Hah! I called it! Mindtaking!

I really liked what happened in this episode; however, the pacing of it was WAY too fast. As a result, many things are left unclear:

1. So was Lex turned into a Kryptonian in this episode? What was the point of him being a Brainiac clone as shown when he cut his finger last week? Is he even the real Lex or is the real one hidden somewhere?

2. Why in the name of all that is holy did throwing the knife at Brainiac result in Zod being released? What's even stranger is that Clark seemed to know what he did. He says "What have I done?" after he's thrown the knife at Fine.

3. What was the point of gathering all of those biological viruses if Brainiac was going to create a computer virus?

I can't stand Lana Lang. Two scenes emphasize this point. First is the Clark/Lana confrontation. "I can't believe I ever loved you." Well, how about those bazillion times that Clark's saved your life you ingrate?? What is her infatuation with secrets anyway? And there's a big difference between trust and secrecy. My parents have secrets, but I still trust that they keep these things secret for a reason. I can't even understand why she's supposed to be so likable. She comes off as obnoxious and arrogant most of the time.

Then we have the big one. The Lana/Zod conversation at the end of the episode. The entire world is on the brink of Armageddon, and she waltzes into Luthorcorp to find Lex on the roof in order to tell him that she wants to be his girlfriend. WHAT A DUMBA$$!! The world is falling apart around you, and you're worried about starting a relationship??

GRAR!!!!!!!!!!

Alright... moving onto other things...

>> So apparently Los Angeles and New York exist in the DC universe. I was under the impression that Gotham City was a replacement for New York City. That would have been cool. Label those images as "Gotham City," "Edge City," or other comic book places.

>> When they show those two cities, I believe it's daytime, but when they show Metropolis, everything is happening at night. Given that the virus began at night (the lights of Metropolis were shown shutting down) and the episode continues that very night, Los Angeles and New York should be dark as well.

>> Why was Clark sucked into the Phantom Zone but Lex was safe?

>> Why would Chloe leave the Daily Planet building? Why not just find a safe room and stay there until things calm down? The streets do not seem like a safe place to be.

>> Would the entire world really just go insane if the power went out. I mean, after a couple days, I might understand that, but it's like everyone loses it the instant the power goes out.

>> What does Zod see in Lana Lang at the end? Why would he kiss her? Is she really just THAT GREAT? She's not only apparently the greatest woman on Earth, but she's an intergalactic babe as well? Will the Lana fawning never end? Shouldn't Zod be underwhelmed by such a worthless human creature?

>> Why is Zod even on the LuthorCorp roof? Lex made the promise to be there. Is this just a coincidence or is something of Lex still in there?

Well, aside from the pacing problems and the fact that Lana Lang is a total b|tch, this was a pretty good cliffhanger. The world is in ruins, Clark is in the Phantom Zone, and General Zod is on the loose. This is some high stakes stuff right here.

Maybe he figured, "Well...Any port in a storm."

In this case, I think that Lana bashers have a very strong point. Until now, I was willing to dismiss some of the things she had said and done as just immature, but here she comes off as downright evil.

Although I also wonder why Clark refused to fill her in when she asked what's going on. She's already up to her arpits in the whole situation. How much more danger could he possible put her in by telling her the truth at this point?

Forgot to mention:

I liked the origins of Brainiac's name: Brain Inter-Active Control. BRAIN-I-A-C. Heh.

Superman: What are you talking about? Humanity doesn't need protection from us.
Professor Emil Hamilton: I used to believe that. I thought you were a guardian angel come to answer our prayers. But Lucifer was an angel too, wasn't he?

Clark's concern was having Lana ask him how he knows about what Fine is, what he's up to, what the danger is to Lex and everyone else, and what exactly Clark thinks he can do about it.

I think he's more or less a Kryptonian now, but the process of turning him into the vessel had a few steps. The whole thing with the vaccine and Brainiac-healing was part of that. He probably didn't get anything more than Brainiac/Fine's regenerative abilities. Remember what happened to Jonathan when he was given Kryptonian powers? The last thing Zod needs is for his new host body to suddenly develop a heart condition.

2. Why in the name of all that is holy did throwing the knife at Brainiac result in Zod being released? What's even stranger is that Clark seemed to know what he did. He says "What have I done?" after he's thrown the knife at Fine.

Well, there are two possibilities: Either 'Jor-El' really is the voice of Zod (something the producers have, to my understanding, repeatedly denied), or the knife itself wasn't meant to just kill Lex/Zod. My theory is that was supposed to connect Lex to the computer or whatever in the Fortress, and through the uplink Jor-El would have probably put Zod back in the Phantom Zone or some such.

By hitting Fine with the knife, Clark gave Brainiac a direct connection to the Fortress, which he then commandeered and made sure Zod was good and well released. But I could be wrong.

3. What was the point of gathering all of those biological viruses if Brainiac was going to create a computer virus?

It was to make the uber-vaccine to prepare Zod's new host body.

Oh, also...

>> So apparently Los Angeles and New York exist in the DC universe. I was under the impression that Gotham City was a replacement for New York City. That would have been cool. Label those images as "Gotham City," "Edge City," or other comic book places.

There's probably some regulation about relabeling stock footage like that, or else they would have used that for Metropolis.

Hey, Zod just got out of a long-@$$ prison sentence. I mean, Clark's dog would probably look good to him after all that time in the Phantom Zone.

>> Why is Zod even on the LuthorCorp roof? Lex made the promise to be there. Is this just a coincidence or is something of Lex still in there?

Something I forgot to address in my previous post... he probably has access to all of Lex's memories. Either that, or Zod realized "Wait, I've just arrived on Earth but I've dealt with the son of Jor-El without slipping in the 'Kneel before Zod' line the fans were hoping for. So now, to make up for it, I've gotta do this whole bad@$$ 'dramatically pose on the edge of the rooftop as the city burns beneath me' thing."

Let's face it, that was a pretty cool image.

I missed the last few minutes of this episode, what happened to Loinel and Chloe during the riot?

Last I saw, they were both dragged out of Lionel's limo by crazed Metropolitans, and each was at the bottom of a scrum. Speaking of which, I heard someone say something to the effect that civilization is five meals away from anarchy. Looks like it's about one meal in Metropolis.

was it me, or did it seem Clark gave up waaay too easy.?

By Chris Todaro on Friday, June 02, 2006 - 9:04 pm:

I was thinking it was part of some overall plan. He did seem to let himself be sucked into the phantom zone.

Crazy Theory:
Maybe it wasn't really Clark. If Fine can duplicate himself then maybe Jor-el has similar technology and can make a duplicate of Clark.
