I was surprised to learn that one of my favorite books, "I, Claudius : From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, Born 10 B.C., Murdered and Deified A.D. 54" was banned at one point. I searched for quite some time, but couldn't find when and why this happened. Does anyone happen to know?

This is a fantastic book that I strongly recommend. I first read this book at about 17 and tend to read it at least once a year. It is marvelously complex his, with believeable characters, and situations. It is a fictionalized account, but the vast majority of it is true.

I gotta laugh. Not at you Merat. It's just that I once was IMing on ICQ with the infamous Peter. He told me this was one of his favorite books. He even recommended it to me. I have a copy of it. I just haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

The Straight Dope has had an article on Caligula that mentions the book, I, Claudius. It even mentions some of the apparent inaccuracies in the novel. Here it is, if you're interested:

There is also a sequel to I,Claudius called
Claudius The God that is about Claudius' life from his coronation to his death by poison
mushroom.

Historians,it should be added, are divided as to how accurately the novels really depict the life
of Claudius and the man.

Genius or blathery fool?
