What ten books would you take with you?

Me:

1. The Bible (natch)
2. Universal Horrors (one of the best books period, this one tells the tale of the Universal Studios monster pictures of the '30s-'40s, in SO much detail it's obscene)
3. The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract
4. Advise and Consent by Allen Drury
5. On the Air by John Dunning (a big fat book about old time radio)
6. One of Uncle John's Bathroom Readers (probably the Tenth Anniversary one)
7. Matthew Henry's Bible Commentary
8. One of Will Durant's books
9. Some sort of movie reference book, probably the latest Leonard Maltin Guide
10. One of those big Alfred Hitchcock Short Story collections

If I was trapped on a dessert island alone? Forever?

1) The biggest pornography book I could find.

2) Any colection of the best chess games of the 20th century. (Heck, I got time. I'll make a set)

Frankly I wouldn't need anything else as what the books I know I already read. If you insist on 8 more books I'd probably take a history of the world, a boy scout hand book, survival guide for 1diots, The complete moron's giude to raft making and navagaiting, and the next largest Porno collections I could find.

By Allegra on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 8:46 pm:

1 a book of matches
2 "Goedel, Escher, and Bach"
3 a book of days
4 "The pillow book"
5 "Time Enough For Love" (Heinlein)
6 "Delta of Venus/Little Birds" (Nin)
7 something by Breece Pancake
8 I'm bored already.
9 time to jettison the books-
10 and pick up a guy who can hold an intelligent conversation and tell a good story. do they have those in stock at the bookstore?

By Craig `CR` Rohloff on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 12:39 pm:

Ooo, I could qualify for item #10 on Allegra's list, but please don't use most of my NitCentral posts to prove it! :O

By Blue Berry on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 - 2:53 pm:

CR,

I would've posted that, but I'm not sure I'd be the best for the job.:)

Allegra, are you a chick or a homosexual? Not that there is anything wrong with that, but if you are gay then I'm not your man. Nothing personal.

Besides telling a good story means me being relaxed enough with you to not stammer. If I think you are deciding my sponge worthiness a relaxed intelligent conversation would be out of the question.:)

On a desert island and making a raft; I'd rather not have the extra pressure.:O

By Scott McClenny on Saturday, May 03, 2003 - 2:25 pm:

Are we assuming that this desert island is uninhabited and there is no-one else around for
hundreds of miles and all we have for company is a volleyball?

In any case my list:

1)The Bible(Revised Standard Version,with Apocrypha)

2)The Republic by Plato

3)The Pilgrim's Progress by Bunyan

4)Til We Have Faces by C.S.Lewis

5)Infinite Crisis On Infinite Earths by DC Comics

6)The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle

7)The Collected Plays of Euripides

8)The Book Of Common Prayer

9)The Lives Of Dax

10)Dr.Who:The Companions or else that Captain Proton book, can't really decide WHICH.But if I'm gonna be stranded on a desert island with no human contact for the rest of my days it probably be the former,as I'd still like to remember what a girl looks like when I die!:)

By Todd Pence on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 - 5:16 pm:

>6)The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes by Conan >Doyle

Heck, why not just take The Annotated Sherlock Holmes edited by William S. Baring Gould?

By Blue Berry on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 3:01 am:

I'm surprised no one has posted:

1) raft making for Dummies
2) The idiots guide to navigating by the stars.

By ScottN on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 8:56 am:

Don't forget:

3) Deep sea fishing for Dummies

By kerriem on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 10:17 am:

By Blue Berry on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 7:37 pm:

5) The big book of pornography. (OK, maybe it is just me or maybe I'm the only one who'd admit it.:))
