The Psychobombs

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: UFO: Season 2: The Psychobombs

The Aliens use 3 humans as walking bombs when Straker receives a demand for SHADO's surrender...
By Kinggodzillak Moderator on Saturday, August 03, 2002 - 5:57 pm:

The main Psychobombs theme comes from the Stingray episode 'The Ghost Ship'.

And how many times did they use that?
Too many! :)

By Paco on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 - 5:34 pm:

Is it supposed to be a joke that the red Porsche the female psychobomb is driving has a BMW 189 license plate?

By Chris Marks on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 3:37 am:

Having got the dvd box set and just sat and watched the episodes, it's really obvious that since ESP, virtually every episode has had someone being controlled by the aliens.

By Paco on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 1:03 pm:

It wasn't quite as ridiculous as a cat being controlled by the aliens in "The Cat With Ten Lives".

What's SHADO's policy on use of the cars? Foster uses Staker's car throughout this ep. In other eps, the guest stars use Foster's car. Perhaps, if another season would have been made, the producers might have considered contructing another 'futuristic' car. Straker's and Foster's cars were used by too many other people.

very true, Chris. In fact, while I was typing this response, I was being controlled by the aliens.

The timeline for the interaction between Paul and the woman doesn't seem right. They're acting like they've started dating and have spent time together numerous times, but it actually appears that they've been together for only a few hours. And yet they act pretty intimate for a couple that met only hours ago.

Policeman reports a license plate number & shortly thereafter he's dead & the police don't seem to investigate the car owner about this???

It's actually mentioned that they've spent 4 hours together. Off-hand I think she/the aliens were using her sex appeal to wrap Foster under her thumb to get him to take her into SHADO HQ. There's even a scene where he admits he doesn't know why he brought her there.

So why not stick this gal into that isolation booth of Dr. Jackson's that we saw in The Man Who Came Back?

I was oblivious to this for a long time, but the girl driving her car and then Straker's driving made me realize that both were driving cars on the left side of the compartment, instead of the right side that British cars are built as.
Was it common in Britain in the '70's to have both British rightside-driver seat cars and American leftside-driver seat cars on the road?

Or was this just something they did to have the series shown in the U.S., so as to not confuse American viewers?

It's either off line or has been scrapped for some reason.

The producers set the series in a version of Great Britain where everybody drove on the right hand side of the road, to match Europe and the USA.

So Skydiver 1 is damaged by a UFO in 'Sub-Smash', and considering the mixed-up rotation of episodes, may or may not be operating at this time. Skydiver 4 definitely is, as Sky 4 destroys the UFO as it tries to leave Earth. Skydiver 2 is out there, supposedly, but isn't mentioned.

SHADO has lost ALOT of vehicles in the series-- a pair of Interceptors, a Lunar Module, a couple Mobiles, and Skydiver 3. No wonder General Henderson is tight with the money! Good thing he didn't witness how many Eagles Moonbase Alpha lost, or else he would have lost his mind.

I think the alien-controlled woman was able to overcome her brainwashing at the last second, because instead of touching the wires together, to create a feedback and blow up SHADO HQ, she holds the two wires at each end and electrocutes herself. Reminds me of the man with ESP in 'ESP' who supposedly regained enough control over his mind to allow Foster to shoot and kill him, rather than continue to do the alien's bidding.

David Collings would play the first of the Psychobombs, Daniel Clark. A check of his dossier on imdb.com revealed a huge number of TV series credits spanning 1965 to 2015. But, most interesting are his three roles on 'Doctor Who'; all 4 episodes of 1975's 'Revenge of the Cybermen' as Vorus, all 4 episodes of 1977's 'Robots of Death' as Poul, and episodes 2, 3, and 4 of 1983's 'Mawdryn Undead' as...Mawdryn!

Tom Adams played the ill-fated Captain Lauritzen, and would also have a role in 'Doctor Who' in 1984's 'Warriors of the Deep' as Commander Vorshak.

The lovely Deborah Grant played Linda Simmonds, but never had a role in 'Doctor Who'. However, I'm happy to report that she's still with us at the age of 75.

Hey, Matthew, another for your list of places to see people who have appeared on Doctor Who.

Of course, when they did this episode of UFO, they had yet to appear on Who.

When Daniel Clark is first captured, why did they put him in a judo uniform?

By Geoff Capp (Gcapp) on Friday, June 02, 2023 - 6:36 pm:

I notice that they are almost always showing Straker's car being driven on country backroads that don't have a center line. It is as if they chose a road that they could cordon off for filming without impacting local traffic. That way, they can drive on the right.

As to Steve's comment about Gen. Henderson and loss of hardware. He'd probably be ready to run to the tax adviser on how to do an asset write-off when the moon takes off into interstellar space with the base, the hardware and 300 people. Of course, that might pale against the losses of life in the earthquakes and tsunamis, and let's not forget the lawsuits for stocking all that atomic waste in one tiny little area.

Could be.
