The Dalotek Affair

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: UFO: Season One: The Dalotek Affair

A nearby Dalotek base seems to be the cause of disruption on Moonbase. But when the interference continues after the problem is seemingly dealt with, Moonbase is threatened with destruction by an out-of-control Dalotek vehicle...

Ummm.... You might want to recheck your stats on this episode. The runaway vehicle was in Responsibility Seat. The Dalotek Affair just has radar jamming. (And Paul falling in love, of course!)

I realize it was filmed at a different time when smoking wasn't frowned upon like it is now, but smoking on a moonbase like the female Dalotek astronaut did just blows my mind. First, it uses up oxygen that everyone needs to survive; second, to be an astronaut you have to be in exceptional health, and smoking won't benefit you there; and third, smokers have a constant craving for it, which means when they're in their spacesuits they're likely to be cranky and hyper until they get their fix.
I've watched a bunch of episodes on tape for the first time in a long time and I never remembered how much smoking Straker and Freeman did in every episode-- did the producers think they looked cool back then? Now it's just gross.

On Moonbase, why do the women have to wear purple wigs, but not the men?

By Kinggodzillak on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 1:51 pm:

It seems to be generally understood that the electrical equipment in the control room has adverse effects on the female brain, so the 'anti-static' wigs protect them.
Nothing like that was never said on TV, however....

I wonder if the BBC or Terry Nation got upset over Dalotek being so similar to Dalek?

Dr. Stranges' definition of UFO seems a long way from the actual definition: Unidentified Flying Object.

One of the Interceptors seemed to be wobbling. As if it were on a string rather than being propelled by rocket...

Referring to the approaching space rock as a meteorite was wrong. In space they are meteoroids or asteroids. They are only meteorites after landing.

Why did the alien ships have to approach the moon & alert the Moonbase to a possible plot rather than just launching the meteoroid toward the moon?

Not very bright of Moonbase personel to not consider the possibility that the meteorite might be responsible for the interference.

Okayyyyyyyyy, you are stuck on the moon so you only have one piece of vital equipment to run the geo-scanner. Yeah, sure, right....

The Dalotek people seem rather blase about this amnesia drug being used on them. I'd have been kicking & screaming about this fascist method.

How did the Dalotek people deal with the missing time?
"Gosh! One minute we're on the moon and the next it's several days/weeks/months later & I'm back on Earth. Oh, well. No big deal."

This amnesia drug sure seems like a good deal for Paul though. Get in a fight, break up, erase her memory, start all over again.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Saturday, July 21, 2007 - 8:43 pm:

Later episodes established that the amnesia drug only erased the past 12 hours, but this episode covers much more than 12 hours.

How far away is the Dalek, uh, DalOTEK base away from SHADO's moonbase? Paul makes a joke about a good restaurant just 200 miles away, when he was flirting with the Dalotek woman, but was he making a joke about a nonexistent restaurant, or was he referring to Moonbase, itself?
If so, then how could the Moon Mobile carry 200 MILES of cable for the phone connection between the two bases?
And if the bases aren't 200 miles apart, then they must be much closer, perhaps just a few minutes, which makes sense, because Paul visits them and states that he lost contact with Earth a half hour earlier, and he spent part of that time waiting for the Tech to fix the problem.
In that case, if Dalotek is just a couple miles away, then wouldn't they have noticed all that interceptor activity, and exploding UFO's in the sky?

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - 7:56 am:

After watching this again, I'll answer my own question and tell myself that I didn't think things through.

Moonbase and Dalotek are 50 miles apart, so the moon mobile carried 50 miles of cable to establish the land line communications.

Although they might see explosions in space, if they're pointing in the right direction, they might not even be on the Moon at the time of the attacks, because it was a temporary base. That said, just how much activity can YOU see, Mr. Steve McKinnon (you good-looking man, you), 50 miles from YOUR home??? How aware are you of planes coming and going that far from home, unless they're airborne, they fly over your home, and you look up??? Huhuhuh???
Not too many.

There's also the curvature of the Moon to take into account. 50 miles on Earth stretches out farther than 50 miles on the Moon because it's smaller and has an incline, according to real-life astronauts.

I suppose the Dalotek people are aware of Moonbases's basic military purposes, but Paul shows up on their base wearing a uniform with a SHADO emblem on it. Wouldn't you, as a Dalotek employee, wonder what 'SHADO' meant?

KAM - 'I wonder if the BBC or Terry Nation got upset over Dalotek being so similar to Dalek?'

Not only that, but someone named 'Blake' is also mentioned. The Daleks and Blake of 'Blake's 7' were both created by Terry Nation, but this was 8 years prior to the creation of 'Blake's 7'.

Straker has contact with the Head of Dalotek, as the one in charge of operations on his Moonbase. Hopefully, the CEO either is aware of SHADO's true involvement, or he might be wondering why a studio executive is talking to him about lunar bases.

Terry Nation's Solicitor on Line One :-)

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, April 25, 2022 - 8:22 pm:

It occurs to me that pilots in the interceptors are on a one-way trip, should the ship be damaged or lose power. The pilots are wearing (basically) a jet pilot helmet, and not a space helmet, let alone a space suit. The Lunar Module pilots, too, aren't wearing helmets. If there's an emergency, I don't believe the interceptors have an ejection seat.
I suppose Gerry Anderson partially corrected that with Eagle pilots in 'Space: 1999', but not every episode has them in spacesuits, either.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Sunday, May 01, 2022 - 6:15 am:

Guess so.

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Thursday, June 01, 2023 - 5:59 pm:

Straker and Freeman wonder why Dalotek is interested in the moon. Straker says it can't be mining as the moon has already been mined out.

Uh-hem... it would take centuries... decades at minimum... to "mine out" the moon. And after it is all done, the moon would not look pristine! Yet, all episodes where they venture out onto the surface show a relatively pristine surface. I realize these episodes were filmed the year of, or the year before, the Apollo 11 and 12 landings, but it had to be suspected that the moon would have tremendous mineral potential lying right on its surface. We know now that the soil contains oxygen.

So, that speculation by Straker and Freeman was not thought out well. I think a more intelligent set of reasons would be a discussion of whether it was financially feasible to develop minerals on the moon, how soon Dalotek might be ready to do so, and how it would impact on SHADO keeping a secret about aliens threatening Earth, and how soon several multinational mining companies would be moving in.

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Thursday, June 01, 2023 - 6:03 pm:

Oh, yes, how did Dalotek move in the outpost and the crew? We know they didn't "hitch a ride" with SHADO. SHADO had to be aware of the approach of some kind of spacecraft from Earth, and possibly even the launch from Earth. I would not be surprised if SHADO keeps tabs on every military and civilian launch facility on Earth so they know when a rocket goes up and can tell SID about it.
