequiter.
