Fragile

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: Season Five: Fragile
By MarkN on Friday, April 14, 2006 - 12:28 am:

I didn't understand how an 11yo girl's telekinetic powers, that she'd inherited from her father, could be even stronger than his when he would've of course had his for at least twice her lifetime and thus developed them that much more strongly, so instead of him being overcome by her power he should've been able to fight back and win.

Was it just me or did anyone else pick up on Lex's little dig at Chloe with what he meant when he said he finally started to see why she's never had a steady boyfriend? Gosh, what do you think he could've been implying, hmm? I think it was just cuz she's had a crush on Clark for years, not that she'd tell Lex that, but I forget if she ever told Clark. Or did she and that's why he showed her the Fortress of Solitude? Again, I only watch episodes once so I don't easily retain what all happens in this or that one.

I got the dig right away.

I believe Chloe did tell Clark how she felt. He responded that he didn't have the same feelings for her.

As far as the child being able to overcome her father's powers, it could be a sort of "adrenoline" thing when she thought Clark was in danger. (She didn't know that shards of glass can't hurt him.)

And Tom Welling did an excellent job directing the episode.

The moments in the episode were good, but it didn't really add up to anything substantial.

First, I'm glad that this FOTW was never considered to be much of a threat. He starts throwing glass everywhere, and Clark just walks right through like he's... well... Superman. The whole conflict was personal even though we had the lame meteor freak presence.

The parallels between Maddie's and Clark's relationships with their fathers was nicely handled.

Why did the father wait so long to abduct Maddie? Couldn't he have done so once the initial foster mother was killed?

CLARK HAD TOO MUCH ON HIS MIND??? Now granted, this issue with Maddie was important, but he couldn't spare a few seconds to tell his mother that LIONEL LUTHOR KNOWS HIS SECRET???? I was willing to let it slide (albeit barely) last week, but there is just no excuse here.

Lex says that if there really is an alien threat, the government will have more important things to worry about than Lana Lang. Well what if there ISN'T an alien threat? I'd think the government might suddenly develop an interest in Lana Lang.

Clark's heat vision should have melted the glass at his mother's neck not blasted it away.

Does Lois even have a real life anymore?

At one point, Chloe mentions that evidence indicates that Maddie killed her own mother in a car accident. Did this really happen then? The episode tries to pass off the other deaths as her father's fault, but he was in prison at the time of Maddie's mother's death.

That is a brilliant crackerjack police force that Smallville has. Let's send four-eyes to escort the criminal who can control glass! Rarely does anyone wear glasses on this show, but when we need to escort this guy, suddenly we can't find anyone with 20/20 vision.

I'm beginning to think that Tom Welling has the best chemistry with actors and actresses who are under the age of 13. Some of his best work is done opposite children.

I didn't think this was too bad. The whole thing with Clark not telling his mother about Lionel really stuck in my a$$, but the main story wasn't TOO terrible. I still think this show is relying WAY too much on the FOTW formula. Next week's episode, however, looks REALLY interesting.

TUE

"There's no glass."
"Forcefield."
"I've never seen that kind of technology."
"That's because it hasn't been invented yet."

ok...
I'm seriosly p$$ed. here in Tucson, Arizona they showed baseball instead of Smallville, now I read here that it was on !!!!
If I COULD, if I had it in my power to do so I'd send a curse out to any and ALL t.v. stations that if TPTB decide to preempt the usual progamming with ANY sport... the "Hometeam" will not just lose, but have a 5yr losing streak.

rant mode off.

Supposedly, Clark's self-portrait stick-figure, drawn earlier in the episode, is what Maddie returned to Clark with her own art added. But it's clearly not the same thing Clark drew. The one scribbly hand is drawn the same, held up, but the eyes are completely different, and the other hand is (in the first version) on his hip, then (in the second) drawn holding Maddie's hand.

Y'know, on top of 'Smallville FOTWs,' we should establish a catchy name or acronym for the contrived excuses they use to keep Lois on the show.

I still say that the way things are going, something's going to happen to Martha's Senate position and then Lois will wind up marrying either Lex or Lionel for no apparent reason.

And I know that this is the WB we're talking about and AOL product placement is a given as a result, but am I the only one that thinks that Lex would be using a more secure network for his secret emails and video transmissions? Heck, you'd think LuthorCorp would have its own OS or email program or something specially designed for this purpose. I can see the slogan now... "LexOS-- For when your computer needs to work while we take it over."

It's generally an accepted part of many 'mythos' involving mutants/metahumans/post-humans that the children of people with powers tend to manifest abilities as strong or stronger than their parents. There's also the fact that she's grown up with her abilities, and if I recall correctly he got his from a standard meteor-freak accident. So he hasn't really had said abilities for 'twice her lifetime,' while hers have always been a part of her.

It's a safe bet that it was Maddie who caused her mother's death.

I thought it was supposed to be a different picture using the idea of the stick figure, not the same one.

Another standoff where Clark could have used his superspeed to save the day. He can move faster than a speeding bullet so could have gotten to that shard of glass easily.

How come Clark's superhearing (or his regular hearing) didn't hear the breaking glass in the kitchen door when his mother was abducted.

Were those windows hanging the barn in previous episodes? I can't remember seeing them before.

The set that was used for Maddie's foster mother's home looked suspiciously like a redress of the Kent house.

Clark did a great job of nurturing Ryan, er excuse me, Maddie.

Chloe had a boyfriend back in "Crush," but he got run out of town and ended up living in the O.C.

How come Lois so quickly assumed the social services guy was in fact from social services?

He should have provided some identification. For all we know it could have been some impostor..
