Lee Child

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Non-SciFi Novels: Mystery/Suspense: Lee Child

I finished Killing Floor earlier today. It's the first novel in Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" series. (The movie starring Tom Cruise that came out last year, Jack Reacher, was based on One Shot, the ninth novel in the series).

It was pretty good. It wasn't "non-stop action" as advertised, and in fact it moved kinda slow in spots, partially due to its focus on the investigative aspects of the plot, and partially because Child focuses a bit too much on irrelevant details in describing a locale, situation or Reacher's movements, so much so at times that it reminded me (negatively) of Dan Brown. I was also a bit disappointed in the way that it rarely seems as if Reacher is ever outmatched or in danger (something I never have to worry about with the novels of Peter David or Suzanne Collins). But all in all, it was good reading, with a plausible-sounding criminal plot, and use of technical details that at least had the appearance or feel of authenticity. I've already started the next novel in the series, Die Trying.
