Season Seven: First Impressions

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Smallville: The Kitchen Sink of Solitude: Season Seven: First Impressions

I'm really not impressed with this new season so far... after two episodes, here are some of my thoughts...

Note, spoilers abound.

...

...

...

Bizarro: Okay, now we're officially developing a formula of "Frightening new threat appears or is established in season finale, and will be summarily dealt with by the end of the following season premiere." Although the new wrinkle is the fact that apparently John took Bizarro away somewhere. Hopefully, this means that Bizarro will be more than just a single boss fight, although I'm wondering how they're going to bring him back later without making it seem tacked-on.

My theory: Bizarro cannot be casually destroyed, and John's stashed him someplace while they figure out a way to do it.

Kara: Yawn. Another smug Kryptonian who goes on about how Clark has been rendered weak and pathetic by his time among human beings. Y'know, Jor-El thought enough of human beings to let them raise Clark. He specifically chose the Kents for this purpose. The presence of multiple alien species in the Phantom Zone suggests that Jor-El probably could have chosen one of a number of planets for Clark to grow up, but he chose Earth for a specific reason. And even his disembodied voice carries nothing but contempt for the people of Earth. Maybe I'm just human-biased, but despite having come from what is supposedly an enlightened and advanced society, I don't think we've met a single Kryptonian, good or evil, that wasn't an elitist jackass.

I'm really hoping that Clark is keeping a tally in his head of every time Kara succeeds solely because of something a human is responsible for. Speaking of which, I did like the scene where he taught her how to use the super-hearing much like how his father helped teach him how to handle it.

Gabriel Grant: Now this guy actually offends my sensibilities as a fan of this show. By the end of the first appearance of him I wanted to turn the television off in disgust. He's supposed to represent a sudden change in how the Planet is run, therefore he's written to be arbitrarily overbearing and energetic. He goes out of his way to treat Chloe like total because she's had to actually work her way up the ladder in the world of journalism (heaven forbid), while just offering Lois a job outright over the story about the spaceship. If he's half as competent as he's presented to be (to the point of knowing the details of the careers of writers he apparently despises) he should know darn well that the reason she's let herself "burn out" is because of the way she's been treated because of her out there theories. But nope. Grant's decided that he needs to run the Planet like a tabloid so he chooses someone willing to write anything over someone who is talented enough to do so. And then he rubs it in Chloe's face that he's fast-tracking Lois.

And I'm willing to bet ten bucks that later on, Chloe's going to get sick of it and tell him off and he'll reveal he's been doing all this just to inspire Chloe to fight for every inch. <sarcasm>Because, y'know, that's never been done before.</sarcasm>

The bit about Lana's Clone: Wait, what? Let me get this straight... for some reason, Lex cloned Lana as part of his super-soldier program? Why? This makes about as much sense as the cyborg clone of Thor from Marvel Comics! And when was she actually able to get ahold of said clone? We're headed straight for Ocean's Twelve "the actual climax of the film happens in a flashback" territory, here. This was so far out of left field it's in the middle of a hockey rink.

Jimmy Olson: Am I the only one who thinks it weird that they've gone to the trouble of adding him to the opening sequence, yet he has yet to appear this season as of the end of the second episode?

Martha Kent, or the lack thereof: Judging by her absence from the opening sequence, it looks like we're going to be limited to cameo appearances throughout this season or something. I'll miss her, but I can understand why she won't be around as much, from a writing perspective... Clark's become a man, capable of taking care of himself, and there's only so much room for so many characters. Also, if I were the writers, I certainly wouldn't put Martha and Kara in the same house with the way Kara's being written. Kara's insufferable as it is without having to live in the same building with a normal human.

So far this new season is really rubbing me the wrong way. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be eagely awaiting 8:00 on Thursday nights unless something changes quickly.

I wasn't too happy with Jimmy Olson 007. It's a ridiculous concept.

I'm not happy with Chloe leaving the Planet and who takes her place, but that's a Season 8 thing now.
