Judy Blume

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Non-SciFi Novels: Kid (and Teen) Lit: Judy Blume

She's a legend when it comes to books for young people. She's written books for younger kids, and she's also written a few novels for adults.

But her most successful series of books were for teenagers. I have read almost all of them, and most of the were written back in the '70's. Also, many of Blume's books have been banned from various school libaries due to "questionable subject matter". I don't know about you, but if I heard about a book that was banned, I would want to read it even more!

In 1987, Blume released a compilation called "Letters To Judy: What Your Kids Wish They Could Tell You". Later she contributed to "Places I Never Meant To Be: Original Stories By Censored Writers". They were both pretty interesting.

My advice to those who want the full list of her books would be to look up her Wikipedia article. I have no idea if she's still writing at this point.

Good luck!

I remember reading her "Fudge" books when I was in Elementary School. I don't remember thinking of them as seeming at all controversial or racy for even my young age.

Of course I never did read "Are You There God? It's me Margret" which is one of her more controversial works, dealing with a young girl's first period, developing feelings for boys and dissatisfaction with how her body is developing. All of those topics seem pretty universal for most adolescent girls. That book is well known enough that comedian Chelsea Handler recently parodied it's title with her book "Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea."

Interesting side note. In the latest release (2003) they changed a character talking a bout liking Sesame Street & the Muppets to talking about Nickeloden & the Cartoon Network.

That would have been from "Double Fudge", Brian. I have it, and the others in that series. I do remember that part as well.

BTW, Blume has not written any other books since that one. Perhaps she has gone into semi-retirement.
