Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: UFO: Season One: E.S.P

A man with ESP is slowly being taken over by the Aliens...
By Will on Thursday, September 26, 2002 - 10:13 am:

Another episode that seems to prove that the aliens have infiltrated human society more than is thought. They somehow discovered this man with his psychic gifts and utilized that to their advantage a year later, when they manipulated him into allowing his wife to die and bring Straker to the house.
Also intriguing how they 'spoke' through him, as he told them that 'we', meaning the aliens, needed Earth to survive, and asked why they were constantly attacked.

My enjoyment of this ep is somewhat lessened by the fact that ESP has been debunked by many scientists. It probably seemed more credible in the 60s. This surely wasn't a very sexy episode as it featured a frumpy middle-aged couple for guest stars. If this were an American show, I'm sure it would be a busty young woman with psychic powers. The show was Americanised somewhat as two late 60s American cars were used (a blue Camero and a green Pontiac, both with left-hand steering...isn't that tricky when driving in England?)

It seemed too much of a stretch that Croxley could draw up the entire blueprints and operations of SHADO from just briefly looking into Foster's mind.

The UFO crashing into the house was cool, but the running cat preceding it was laughably speeded up in fast motion. One detail I liked, was how the Mobile's window cracked when the UFO exploded. Scrapnel didn't seem to have penetrated into the cockpit, so it was understandable that Foster wasn't that seriously injured (but how did his copilot get killed?) It was also nice that a full scale set was built for the ruined front of the house.

One nit:
Straker is shot in the hand by Croxley (and bleeding), but when he later checks Croxley's body (after being shot by Foster), his hand appears fine; no blood.

Straker's handwatching technique (after eating in Foster's hospital room) leaves much to be desired; he just rinses his hands for 1 and a 1/2 seconds and doesn't dry his hands thoroughly.
... On the subject of germs, wouldn't the aliens bring dangerous alien pathogens with them (alien bacteria and viruses). Whenever an alien was examined, it should have been put in more of an isolation unit. No one ever appeared too worried about catching something from them.
Too bad UFO lasted only one season. If it had a second season, some very interesting storylines would have come about... maybe one involving alien attempts to introduce pathogenic agents to Earth.

If Straker wants to maintain his cover as a movie studio head he shouldn't be going out doing legwork as in this episode. Most people are likely to guess there's some connection between the Mr. Straker who came to talk to them about some UFO incident and the Straker who runs Harlington-Straker Studios given the uncommonness of the name. Unless of course someone snuck into Dr. Brunner's office later and gave him a dose of the SHADO amnesia drug.

The music after the commercial break just after the UFO crashes has a hint of the James Bond theme to it. I would assume this was a deliberate homage by Barry Gray.

For a house that got hit by a UFO, which then exploded, there sure is a lot of it left. And how did the cat avoid getting killed by the shrapnel or the force of the explosion?

The UFO crashed through a side of the house, leaving the rest intact, and then the UFO landed and exploded several yards behind the house...I originally disagreed with you about the lack of a completly destroyed house (because even in wartime bombings structures could still have some portions standing), but the UFO explosion should have finished the job.

Re. how Croxley's cat survived-- I'm sure cats and dogs somehow survived in war-time locations that were bombed. It may have run down the basement, and squeezed through an opening when the coast is clear.
What's interesting is the confrontation at the edn of the episode that shows the cat has survived takes place a month after the crash. I guess it's been eating leftovers or mice or birds because Croxley sure hasn't been coming back to feed the cat.

The interior of Foster's Mobile 2 seems odd, since he and the other SHADO operative are supposed to be in the front of the vehicle, driving it. And yet right beside the other guy is a padded wall, instead of the passenger-side window.

I counted the stamps that Croxley stuck on his package addressed to Straker-- it's about 60 stamps! And Straker's comment about someone wanting to make sure it arrived was also one of the few humourous quips uttered on the show.

Treklon - "It seemed too much of a stretch that Croxley could draw up the entire blueprints and operations of SHADO from just briefly looking into Foster's mind."
However, it wasn't just one isolated instant-- Paul told Straker and Freeman that somebody was watching him. Odd that Straker didn't take it seriously, as anybody tracking a SHADO operative should be reason for concern about the organization's security.

always with the cats...I knew there was a reason I don't like cats. :D

I liked that the UFOs explosion cracked the Mobile's windshield. Nice touch.

I've seen this episode several times down through the years, and even this time, back in May, I actually jerked back, surprised by the window getting hit-- totally forgot it happened.
